Whisky:
From this CofE page, it seems like the Church changed its stance a few decades ago, although there's nothing specifically about burial there. This Time article from 1962 is more explicit:

Some suicides are not sinful, and even those that are should receive a Christian burial, says a report approved last week by the Anglican House of Bishops.

The bishops still deplored suicide as "the easy way out" in the face of impending exposure for some disgraceful act. But they ruled that persons suffering incurable diseases, or faced by rape or torture, can not be condemned if they kill themselves. Moreover, "we see no reason why the body of a suicide should not be brought into the church for a service, nor do we see any reason why it should not be buried in consecrated ground."

The report—expected to be approved by the church assembly and Parliament within a year—recommends that an alternative burial service be read over all suicides, to avoid subjective judgment on whether or not they were sinful. Two key phrases would be left out of the suicide burial service.

I don't know what you're thinking of doing, Whisky. But I don't like it. I don't care what the church says!!

My parents' car has an ipod conector in it that plugs straight into the bottom of the ipod at the proprietary data point.

I don't have an ipod, but have an mp3 player that has the usual headphone socket.

I want to use my mp3 player in said parents' car.

Does anybody manufacture a connector that has the female end of the ipod data connection, and the male end of a usual headphone jack?

Anyone know any books on the science of Alchemy? I'm talking about the medieval period stuff, homunculi and all, rather than the new age version of it.

The Splendor Solis is a famous book on alchemy.

You can get it for a couple of pounds here, for example.

I'd be really surprised. What you want, I think, is a USB cable.

How does your mp3 player get the mp3s on it?

Anyone got tips for non-lethal mouse repellents? I live on the first floor with a garden and many cracks and holes in our floors - the little devils get in and snack on crumbs and stuff, leaving their little droppings where they ought not to be.

Cheers!

All I can suggest is using the ramp over a bucket method, putting some peanute butter or something just beyond and let them fall in, then disperse outside in the morning. Not as effective or hands-off as you probably want.

Now, my burning question: There is some sort of mythological Adun, right? The internets are giving me nothing and while it's not particularly life or death, I'd like to know who or what this Adun was, even though I suspect the answer may make me feel like an idiot.

What's the context? I'm suspecting it's a variant spelling for something else.

According to my utterly useless notes to myself, it may have something to do with apples, horses and Phaedra. At least, it's grouped with those things.

Adon, perhaps, which is a Semitic word for "lord" - see Adonai, most obviously, or Adonis, which is a Graicised form of Tammuz.

Phaedra's got nothing to do with apples, AFAIK... It wouldn't be Idun, would it? Keeper of the apples of eternal youth in Norse mythology?

Dumb question; What's the difference between "Graicized" and "Hellenized"? Is it that the former is linguistic, while the latter is cultural?

Thanks, Haus, I think it's sorted now. "Inanna" and "Ishtar" being on the next line, I suspect it's Tammuz/Adonis and either a variant spelling or my error (I still have no idea what these were notes for, if anything). I didn't even think of Adonis, because I was so wrapped up in discounting Adonai.

Phaedra and horses. Adun and Inanna.

Apples? Who knows.

And Jack nails the apples, I think. Bad punning or maybe I was prodding myself towards something.

I think I only hold onto old notes and scribblings to torture myself years later.

Thanks, both of you.

Bit of a technical question here, but I'll see if anyone knows.

I recorded today's episode of Doctor Who onto DVD for my brother to watch later in the week. I thought it worked fine, but when I went to watch the recorded episode my DVD recorder/player said it was blank. So did the computer. Thing is, I can see the darker area of the disc where the data has been burned onto it. So, does anybody know why that might have happened and on the off chance there's a way at getting to watch it (which there probably isn't)?

Thanks.

Not in Ireland, unfortunately. I cleaned the DVD player and am gonna try it again tonight. My brother doesn't have digital TV (which is the only way we can get Who here) so I've been recording it for him this season.

Hopefully it'll record tonight.

so my cell phone has become 90% nonfunctional in the last week.

everyone is telling me that it's standard practice to get a free phone just because I've been with the same company for 4 years without a new phone. or else that I can get a new phone for about $30 if I go around and find the right place.

however according to the conversation I just had at the AT&T store, my having been with them for 4 years entitles me to getting a new phone for $120 rather than $150 (this is their cheapest phone), IF I sign up for a 2 year contract.

"I'm planning on leaving the country in about a year. how does that work?"
"well, basically that means you break your contract and pay another $150."
"you're not really selling this phone very well."

am I missing something? is there somebody else I need to talk to in order to get the fabled free/$30 phone with service?

please keep in mind

a) I don't want to wait on hold for 45 minutes and then argue with some fuckhead over the phone. I also don't want to try to navigate some shitty fucking automated menu which has no option that matches what I want and then hangs up on me. in fact I don't want to call anyone. my phone doesn't work.

b) I need a new phone soon. trying to find someone this weekend for our date was a nightmare thanks to her changing the plans at the last minute. I ended up beating the phone on a wall to get it to find a signal, after spending about an hour exhausting myself hiking around trying to figure out where she was. the good news is that beating it on a wall seems to work, but I'm not sure for how long.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

I priced phone service out when my old one started experiencing quick-onset aphasia and seizures, and I really can't recommend physically going to different phone stores around town and talking to sales people directly highly enough. I stuck with my pre-existing service provider out of convenience, and had to fight a bit to get a reasonably discounted phone, but it was worth it.

Transferrable numbers are becoming bigger now, so it might be easier to switch providers... but the contract thing is annoying. If you aren't on a 2-year contract already, I'd say duck out while you still can.

You can most certainly bargain with someone, and/or shop around. I think that AT&T and T-Mobile are on GSM networks, so the phones can be used outside the states, which may be relevant if you're leaving the country. If it doesn't matter, and you live in an urban area, they are mostly the same, (well, except Sprint service blows, and AT&T is only slightly better). I don't know if it's still the same but there may be a delay in porting your number over to another provider, which could cramp your style.
Consumer Reports has a link to this service for comparing plans, which may be worth checking. But if you only need a phone and not a new plan, and can wait a few days, you would probably get the best deal shopping for it online, just make sure it's compatible.

Which is better, DSL or cable internet?

My Mom Thinks I'm Cool
12:30 / 29.04.08
I think dsl and cable are supposed to be about the same...but I have to say that my current connection (cable) is totally kicking ass compared to my last connection (dsl).

there's probably other factors involved - like what neighborhood you're in, what you're doing with it, etc. also some wireless cards/routers will limit the bandwidth you can get through them and be the bottleneck, so it won't matter what your service is.

it might be worth checking just to see which companies are having a promotional offer, and going with that.
