before this all fades into the dim and distant past, an interesting wee tidbit.

seems mr. morrison's interest in bruce wayne's obscure male relatives runs deeper than you might think. take a butcher's at the top item here; i for one had no idea that batman had a brother...

You missed the bit where Batman returns to the cave, pulls down his trousers and pants, mumbles 'why ... why did I let her get away ...' and then engages in a bout of angry, tearful self-abuse with regard to the computer-generated image of the mother of his son.

BATMAN #665

The "Three Ghosts of Batman" continues as Batman tries to discover the mysterious contents of Casebook X! This issue takes us back to Batman's early days and reveals the truth about his final confrontation with Joe Chill, the man who murdered his parents. It also ties in to 52, as we learn what really happened to Batman inside the cave in Nanda Parbat when he underwent a seven-day Buddhist isolation ritual to purge his negative karma.
On sale April 25 o 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US

there's the cover with what appears to be Bats carving [or painting] the insignia with blood in his chest. #666 will be very interesting...

My first thought on the cover is that he's cutting the symbol out of himself, not painting it in. Interesting, indeed.

It looks more like he's cutting around the Bat-symbol/chest rather than cutting it out directly. Weird. Anyway, the title:

THE THREE GHOSTS OF BATMAN!

I heart Grizzle Morizzle.

SPOILERS from that interview

“Issue #666 [in the summer],” he laughs, “is Damian grown up as Batman of the future fighting the Anti-Christ.”

Ha! Yes, I will continue buying you, Batman.

Slightly off topic, has anyone being buying Dini's new Batman? That interview made it sounds pretty good, but I remember being unimpressed at the issue I flicked through at the store.

I've been picking up Dini's detective. Over all I enjoy it. Particularly as single issue stories I can pick them up or not on a whim. There's some interesting things being done, Riddler's become a Detective for hire, Pinguin's gone "Legit" finding better profits in branding and merchendizing his name etc... the art is hit and miss though so I'd judge each issue on a quick flip through.

Yeah, the art is really mediocre on Detective. This is especially disappointing after JHW3's awesome work kicked off Dini's run. There was a great story recently though where the Joker kidnaps Robin and takes him for a joyride. All tied up, he can do nothing but watch as Joker runs people over, laughing all the way. And as for GM's book - Damien vs. the Anti-Christ in issue #666? Can't wait for that one!

I thought that Joker ish was alright, but if I'm honest I wish people (with the exception of Grant, obvs) would leave the character alone. He's completely overexposed and as a consequence of which has lost a lot of power. I'm with Morrigun on thinking that the character needs to get properly scary again, and I can't see that happening when he's left in the hands of mediocre writers, and makes appearances in god awful comics like The Creeper.

The guy's supposed to be Batman's arch enemy, fercryeye. He's supposed to be at the top of the tree, instead he have Robin - Batman's sidekick - handing him his arse.

I say nay.

I've found Dini's run to be enjoyable but nothing spectacular. Somehow, Dini's best writing seems to occur in the animated TV work he does...his comics never seem to quite have the pizzazz or brilliance that his TV writing does, in my experience.

What did you mean about 'population explosion,' by the way?

Just something off the top of my head... If this version of Batman is going to be more mentally sane, shouldn't he move from Wayne Manor? I mean, it's like Bruce is still living with the ghosts of his parents; he has stated in various occasions that the Manor hasn't changed much since their death...

Thanks for the kind words about the recap, altrough that's not my "real" drawing style, it was done in a purposely crappy and quickly drawn manner, which was the idea of the contest.

Well, I think Grant's run is also cheerfully wallowing in the bat mythology and if you're gonna do that I think you've gotta stay in Wayne Manor. Saying that, though, I seem to remember Brucey boy hanging out a plush penthouse sometime in the early 80s/late 70s.

It'll be interesting to see. I could imagine Grant taking Batman back to penthouse living.

Englehart's run, I think. Silver StCloud(?), the Penthouse, and all sorts of post-Disco shininess.

The penthouse was used very recently actually, in the risible Grotesk storyline. Bruce takes the doctor-in-distress there to wrench some exposition out of her.

But I think, yeah, the penthouse would be a good fit for a more grounded billionaire Brucie. As long as it's exactly like it was in the 70s, with all that lovely stonework and wood paneling.

I'm really looking forward to the rest of this arc though. I've a feeling from that interview that it could be aboout to go a bit... cosmic. Wasn't the name of the 5th dimensional (??) Batman scrawled on the wall on the first page of the first issue? Take that with Grant's mentioning all the crazy intergalactic Batman stuff from the 50s and it looks like Bats will be coming out of that sci-fi closet sometime in the next year. And didn't he mention something about Batmite recently?

Spaniel
18:10 / 24.01.07
Ya see, I don't expect it to get too cosmic. It doesn't feel like that kind of comic, and anyway Grant's been there and done that in the JLA.

That's not to say I don't expect to see cosmic elements, I just expect the flavour to be a little different. This is a more grounded Batman than the Batman of the JLA, I reckon. A Batman that can suffer and feel pain and can be beaten (if temporarily). I mean, we've already had a small dose of angst, and Batman taken captive. I'm thinking things are gonna get harder from here on in.

TBH, another dose of the sci-fi cabinet would bore the pants off me.

Incidentally (and somewhat threadrottish), does anyone else think that George Perez's cover for Brave & Bold no.1 is one of the most exquisitely 80's thingver seen?

Now that's a Batman who kicks it in a Penthouse.

Mr Tricks
18:55 / 24.01.07
Apparently THAT Batman will get a bit cosmic what with an interplantary murder case and all.

There's cosmic and there's cosmic. I don't think it'll be Rock of Ages cosmic, fer example.

It makes me happy.

Mmm. Reminds me of the beginning to L.A Law. Is there any question that Perez is the quintessential 80's superhero artist?
I'm quite jazzed about this title. Team up books = good. Waid and Perez = (mostly) good. 80's cityscapes = good.

Is it self contained stories? if so then = good.

Actually, John , I was wondering who or what Zen Arrh Nur [sp?] was. Thought it might be some riff on a Ras Al Ghul type name and therefore could apply to Damian, but it's Bat-mite's name, is it? Fucking great. As I've said before, it's very important that Bat-mite's in this comic.

I'm 97% sure that's what the reference is too, yeah. It may well have been some fever'd cheese-dream, but I'm sure I read about the name belonging to an otherworldly Batman when the first issue came out, and I also think I may have read an interview where GMoz mentions he's found a way to not only use the Batmite, but make the character, as a concept, 'work'.

I too really hope it's real and not just one of those things that I've imagined and then incorporated into my own personal knowledge-base. I did that once when I was a kid, and I was convinced I flew downstairs. To this day I'm not sure if it was true, but I can still remember doing it now, some 18 years later.

If the internet at work wasn' crippled by WebMarshall, I would get googling for you, but I'm afraid the relevant sites are blocked on my work PC - reason: pornography (if only...).

Guys we talked about that pages back.

To quote Cameron

>>>Repeating grafitti on the last page "Zur en arrr". "Surrender"?<<<

Batman 113 - Feb. 1958

"The Superman of Planet X"

Batman is transported to an alien planet, Zur-En-Arrh, by the Batman of that world. On the new planet, Batman acquires superpowers similar to Superman. He has been brought to Zur-En-Arrh to defeat some alien invaders. While he is initially successful, the aliens are able to turn themselves invisible making it difficult for Batman to fight them. His counterpart is able to use the Bat-Radia to disrupt the invisibility screen, so that Batman can drive off the aliens. Batman returns home with the Bat-Radia as a souvenir.
