I've come back to Cannonball a couple of times - he was the first who came to mind - but might be just too young (still) to do what I think the character needs to do.

Which is to be an unhealthy after-school influence at some rec center.

Juggernaut might be better, but he keeps cropping up in high-profile roles.

Havok as Matthau

Y'know, Havok was the third name I kept returning to. He's got that essential, "Well, I kinda know the big guys, but they don't always return my calls," thing going on, and he's... dangerously unstable.

My problem is that I'm sure there's some minor character out there that I just don't know because all I do know are the characters everyone knows. (Or is knowing who Havok is showing a greater degree of geekiness?)

Oh, man, with Havok you could have a great scene with the equivalent of Kelly (the slightly older ringer, as played by Rorschach) sneaking into a bar and seeing the coach drinking with Wolverine, who then glides off into the night incognito.

"Was that?"

"No way, man."

"It sure looked like...."

"But with coach? Naaaah."

Maybe.

That works though.

Heh. Meltdown.

Exactly.

And the kids would be

a. Young.

b. Living with their parents (who don't *get* them), for the most part.

c. In regular schools (or else truants).

d. Really not powerful at all, and not disciplined at all, in any sense of the word. Outsiders and misfits, yes, but also losers. The kind most people don't look at twice.

Mimic!
Villain turned hero, arrogant, great powers but everyone forgets him. I can see him with a beard and tatty, stained wings, taking on all the kids powers but too surly to use them...

I think I'd like the idea of Mimic more if he hadn't gotten so much exposure in eXiles. What about Thomas "Alchemy" Jones, one of those young mutants that X-Factor came across back in the day? He's suitably obscure, is unaffiliated, and I could see him starting a more grass roots mutant X-team.

Who would you team up as the kids? Blindfold has a nice visual attached to her, she's very distinctive, which I think works -- although Pacquette shouldn't be allowed to draw her, as he seems to turn her into some kind of twenty-something superbabe.

And I like Hisako, partly because of the Runaways mention of her as leader of the future X-Men.

I was hoping to save Alchemy for All-Star Excalibur.

"My All-Star Challenge sense is tingling!"

Let's see... we have two puzzlers here. One is to find a Matthau for "Bad News Mutants", and the other is the initial question (about training a new team of mutants).

For the first:

What about Iceman? One of the originals, but never really taken seriously. He doesn't have Beast's brains, Angel's money, Jean's raw power, or Cyke's ability to attract female telepaths....

For the second:

I always liked the idea of "X-Corporation", even if the application went nowhere. Imagine a division of speedsters and telepaths that are hired out as secure couriers, or telepathic secretaries (regular ones already know what their boss is thinking. )
