Does anyone know the ancient Greek words for Sweet and Iron?

Jack Fear
13:55 / 06.03.08
Depends. Is this for a tattoo?

Jack Fear
13:59 / 06.03.08
Sorry, that was unnecessary.

Anywez: I can't vouch for the accuracy or this'yar site, but sweet would see-e-e-e-eem to be glucos and iron, sidereos or sideros, depending on context.

Those are transliterations, of course. In the original alphabet, they look more like complex math equations.

Cheers - it's for character names for an eclogue, actualy. I've gone with Sideros and Kapharos, the latter being closer to pure but still a bit sweet.

1) How do I do stuff to my Myspace page so that it looks less shit? I mean, I know basic HTML etc but I can't work out which buttons to click to change stuff around.

2) In related news, I need a nice reliable image host. Doesn't have to be free, but cheap would be good. I just want something that will let me host pics for auctions, my putative art blog etc.

Myspace: Hell if I know. There are ways, but I don't know them.

Images: I'm quite pleased with Flickr (which was partially built by Cal, who built part of this place while not doing Flickr, which works better than here for what it does, which is host images and let people network via them).

It's a shame that Flickr's upload facility sucks my f****** arse.

... if you don't want the community than perhaps Picasa?

I have a flickr account but it's not letting me hotlink images to my Myspace blog. It could be that this is some Myspace douchery, of course.

There was a thread on editing myspace pages over on Dissensus, but that seems to be buggered at the moment. Hmm.

not here right now, you need to put the HTML that you want in the "About Me" box. It really exercises me from every possible point of view, but here and now are not the place or time for me to express my RAGE AND FURY at this GAPING HORRIBLE USABILTY HORROR AAAARGFH

Having had a myspace page for a year I tried to personalise it and then ended up deleting it instead. Vincennes has wrapped any explanation for this up in capitals.

Yes, mine filled up rapidly with spam people offering, not 'penis', but actually cock enlargements. Presumably this is Web 2.0, or perhaps Web 2/decency nil.

Oh yeah, big ups on Picasa.

Okay, I have a question about a name. It's "Noldy". I met this guy who is of Swedish descent and this is his name. He says it is a short or variation form of something else. I am at a loss. I cannot figure out what it is. I have googled my head off and nothing seems to come up.

What the heck is it? Does anyone know?

A quick goog reveals Noldy is definitely a surname but one I can only find in American censuses. I'm sure you already know this.

Ask him?

I only found these as male swedish first names:
Nanne, Nannulf, Nansen, Natanael, Navn, Nels, Nenne, Nicklas, Niclas, Nicolaus, Niels, Nikki, Niklas, Niko, Nikodemus, Nikolaus, Niku, Nils, Nisse, Njord, Noak, Norman.

Maybe his parents were Tolkien fans and Noldy is short for Noldor?

He told me to guess. So, for our first date, it would be really cool if I could guess his name. Rumpelstiltskin?

Maybe not.

To be fair, he is trying to guess my 'orrible first name, as well.

He gave me a clue that might help, which is, "It doesn't sound like Nolte, as in Nick Nolte". That is what I originally thought. He also said it was a first name of two celebrities. I am thinking "Nowles", maybe?

Anyway, I am dating! I have a date!

Papess: I'm thinking the nickname is based on the last syllable, rather than the first—i.e., Arnold.

Fits in with at least one celebrity, anyway...

I am dating! I have a date!

I also figured this! Dude! Go you! As a current player of les dating game I'm happy for your excitement. I love the courting period!

Also, I reckon Jacques Crainte might be onto something. Noldy. Nold. Arnold.

ooh, I thought it might be a second part of a name. Thank you, everyone. I will let you know next weekend if I/you got it right or not. I may not impress him with my genius, but he'll have to admit I am resourceful.

Trips: This is very exciting. I haven't had a proper date in going on 4 years. Yay me. Actually, I am so nervous I might vomit. Do I really want to do this again?

GRAMMAR QUESTION

I'm in the midst of rewatching Kubrick films. If I were to look at him in a new light, critically-speaking, would I say:

I'm critically reappraising Kubrick
or
I'm reappraising Kubrick critically

Which is it? Or is it neither? HALP!

ONLY NICE THINGS
11:52 / 12.03.08
"I am reappraising Kubrick's work" - unless you are actually writing a critical reappraisal, in which case "I am writing a critical reappraisal of Kubrick".

All Acting Regiment

Yeah, I think 'reappraising' already includes the idea of being critical.

I wonder, does anyone else hate the 'noun adjectivally' form? 'Was it a good thing mentally?' 'This is a good tart liminally' and so on.
