I've been trying to hunt down a certain quotation for ages, now, with no luck (I want to use it to begin a story I'm writing). I've no idea who wrote it, and neither could I tell you the exact words, but it goes something along the lines of: "If I could only bring back just one flower of Faery, then the world would never be the same again." Ring any bells, anyone?

It could be from Tad Williams´ novel The War of the Flowers.

Someone I know online is looking for "fiction titles for teens in grades 7-12 that have a transgendered protaganist and pretty much a positive and self-affirming/ self accepting outcome." Any suggestions?

I don't know of any personally, but I did find this page, which has a couple possibilities. Seems there's more non-fiction available. Good luck.

Thanks for that, Mistoffelees. I'm pretty sure it's not that book, since I know it's in something I've read, and I've never read that. Looks like a good read, though, and I think I'll have to order it from the library, soon...

On the TG fiction question: I've already mentioned this elsewhere, but just for the record, the second Oz book, The Land of Oz, while aimed at a slightly younger reader, has TG stuff at its core, which carries on into the next book and subsequent volumes in the series.

How do I turn off the mouse-click sound in Explorer? I absolutely hate it.

I think it's start/control panel/sounds and audio devices, and in the window scroll down, I think it is "start navigation" that makes the sound. But, in any case, you click on the sound you want to change or remove to highlight it, then on the popup below choose "none".

Literary question: Who's an English poet, perhaps a contemporary of Marvell and Donne and the metaphysical crowd who committed suicide by hanging because of a lost love?

I've scoured the internet (well, I say "scoured"; I've wrestled with Google a bit) and have dug up a bunch of poets from that school who died in unfortunate ways - hanged for catholic conversion, took poison rather than accept poverty - but not the one I'm looking for. Any ideas?

So. The minimum wage pour moi is £4.60, and a 12-hour working day on that basis = 12 x 4.60 = £55.20 a day.

So, is a 12-hour working day where the pay is only on commission, as bad an idea as it's seeming to be right now? If the comission is £25 per person you get to sign up to a charity, door to door sales-style? And people need bank accounts for it to work? Because, to make up to minimum wage, worker here needs to get at least two people ...

Does this sound reasonable? If there's also a chance of a job with a regular wage, would it be better to take that one instead?

I think you have to be a certain type of person to work effectively on commission. Are you prepared to be overly pushy towards strangers?

Personally, I'd go for the set wage, being paid ONLY on commission sounds quite dodgy to be honest.

Yeah, this is what I'm thinking. I've been to an interview, been out on a day of working with the people to see what it's like, and have been offered the job. I'm very chuffed to have a chance at working, problem is I'm working to support study and the whole 10am - 10pm day isn't going to sit well with that, aside from the comission issue.

In 1995 I was selling gas door to door on commission only around the choicest areas of Plymouth. It was the most utterly miserable and soul destroying job I have ever had the misfortune to get. 60 hours a week? I shudder.

Oh wow ...

Stage 5: The De-Merch and Bells:

The De-Merch process begins as soon as the FRs come back to office. Their sales are tallied up onto sheets and their forms collected ready to be sent to Cobra. It would seem that that should be the end of the day, as the FRs have now sold all they can and sorted out their paperwork but that is not the case. Leaders will take their new people aside and talk to them about their day.

This is crucial as new people very often have poor sales tallies. A new person coming home to his/her mum or dad or girlfriend/boyfriend and explaining that they have made £25 will be followed by that new person being persuaded to find a new job and not turning up the next day. So the new person is made to feel like they are doing brilliantly and that they will soon make it. They are then sent home happy and smiling to tell parents and partners how they will soon be a leader. If a new person has done great then they might be invited to stay for a little while and learn more.

Meanwhile, observations are taken back to go through the rig moral of the close interview while FRs return from the field and practice pitch with their crew. Leaders wishing to leave to catch the end of the football, see friends etc are encouraged to stay for later. Some offices will then perform the ritual of bells.

This takes place after all the observations and new starters have gone home and involves all the leaders and some non-leaders standing around in a circle around a real bell. The FRs then clap their hands in a tribal-like fashion to loud dance music as one by one, all the leaders who have rang the bell (between £60 - £80 depending on the office) come up and ring the bell to wild applause. Those who have scored one sale below the bell are then hauled up to do a chicken dance, as they have not hit their target.

It would seem to the unsuspecting eye that there are only two types of people at bells; those who have rang it and those who have chickened. Of course, many (most in fact) in the crowd will likely have scored below a chicken and many others who have done worse will be sent home. But it is all great fun and leaves you feeling great, especially if you go up and ring that special bell.

Yeah, dude. Been there, done that. Sometimes yo get to ring the gong! I did it for a month or so, but I had money behind me and other things going on. It is a great way to meet some wacked out people.
If you have a job you go to after starting your Cobra shift and before ending it with bells, you can still get by. Just don't let them catch you, or hear tell of a life outside the world they are creating for their employees.

One rather enterprising chap, who I copied as soon as I saw him in action, used to make one big concerted effort in the mornings and then bunk off. Working smart, as they will no doubt have said to you.
He'd hit a big business, school or other large workplace, and then take the rest of the day off regardless of his results. Some days he made ten, twenty, even thirty sales in a few minutes. Some days he made none at all. The average was good enough he got to be a leader, and he ended up having new starts working for him, paying him tithe(Charisma and a willingness to decieve the employer as much as possible without breaking the law will get you far with these guys).

I didn't stay long enough for the ladder, but using his sytem I managed to get myself some cash, some great chat, chased by skinheads, meet an ex-cobra stripper who by then owned her own club, and still leave room to work through the afternoons in a cafe by the beach.

I also broke my foot skating the Subiaco bowl one day, which was great fun to explain when I got back in.

So yeah. Hell, but good for some things.

Please help!!!

I've tried to work this out several times and have come up with at least 3 different results, none of which I think are right...

When is this time in GMT:
Friday, 1st of February
2pm PST (5pmEST)

And for future reference, how do I work this out?

I have looked at several time zone reference tables and am still very confused... not least because there appear to be several time zones each anacronym could stand for!

It must be 10pm right?

There are 6 hours difference between me and PST (my work), and 2 between me and GMT (my family back home).

Yeah I would say 10pm...

Ah, don't know then. (A good tip, if they're an English band, is to add "Stewart Home" to your search term when Googling. If they're Nazis, he's almost certainly had a pop at them somewhere).

Wouldn't an anachronym be, by definition, out of date?

Due to the recent violent burglary incident mentioned elsewhere on the board, I now need to
a) buy a new laptop for under £700
b) ask a stupid question

So
a) can anyone recommend from personal experience the Sony Vaio T7100, Samsung X22 or R20 T2250, or the Toshiba Satellite Pro U300 series? I need something under 3kg as it will be a frequent commuter between Kentish Town and Kilburn. Or should I just say bye-bye to the optical drive and go for an ultra-tiny, ultra-cheap Asus?

b) do most or some new laptops come with Word/Office pre-installed? if so, which? if not, how much will this cost?

All help appreciated. Would ideally like to tramp down to Tottenham Court Road and get it over with tomorrow, as I'm missing it sorely and have a shitload of work to do over the weekend.

Not quite an answer but I always advise against getting the pre-installed packages for office etc. I'm not sure if it's any cheaper, and frequently you don't actually get the disks with the hardware, so if anything goes wrong and you need to reinstall it, you have to either go back to the retailer, or buy a copy (or download a cracked version). Which seems like much more hassle (certainly much more hassle than doing the installing yourself - if you have the time that is), and becomes quite likely if you plan to hang onto the laptop for more than 3 years (mind you the one I have at home is a decade old, was upgraded to run windows ME and as of yet knows-not the internet, so perhaps my advice might not be as applicable to everyone as one might think).
