Thanks for the suggestions. The Pride rally is going on a few block from where I'm staying, and it seems like I'm bound to come across some celebrations. I love this city, even when it's hot and stinky like today. We're going bike riding in Central Park this afternoon. I kind of want to see the waterfalls, though they look a little weak in photos.
Happy birthday MMTIC; coincidentally, part of the reason I came here was to surprise my brother for his birthday.

Here in the UK the situation in Zimbabwe seems to get an awful lot of press (I'm not saying that's wrong, but compared with, say, Darfur the coverage/outrage seems to be higher). Is it a big deal elsewhere in the world or is this a UK only deal. If so do people reckon this is due to the status of Zimbabwe as an ex-colony?

It's been on NPR quite a bit, and the front page of the NY Times, but I'm not sure about things like CNN or MSNBC.

What's treasury stock good for? Good income return, or safer than shares, or capital growth, or not much different from sticking your money in a normal bank account...?

Sorry, Doozy, I have no idea.

Does anyone know where I can buy rice and pasta in bulk in the UK? V.large bags, around 25kg. We have Infinity Foods down the road, but I'm thinking there must be somewhere cheaper.

Some - more or less all? - Chinese supermarkets do massive bags of rice. I'm not sure about pasta, though.

Well, if they're like the oriental groceries here, they'll have wheat noodles, which are basically the same thing as spaghetti.

Nifeislife do bulk orders for Italian food, although I don't know how the costs stack up against Infinity Foods.

Tesco do big bags of rice.

Is there any way around URL filtering? Well, I realise there must be, but can any of you lovely people tell me a way of disabling it so I can get at my emails?

Thanks!

jub, if your company doesn't have the patience to filter them all, a proxy website might help you get at what you need. i'd try youhide.com, but there are plenty of others if that one's blocked. google can provide lots.

it's down. info.

refuge can be sought at 7 & 711, although they seem to be a bit ban-happy with refugees that aren't behaving.

Elevenses? Tea time? Do you Brits really have these things?

If you're not from North America and have more than 3 official daily meals on a regular basis, i'd like to hear about it.

Evil Scientist

I think elevenses has metamorphed into the mid-morning tea break these days, but I think it used to be a brunch style affair. Tea time was a sort of pre-dinner dinner with tea and a few little nibbles.

These days most people have the three meals a day.

But tea break is holy.

If you mean tea-time in kind of a high tea kind of way with silver platters, sponge cakes and cucumber sandwiches with the crusts cut off, then no. If you mean a cup of tea or coffee, perhaps a biscuit or two, then kind of. In offices most people will have a hot drink, often around those times but generally work will not stop. If you're working in a more blue collar environment you often have official tea-breaks (normally one in the morning and one in the afternoon) which often take place in a break room as having food and drink on the shopfloor is less feasible.

I'm reminded of the commentary on the Aliens dvd where several of the American actors and Jim Cameron himself were mystified and a little infuriated by the, mostly-British, camera crew's habit of dropping everything mid-shoot for their tea breaks.

Tea breaks are great...I'm on one now. I have jammy dodgers.

I hear there's a new procedure for treating that which doesn't involve padded specialty undrgarments.

It'd be no fun without the padding.

It's down again. As such a refugee I have warmed to iichan, which although running at approximately 1/10 the pace of 4chan's /a/nime board, seems a good deal more civilised. They even upbraid people on routine use of homophobic slang! Unreal!

Is there a thread here on eighties music?

jamesPD

80's (New Wave) Party is the closest thing I could find. Which, frankly, isn't really very close to be honest.

Tsuga
22:28 / 25.07.08
I know that a thread of music from a decade is a broad (and somewhat arbitrary) topic, but I figure honestly, how many people here would even care to get into it? Narrow it down and there's no discussion at all.
Possibly keep it broad and there's no discussion at all.

So, I just came into a box of comics - mostly Dell titles like Looney Tunes and Rin Tin Tin from around 1954. None are in outstanding condition, but they're all readable and most have intact covers.

Are they mulch, or should I take 'em somewhere? And where?

So back to Tea Breaks and Elevenses, here in Spain they have breakfast (normal time), almuerzo (coffee & cake, 11am ish), lunch (anywhere from 1pm to 4.30pm), merienda (sandwich, & beer or coffee 6pm ish) and dinner (anywhere from 9.30 to 11.30pm+). Excellent. I'm just starting my dinner now and it is 10.30pm after a hard day at the beach.

I could have these names mixed up a bit and I think they swap them around a bit in different regions of the country, but you get the rough idea.

Anywhere a big ol' geek like me can get a copy of the version of All Along The Watchtower as played in Season 3 of Battlestar Galactica?
