Isn´t a stun gun the kind of device US cops use to electrocute or taze people?

Do you mean the device that Anton Chigurh uses in No Country for Old Men? With such a blow to/into the head, can there even be time for the nervous system so that the animal can feel the pain before it´s unconscious or dead?

Are there any shops that let you try on headphones before purchase. I mean the ones that go in your ears not over them. It seems a bit unhygenic but how are you supposed to know what they sound like?

The thing Chigurh used was a pneumatic version of what is now done with electricity, more or less. It's not the same thing.

Please don't make me look for sources.

so...I'd like some info about the process in which an American citizen marries a non-citizen and the non-citizen gets a green card. how crazy is the interview, do you have to be living together, what are the rules after you get married...etc?

preferably from someone with some personal experience or at least secondhand experience, as opposed to people (like me) who only have knowledge based upon romantic comedies seen on TV.

I'll ask my brother the specifics, but I do remember that his marriage, while ultimately a bad idea, was for real; but it still took a long time and some hoop-jumping for her to get a green card.

The rules have tightened after the creation of Homeland Security.

I was nearly involved in a wedding in 2000, but what I learned then no longer applies. I believe there are a few home visits now, but I can't say for sure.

Has anyone ever had any luck with jobs websites?

I'm checking a few of them fairly regularly. I've had three bullshit false starts from responding to them (a 'teaching job' with no training, a shitty commission only Cobra sales job, and some shite about updating a database) and I'm wondering if it's worth carrying on with my searches. The thing is that they do update all the time, unlike the high street. And there's only so many times one can go around little fucking book shops and record shops where you're only going to get work if you know somebody, really. So, yeah, has anyone found anything good, jobwise, on the web?

That reminds me. Has anyone ever had any luck with stress releif, like for example shooting someone?

I've never actually got a job from a job website, but I have been introduced to an agency who have gone on to get me a job. Up in Scotland S1 jobs is pretty good, but I couldn't really recommend any more general sites.

I'd recommend a punching bag, which is more legal and might even get you in shape.

I've had zero luck from job websites like Monster. however I have landed a few interviews from craigslist and I think once from idealist.org.

I've heard agencies are better.

also rather than going to big job search sites I've had luck figuring out what industry I'm looking in, looking up individual websites, and applying directly to a business.

sadly the best way to get a job is, as always, to know people who know people. who do you know? who do they know?

I once got an interview because I spent five minutes talking to some guy at the bar and that was good enough for a "reference".

also, it helps to look in an industry (say, non-profits) where no one has any idea what you do (say, IT). it was impossible for anyone who interviewed me to get any sense about how competent I was with computers, because there's about two people in our whole agency who can unjam a printer, let alone troubleshoot a database.

Blogs. Hello, i want to start a Photoblog, and just wondered if anyone had any particular recommendations for a reliable, easy-to-update, and fairly customise-able blog-site? im not especially web-handy, though can do basic html stuff, but this will be a blog that need to look good as much as the photos looking good, if you know what i mean.

Any ideas?

Ta la.

I hate hate hate agencies and things like Monster.com, mainly because I don't like applying for jobs when I don't know where they are. Guardian jobs is quite good, but I have brand loyalty because I got a job off there - it's quite high traffic, though, so lots of people will apply for the job you are applying for.

I like MMTIC's idea of choosing a sector, or even just looking at specific companies you like to see if they are hiring. FSVO "like", obviously, it doesn't have to mean that you are deeply in tune with the work they do - it could just mean that you use and like their products. Neither Soreen nor Fullers do that much hiring it seems, but after that you'll probably have a good chance seeing something if you click through lots of "Working for us" links.

Lea-side: get a Flickr account and paste the photos you want from it on to a livejournal, possibly. Maybe some other blogging service might be better, but I'm not well up on those. Flickr all the way, though.

I like tweaking Wordpress, as far as site software. Or, y'know, you can customize the Wordpress.com site presentation itself.

Blood--or hints thereof--when you blow your nose: not evil or cancer is it? Because it only happens when my allergies are giving me the business.

Triplets

How much coke do you do, on average, Kali? This might be nature's way of saying too much or, possibly, not enough.

Nosebleeds can be a symptom of allergies, yeah. It's gross and disconcerting but, if it's not a lot of snotblood, I wouldn't worry too much. See doctor if symptoms persist/worsen etc.

Might be worth asking around your family -- I used to get them more often than I wanted, and if I'm sick/allergic I still do, because apparently my mother's side of the family has a tendency toward thin veins. Moisture levels also affect it -- now that I'm living on the island I don't have them very often any more.

Kali, Queen of Kitteh
01:30 / 19.06.08
Um, honestly, I've never done coke. Nor meth. Have never seen the appeal.

It's just fairly recent--as in recent, I mean, the past year--when my allergies have really acted up. I think it might have to do with cat dander and me not policing the house to get rid of cat dander. I am an okay housekeeper but I leave drifts until they get so obvious I can't avoid them.

I can't believe that anyone thinks I do coke. That's so weird. I don't even do caffeine.

Only a coke addict would say so, surely?

Joking aside, I don't think any of that. You're quite easy to wind up, dude :-P

I do get blood sneezes myself. Never realised it could be from my yearly hayfever but makes a whole lot of the sense.

Axolotl

Wikipedia as ever is your friend. Here you can find causes for nosebleed including hayfever. So chances are if it occurs when your allergies are playing up it's nothing more serious than that.

Post script: It also tells you that in severe nose bleeds blood can make it through the tearducts and out the eye. Which for me is pure nightmare fuel. *shudder*

I use to get blood sneezles so bad I sometimes would wake up coughing up little blood clots that had drained down from my sinuses in the night.

Both disgusting and scary, but the situation eventually went away on its own, I think it was the dry air.

You might want to see a doctor, just in case the bleeding is a sign of something serious. A vitamin deficiency may also be involved.

My newly established next-door-neighbours have shown an annoying tendency to park cars across the driveway of my house blocking my car in.

This morning I asked them to try and not do that. But, presuming that they may ignore me, my next step will be to speak with their landlord and see if he can prevail upon them to be a little more considerate. Beyond that...

Does anyone know what my rights are in this matter? If they're blocking my cars access and entrance to the driveway is that illegal? What can I do other than switch on "Evil Prick" mode and start blockading their drive whilst barricading mine (because, let's face it, that won't help matters)?

Here is a police link, which helpfully says "maybe".

Looking around it looks like it may vary from council to council, so it might be worth checking with your local council. They may be able to put some road markings down making it an offence to park there as well. If you're in London I believe parking wardens can issue tickets for people who park across drives.

That said, you're probably better trying talking it out if the neighbours are at all reasonable.

It's what I'm hoping for. I've never experienced bad neighbours really and don't particularly want there to be any aggro.

Fingers crossed for reason, else I unleash the cyborgs.

It's not *that* hard to move one car with another car.

Just saying.

Lie. Tell them you are a community midwife and that being unable to drive for even the ten minutes it takes to wake your neighbour could be the difference between a baby living or dying.

It's what my Mom did, only she actually was a midwife. So I suppose it made more sense.

How long does it take to fly from the UK to French Polynesia?

Char Aina

I don't think you can go from the UK, so you'll need to go elsewhere first. I'd suggest France if speed is important. If you like being on a plane, you could go from Osaka or LA. I have no idea how long it takes from anywhere, unfortunately.

The only folk who really go with any regularity are < href="http://www.airtahitinui.com/">Air Tahiti Nui, so I'd ask them.

I recently "upgraded" to Firefox3, and now when I leave a website I'm automatically logged out. I've adjusted the preferences so that it remembers my passwords, but I still need to log-in each time I come back. Can anyone advise me on how to stay signed in to Barbelith permanently like I used to be?

A-Hu Li, it depends on the route, but Air New Zealand and Air Tahiti both fly via LA, so I'd figure at least 22 hours with some kind of layover in LA.

Ah - looking up each leg, the shortest flight from LON to LAX is 11 hours, and LAX to PPT is between 8 and 8.5 hours, so in theory, you could do it in 19... add 1.5 hours for switching terminals and that, and it's 20.5 hours.

It's kind of fun doing that, by the way - you chase the sun one way (one reaaallly long evening) and you get an extra sunrise on the other way.

And I just saw a poster for this:
Heritage of Pride Events: NYC Gay Pride 2008

looks pretty sweet!

strange I just saw it today for the first time. subway posters seem to get put up, like, the day before things. I've missed a couple of parades that way.
