They really should have given me a welcome pack at the airport.

That's a joke, but wouldn't that be cool? I remember my Italian friend relating a story from her first time staying in the UK with another friend. In Italy (or, at least, the province she came from) post gets dropped off in little postboxes outside the house or at the gate (American-style). So on her second day here, she tried to stop a strange man pushing envelopes through the front door...

The buster.

Hello folks,

My iTunes has started randomly insisting on downloading every CD I put into the computer, even though I just want to play it through the computer because my stereo is busted. It didn't always do this. It used to politely ask if I wanted to download or not. How can I make it remember its manners??

I think:

Go to the iTunes drop down menu.
Then on to preferences.
From there to Advanced.
3-Options- General/Importing/Burning
Go to Importing.
Beside 'On inserting CD' you should have a menu giving you options:
-Show CD
-Begin Playing
-Ask to Import CD
-Import CD
-Import CD and eject.

Pick 'Ask to Import CD'.
Click Ok or Apply or whatever.

Other than that I really don't know.

Man, do I feel a right tit for asking a favour after an extended leave of absence. But ah, be that as it may...

Anyone here have any experience with hooking up DVD players through a 3-way cable splitter? If you do, and it works, I so owe you a round.

"What does it mean if someone asks you if you whistle in French???!!??"

Charlie Brooker used that phrase in his most recent comment is free article, maybe they were just stealing it from there?

Is there a link to the article and was it about Gok Wan?

Thanks, Tsuga, that is exactly what I was having trouble with, but had a more technical-minded friend come over and suss it out for me. (Not before I called every piece of equipment involved some very dirty words.)

Is Darrell Rivers an old user in a new suit? I'm having a hard time reconciling hir freshly minted suit # with the barbel**e prickliness and intimate knodge knowledge.

'tis Nina. The thread in which the unmasking occurred has now been deleted, having been started by the Knodger himself.

(The unmasking was done by Nina herself, otherwise I wouldn't be posting about it again).

She may have admitted it, but I think it still seems better to have to figure it out. I may only be saying this because I managed to, but I don't think so. I mean, where's the mystery?

I can't help but feel Enid Blyton would be on my side.

I'm only just creeping into the modern world, and the other day tried to download some music for the very first time. Sadly, having paid in money to receive it, my laptop says, well, no:

ifni

I've got Vista basic and Adobe 8.0, but wonder if the dowload just didn't work or whether I haven't done something really really obvious.

ps. Heh. So much for screen grabbage. It reads "Adobe Reader could no open file "Infi.zip" because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and not properly decoded).

The most obvious reason would be that Adobe Reader isn't supposed to be opening Zip files, and I've no idea why it's trying to. Do you know where the file is on your hard drive? Windows should be capable of opening Zip files, unless Vista has crippled that capacity, or you could download Winzip or WinRAR - just Google those.

I just downloaded Winzip 11.1 and tried to use that to open it but got the message 'Invalid command line parameter'. I think I'd better try to contact the vendor. Thanks anyway. (the file is in my music folder, btw.)

Pingle!Pop
15:48 / 15.04.08
That's odd; you'd expect Adobe Reader to not be able to read it, but Winzip is made for Zip files. I think poking the people you bought it from is indeed the best option.

Actually, while I'm around this thread and it's on a (very faintly) techy note, I'd like to ask a boring question about printers.

As in, what exactly is wrong with them?

It seems every printer I own quickly develops the same problem: a tendency to do that lines-across-the-page thing which the maintenance pages always say means the nozzles need cleaning, but with varying results upon actually cleaning the nozzles, and with this happening so regularly that it's a problem most of the time.

Am I just incredibly unlucky with printers? Is it a problem with non-brand-name ink cartridges? If it's the latter, where should I get cartridges from? My default is to just find the cheapest on eBay; an extra 50% on top of this would easily be worth it if it stopped the problems, but the price of the actual brand name ones put them out of the question altogether.

Is this laser or bubblejet printing?

Inkjets. I just want it to print decent quality photos and not cause loads of hassle.

In the UK, is there anything legally preventing a member of the royal family from becoming Prime Minister?

Depends on how you define "Royal Family." If you mean someone who had any chance of becoming heir to the throne standing for PM, there's no legal impediment but it would be vanishingly unlikely due to the unpopularity of such a move.

If you mean people related to the Royal Family, they can and have. Bloody nepotistic aristos.
