I think the exact words were "God DAMN America!" in the middle of a sermon.

I haven't watched the video here but I get the gist from the headlines.

ID, I didn't see Jeremiah Wright's speech either, but Barack's response mentioned that that the 9/11 attacks were utterly inexcusable. I believe that Wright claimed 9/11 may have been somewhat influenced by US foreign policy, which is, you know, frankly ludicrous.

ONLY NICE THINGS

Essentially:

1) That America's foreign policy had planted the seeds of 9/11.
2) That America should be damned for its failure to treat its citizens equally regardless of race.

With a 3-year gap between (1) and (2), and another between (2) and (3).

(3) being the present day, sorry.

Ah... from the Wikipedia entry:

ABC News publicized several controversial sound bites of Wright's sermons which were heavily critical of the United States Government inluding: saying of the events of September 11, 2001: "The stuff we have done overseas is brought right back into our homes". In other sermons, he said "The government lied about inventing the HIV virus as a means of genocide against people of color", referring to AIDS origins theories, and "The government gives them the drugs [referring to the Iran-Contra Affair], builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing 'God Bless America.' No, no, no, God damn America, that's in the Bible for killing innocent people...God damn America for treating our citizens as less than human. God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme."

You mean the same thing I say fairly casually, minus the G-d language and the AIDS conspiracy theorizing? Golly gee. I guess it's a good thing I'm not a minister.

You heard Obama's response? One of his points is that lots of ministers say similar things.

Syntactic expletives, by the way.
It was in Wikipedia, of all places, that I found what the "false subject" of this construction is called.

I did read it, see here.

Syntactic expletives. Jawsome.

Did you see that YouTube thing I put in the YouTube thread with the Chinese ballet acrobats in Monaco??

Not that specific video, but have seen quite a bit of Chinese acrobalance on pointe. Apparently it makes the base's shoulder black. Oh, our video is here by the by- not very similar to that though...

my 5-yr-old was hypnotized by that! Of course, then she started saying "I can do that! I can do that!"

Maybe with a *lot* of practice.

Cool!

2) That America should be damned for its failure to treat its citizens equally regardless of race.

I could be mistaken, but I believe he meant that America would be, rather than should be, damned -- my understanding is that in his opinion the bible lays out guidelines, and failure to follow those guidelines leads to damnation. He says that America has failed to follow them, so far from having blessing to look forward to, it can instead expect damnation.

Can anyone recommend me a male or unisex hairdress shop somewhere in south London? Preferably close to East Dulwich, or Peckham/Brixton. I used to visit a local barbers shop, but I'm trying to grow my hair a bit, so I need somewhere that offers more than just clippers.

(I could have sworn that there was a thread specifically for asking for this, but my searches for 'hair cut', 'hair dresser', and 'hairdressing' aren't turning up anything useful, just a topic on cutting ones own hair.)

Thanks man. Google was uncharacteristically rubbish at finding the thread, but our own broken search function seems to find it first time. The world has gone mad.

Just so I don't get all over-excited and fire out a thread that no-one wants...anyone else interested if I start a "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" thread in Film/TV?

Or am I the only one all agitated by the combination of cyborgs, time travel, and Summer Glau?

Since most problems in the Sarah Connor Chronicles have been resolved by chopping someone's arm off, I am absolutely there.

What does it all mean?

What does it all mean? I was expecting THREE wires, and if I turn off the power it goes dark, and I want to play with my new toy.

Ok, the two outside ones are Earth, but why do I need two? How..? what..?...ahhh! No way am I asking a real person!

No way am I asking a real person!
Good thing I'm not a real person.
Could it be because it's wired for a three-way switch? As in, a switch on two sides of a room that operate the same light? If that's the case, I believe you could join the grounds and fuggedaboutit, but, since it is electricity we're talking about here, you should probably find out for sure. I don't know, though, you guys may have some kind of kooky wiring over there. Honestly, this is the kind of thing you can find on the rest of the internet. Godspeed!

Thanks, Tsuga, but I tried the internet first, and it was all 'twist the figgot round the bladgett insert into the fairy hole and cover the roundall using a piece of bent coat-hanger to keep your hands free' which is why I asked here. I need PICTURES.

'twist the figgot round the bladgett insert into the fairy hole and cover the roundall using a piece of bent coat-hanger to keep your hands free'

That's the annoying thing about the internet, isn't it? No matter what you search for, the first page of results is always porn.

Yesterday and this morning I´ve been taking photos out of photo albums (early sixties to early nineties).

And now I feel very dizzy and lightheaded. Could this been caused by me having been breathing in old chemicals oozing off these pictures, that hadn´t been exposed much to light and air for decades? I even wobbled for a moment earlier while walking a few steps.

HCE

What kind of photo albums? I think adhesives from the albums are a more likely culprit than the photos themselves.

Mistoffelees
14:50 / 31.03.08
Most of the pictures weren´t glued into the albums. There were all different kinds of albums: there were rows of transparent sleeves for the photos and other albums, where two corners of a photo were stuck in tiny triangle shaped pockets.

The only other explanation I found for the dizzyness was the change in weather. It was snowing last week, and since yesterday we have 16°C.

How would one go about sending a letter from Britain to America?

Olulabelle
16:11 / 02.04.08
One would address it to the relevant person, and put the relevant address on it, take it to the post office and say, "I wish to send this letter to America", at which point the lovely post office person would take the letter, stick an airmail sticker on it if one requires it to get there quicker than six weeks later, charge the relevant postage and put it in their 'letters to America' section.

Is this a joke?

No. I'm just rather far from caressing the slipper of practicality.

It may or may not be a joke, but I still don't know how to make my US mobile phone dial a UK number, and I find myself looking up ridiculous things to make sure I'm formatting UK addresses correctly. So I can relate. (Although in my case I think the former is because my phone provider actually does not provide me with a way to make international calls.)

In case it's of help, most US addresses go like this:

(street number) (street), (apartment number or letter if any)
(city), (two letter state abbreviation) (zip code)
USA

Zip codes (or US post codes) are either five digits long or five digits, then a dash, then four digits. The extra four digits almost never matter and just make routing quicker and easier for the postal service.

Speaking of addresses. Does anyone know the standard way to write an address in the UK?

If my street address is 22 Barbelith Street and I live in flat 4, do I write

4/22 Barbelith St
Flat 4, 22 Barbelith St
22 Barbelith St, Flat 4

Or, since I live in a house with some flats but only one slot in the front door, should I just omit the flat number?

They really should have given me a welcome pack at the airport.

Middle one, I'd say. Preferably on separate lines:

Flat 4
22 Barbelith St
London
POSTCODE

Whisky Priestess

You probably want to add the county after the city or town name if you are anywhere other than London, though, thus:

Flat 4
22 Barbelith Street
City/Town (e.g. Guildford)
County (e.g. Surrey)
POSTCODE
