I finally have a reason to be miffed at this worldcup.

The news today say, if Germany loses against Argentina, the stocks will drop circa 1%. For the last week, the stocks finally, after weeks of dropping, started slowly climbing again. It´s still 400 points from where it was before the crash, but it´s looking good.

And now, because of this soccer business, real business is supposed to be afflicted? The article says, it´s a worldwide phenomenon: Whenever the national team loses a game, the stocks fall 0.88 % on average. Insane!

Keep your fucking footballs away from my money, you loons!

You know what pisses me off more than football, though? Capitalism.

The impact of footbal on macro issues is interesting, though, isn't it? There's a school of thought that says that the Wilson government was reelected as a result of the feelgood facotr that came from winning the World Cup in 1966, which is a very odd thought. I wonder if Big Brother has a comparable impact...

I really hate this irrationality. I don´t hate capitalism, but that these people put that much importance on guys kicking a piece of cowhide (or plastic?) makes me feel a bit nauseous about it.

I don´t hate capitalism

You see, this confuses me. Capitalism as she is run is responsible for astonishing acts of horror and debasement, and regularly causes horrible, horrible things to happen, usually to poor people. How is football more worthy of hatred than that? For that matter, how is being excited about football less rational than being excited about capitalism?

With capitalism, I made oodles of money in a matter of months. I´ll never make that amount of money with football.

And people will always be cruel to other people, be it in the name of god, gold, football or liberty.

It's bit offtopic, Mist, but might I ask what you invested in?

Mistoffelees
13:11 / 30.06.06
Sure, you can ask.

I have two stock fonds each at two different banks.

Three fonds are speculative and one is conservative.

Fidelity European Growth - investments in Europ. Union countries in lots of stuff (oil, banking, technology, services, etc.)

Nordea European Value Fund - 2/3 european stocks and 1/3 other stuff

Lingohr - 47% Europe, and other part of the world, 8.9% UK for example. Again, invested in all kind of industries or trades.

I´m too lazy to look up the conservative fonds, it´s boring and I´ve lost a bit of money (potentially of course, since I haven´t sold it yet) with it.

And nobody look down on me for having these investments please! I´m just doing it for "if I should need money a couple of years from now". I´m not rich or even wealthy you know (I can afford to play wow the whole day though, I admit).

And to keep on topic:
I can´t believe, I´m rooting for "my" team today, but "we" better win, or "our" economy/stocks might lose 5 billion euros (no joke!) by tomorrow evening.

and other part of the world, 8.9% UK for example

Oops, sorry! I didn´t mean for it to sound as if you guys aren´t European. I was just too lazy to type all the countries where that fonds is invested in.

I wonder if Big Brother has a comparable impact...

Only if it was International big brother with entrants qualifying by winning, or being highly placed, in their continental qualifying phases. It could go on for years!

I actually love the world cup and am even watching it right now (I know, I know I'm in the wrong place), although I do hate Wimbledon and televised tennis in general, does that count?

I hated Wimbledon when BBC2 used to do a decent line in science fiction on a Tuesday. Or perhaps even a bad line but I remember enjoying it a lot and then being very put out it having to stop for Wimbeldon. See also snooker.

Now I'm mostly ambivalent, although like most sports, now I know the rules its a lot more interesting

Wonder how Doctor Who affects the markets?

I could imagine at the very least the AIM going into freefall at the news Peter Kay was gonna be in it, but rallying somewhat when he actually turned out to be good.

I had this on in the background.

The minute it got to extra time, it was clear enough what was going to happen, the same thing as usual. And I can't really find it in my cold, black heart to gloat.

Next time round, I suppose the papers and TV could consider not putting such a huge burden of expectation on England's star player (see also Beckham, back whenever it was,) that he feels the need to lash out at the least opportune moment, but ... let's face it, it's not going to happen, is it?

Rooney might have got his petulance in check in four years time.

Oh wait, hold on... No chance

England going out on penalties is hardly surprizing - that it didn't have a negative impact on Doctor Who was a pleasent surprise...

did england lose tonight then?

that's a shame. I was getting to like all those st George flags... reminded me a bit of medieval times. you know, like a knight with his charge...

all they need is a jousting stick poking out the front window. maybe all the disappointed England fans could drive round Stuttgart, flags a-flappin, knocking German cyclists of their bikes with their jousting sticks...

or maybe not...

It sucks, that they lost. Now what am I going to do if Germany wins? I wanted to visit England this autumn. Hope I won´t come across any football "fans", that still have not started therapy then.

in seriousness, the territorial hatred seems to burn out within 24 hours... come over, mistophelees, we still love ya! also, at least we didn't lose to germany- that would have made it worse...
on behalf of England, I would formally like to apologise to you, and the great German nation, for our small minority of idiots...

Can I have my pub back now please?

Zizou Zidane played the match of his life, must put him as one of the top three or four players of all time. Christian Ronaldo will probably take a hike to Madrid, will defiantly not be welcome at Old Trafford even from the players i.e Roony

Walking the streets of London today, it really did feel as if an oppressive dictatorship had been overthrown by a band of plucky democratic rebels, and that freedom now reigned in England again.
