The eiron is a character in Greek comedy who draws a boaster into looking foolish through innocent questioning and self-deprecation. Eironia as identified as a Socratic technique comes from that role.

However, surely the key point here is that the 17th-century fellows should not describe whatever it is as ironic, not necessarily because it would be anachronistic (although I think that is certainly possible), but because it is not in fact ironic. It's just a pain in the hole.

It would be anachronistic, actually, because chardonnay wouldn't invented for hundreds of years yet.

Jack's right -- I was wondering if one character turning to the other and saying "Isn't this ironic! Like rain on your wedding day!"* would be acceptable, or completely out of place.

Looks like it's safer to just work around it.

*not the actual line

.tramp, newer-model MD players are fantastic. But if you're on a budget, as much as I love my MD gear, I have to admit there are far more affordable options out there. Once you're into the world of digital recording, the actual sound quality is governed more by whether you have a decent mic than what the actual recorder is (assuming you buy something that records at a reasonable bitrate).

If you DO decide to go MD, make sure you get HiMD equipment, as it generally supports USB dumps right to your computer. Pre-HiMD, you could only get original audio off the MD player and onto your system by re-recording it in real time.

After reading the synopsis (synopsese?) for the four main characters, which seem to be centered around their relationship to marriage/the men in their lives, is it worth reading Little Women?

Gosh, I hardly remember Little Women. I read it when I was 12 or so and vaguely remember hating all of the characters except Jo.

I have a random question that I have thought about way too often not to finally sort out... is there a Spanish word for cute? Like how babies and puppies are cute?

Welllll, when the Colombian lady at work sees pictures of my kids, she'll say "Que linda!" and in Cuban Spanish I think it means something like that, too - although I know that in Miami, "Ay, que linda!" is equivalent to "Ag, shame!" in South Africa, which is a specific kind of "cute, little, dear" diminutive thing.

Hm, I always thought linda meant pretty, while bonita means beautiful. Come on, do we have no native Spanish speakers here??

Let's say one were to be posing naked for a night shoot out in the British countryside in late September. What tried and tested methods are there that will prevent one's tackle shrinking and retreating back into one's body for warmth so that one can, erm... show one's best face to the world?

Wool socks and a thermos of hot tea. Or, for the purist, a fluffer.

Cup and thermos of warm water?

Realistically, you're just going to have a fiddle in betwen takes.

Seth

One was hoping one wouldn't have to go the fluffer route. But that's just one's chap, isn't it? One's balls will also be seeking refuge. I guess there are no miracles to be found here, are there?

...when I say 'one' I mean it more in a Metallica sense than a U2 sense.

Seth: Photoshop?

Question: Where can I get hold of replacement parts for a Tascam Portastudio?

Somebody has given me an old 4-track: PortaTWO

But it's missing a drive belt. Where would I get one? A nice, reliable web shop would be best.

Warm coat which is taken away at the last minute and also a warm air battery fan heater should help you out.

I really think my particular problem suggests a niche in the market that needs filling by industrious persons unknown.

I think this is your best bet.

Heat one up before your shoot and wrap it in aluminum foil to keep it warm.

CAUTION: LET HEATED HOT POCKETS COOL FOR AT LEAST FIVE (5) MINUTES BEFORE APPLYING. DO NOT BRING HOT POCKETS WITHIN THE VICINITY OF MR. PERKINS IMMEDIATELY AFTER WARMING HOT POCKETS IN THE MICROWAVE. SERIOUS INJURY MAY RESULT.

I don't know, but if you Google up TapeOp magazine, someone in their forum is bound to have an answer.

I cannot believe that in my head there is now an extraordinarily vivid image of Seth standing naked in the countryside with his manbits inserted into a ham and cheese hot pocket.

Thanks for that.

Not fully naked. I'll be wearing wellies, a furry deerstalker and I'll be smoking a pipe.

And yes, by furry deerstalker I do mean a hat.

Hm, I always thought linda meant pretty, while bonita means beautiful.

I can't be sure about Spanish, but in Portuguese is actually the contrary.

And "cute" is "fofo" or "fofa". Or "fofinho" and "fofinha", if you want that extra-cuteness tone.

Mistoffelees

Yes, let´s pool the different translations for cute!

In german, there are many words for cute situations. There are obvious ones like süß (sweet), and schnuckelig, putzig (if pets clean themselves they do putzen), possierlich (not in use anymore), goldig and the most accurate translation niedlich (need, li as in lips and ch as in chanson).

People from London: I've been looking for a good website that contains for rent appartments in the London area, but I couldn't find any good ones. Do you know about the existence of such sites?

And also are there any good "jobs in London" websites?

thank you.

Ah, schnuckelig, my new favourite word.

In other news:

www.moveflat.com (flats)

www.monster.com (jobs)

Thank you Alex's Grandma's...issues.
I've heard of monster before, but I did not remember until now.

You also can combine schnuckelig and putzig and make it a "Schnuckiputz" (something you would call a really cute person).

Can anyone help recommend words that are the opposite of "oasis", but not "desert"?

To give an idea, let's say I wanted to say that the Daily Mail letters collumn was a place of idiots, but didn't want to be ironic (eg "an oasis of calm, measured acceptence") or overly literal ( eg "a desert of calm, measured acceptence") rather saying "the Daily Mail letters collumn is a [suggested word] of narrow minded, racist bigotry"
