Oh yes, almost certainly, but does that mean they actually ARE an item when we can't see them?

If you knew how many times I've used this line of reasoning in my own personal life....

"Going to posit the opinion that the network probably vetoed it."

Nope.

MattShepherd: I WEDDED KALI!
16:25 / 22.11.06
Care to... uh... expound on that at all?

A fall of geckos
16:36 / 22.11.06
I heard that Davis had the edit made, because he thought it was subtler not to make the relationship explicit via a cheapish joke at the end of the episode.

Kali, Queen of Kitteh
17:16 / 22.11.06
Whatever the case, no one should be surprised that Rickey and Jake's relationship didn't make it onto the final cut.

Our Lady Has Left the Building
18:31 / 23.11.06
I do rather think that, without the joke, it's not clear that they have a relationship at all, seeing as they drive around in a van with a woman some twenty years older than them.

ONLY NICE THINGS
18:57 / 23.11.06
The relationship is pretty clear, I thought.

No need to complicate a children's show by showing evidence of a homosexual relationship now is there?*

Captain Jack grabbing Algie's bottom at the start of the Empty Child, and then the Doctor taking time out later to explain to Rose at length that no, that wasn't just two heterosexuals horsing around, but that Jack and Algie were doing it, doing it, doing it. See also Captain Jack snogging the Doctor, and for that matter Captain Jack flirting with the TV chap in the penultimate episode. I think the BBC and RTD have both made it reasonably clear that it's OK to have the gay mentioned in Doctor Who.

18:59 / 23.11.06
Oh, also - bear in mind that the BBC is both the producer and the network here - the Beeb commissioned Doctor Who, it cast it, BBC facilities were used to film it and it's broadcast on BBC television channels. It's a different setup, and one which might not be intuitive to American eyes.

Our Lady Has Left the Building
20:59 / 23.11.06
Haus, what is there on-screen that makes it clear that Rickey and BGL were a couple?

ONLY NICE THINGS
05:58 / 24.11.06
Well, the reaction to Mickey revealing that Ricky had died, I thought, was quite clear, and his reaction to Mickey offering to help him attack the transmitter in the Zepellin. If not text then strong subtext...

Whisky Priestess
07:41 / 24.11.06
Could have been an unrequited gay crush or an unacknowledged homosexual attraction though. They may not have actually been in a relationship so much as been "best buddies" in that not-at-all-repressed, not-at-all-gay way so rife within military and paramilitary organisations.

ONLY NICE THINGS
14:41 / 24.11.06
Fair points all. So, I would have been better advised to say that there seemed to be a powerful bond o' love between little blondey and London's most wanted, which may or may not have been a) sexual or b) consummated. Sound about right?

However, I'd still suggest that it's unlikely that the scene was removed due to pressure from the networks, since the BBC commissioned and made the series as well, and since the series had already delved into the gay.

"Whatever the case, no one should be surprised that Rickey and Jake's relationship didn't make it onto the final cut."

Except for people who'd seen the first series, obviously.

RTD told the Dr Who magazine that he asked for the edit because it didn't add to the story in any meaningful way and came across as a cheap gimmick because of "our" Mickey. The BBC has never made any moves to tone down queer content in the series.

Kali, Queen of Kitteh
17:15 / 24.11.06
I'll be honest; I'd forgotten about the queer content of the first series. No need to go on at me.

some guy
17:19 / 24.11.06
Sorry about that, Kali. Didn't mean to snipe at you specifically.

Our Lady Has Left the Building
05:49 / 06.12.06
David Tennant favouritist Doctor ever!. Billy Piper favouritist companion ever! Who says the quality of BBC journalism is going down?

I've had the boxed-set of season 2 for about a week now and it's a nice little package, isn't it? If you're watching the season for the first time on DVD, there are spoilers splashed all over the packaging, which is a bit of a shame, I suppose.

Anybody find any easter eggs yet?

Transmission of Crimbo Special is confirmed at 7pm, Christmas Day. Torchwood finale (eps 12 and 13) is New Year's Day 9:30pm. That is all.

10:31 / 06.12.06
I think, like the last set, it's okay but could be better. In comparison to the original series D.V.D.s they're lacking. Still, the box is nicer this time around.

And David and Billie winning the DWm poll? No surprise. The incumbent usually gets the nod and the readership has rocketed since the show came back on the air and I suspect only a small proportion of the newbies will have even seen a Hartnell episode.

In addition to the Torchwood finalé on New Year's Day, the first episode of The Sarah Jane Adventures is on BBC 1 at 4:50pm. It's called "Invasion of the Bane" and here's a promo pic:

I know it's blatantly being marketed as CBBC fare, but then, some of RTD's earlier works for children's television have been quite good. I'll be watching anyway..

Triplets
16:05 / 06.12.06
What do you think, Kali? That lad's jacket is quite nice.

Our Lady Has Left the Building
18:09 / 06.12.06
Not so keen on the orange tights myself.

sleazenation
18:28 / 06.12.06
Yeah - the orange tights seem a bit of a warning sign... Compare and contrast - Dark Season/Century Falls Vs Sarah Jane and friends... having said which I recently saw the titles from 80s Sarah Jane/Dr Who spin-off K9 and Company were pretty terrible...

Kali, Queen of Kitteh
14:36 / 07.12.06
Well, Triplets, the lad in the jacket does bear some passing resemblance to my favourite jailbait, Daniel Radcliffe, so I'll say....

Sure, why not?

Our Lady Has Left the Building
16:46 / 07.12.06
I'm just wondering "why Sarah-Jane?" Was there a mass emailing to the DW offices in Cardiff after that episode from young kids asking for more of Sarah-Jane and her tin dog?

Lama glama
17:13 / 07.12.06
Well, the people mass e-mailing for the tin dog will be disappointed. He's only appearing in the pilot episode, and none of the subsequent ten episodes.

Elijah, Freelance Rabbi
18:18 / 07.12.06
Will it be like Poochie and K9 will head off in his spaceship after the pilot?

Chew On Fat

I guess this sort of belongs in the 2nd season thread, but some of you might be interested in the Dr Who CD given away free with this weeks Radio Times. Its the first half of a story called the Feast of the Dead' set in (modern-day?) London amongst Rose's friends.

Its of interest perhaps because its entirely performed by that irrepressible scot David Tennant. He uses his normal scottish accent for the narrative bits and then slips sideways into more demographically-soothing English for the Doctor's exclamations.

His Scottish accent is great but is a bit distracting at first. His take on Mickey's south london accent falls somewhere on a spectrum containing 'Not bad' 'game' and 'insulting' depending on your point of view. Also a few of the secondary characters happen to have a Scots background. And why not? He admits in the short notes that Rose was impossible for him to impersonate.

I thought it was pretty good. The story is rather complex and gets quite exposition heavy in places.

For £2 I thought it was pretty good value considerring you get the wonderful Xmas edition of RT thrown in and getting that used to be a huge part of the build up to Christmas in the house of Fat. Then you'll have to get the 2nd half with the next issue of RT. You'd get the lot on Amazon with the plastic CD case for 6.99 so its still just about worth it if you want some pre-Bride Tennanty goodness and it just about falls into the 'cannon' as you've got an actual Doctor on board.

When's the Xmas special?

Chew On Fat
14:11 / 14.12.06
The xmas special of Dr Who 'The runaway bride' is on 7pm on Xmas Day BBC1

Whisky Priestess
14:12 / 14.12.06
Christmas Day. 7pm I think.

Our Lady Has Left the Building
18:42 / 14.12.06
Chew on Fat, it's Feast of the Drowned and is indeed fun.

Feverfew
19:19 / 19.12.06
Can I just note that if I hear one more person / tv interview / radio spot come out with the line "Katharine Tate in this year's Dr Who Special: Is She Bovvered?" then I may have to kill. Seriously.

Kali, Queen of Kitteh
19:21 / 19.12.06
I can see how you would be.

Bovvered, I mean.

I'll get me coat...
