Hoovers / Vacuum cleaners.

A friend is currently having extreme trouble with This Shiny Little Number. We've taken it apart, cleaned every part we can get to, done everything the website says you can do, and yet still, there is no suction.

Has anyone out there got any insider knowledge that I'm missing, or is it the slightly OTT callout fee time?

Most vacuum problems (beyond motor issues) involve either clogging or an air leak, as in something not reassembled quite right. I know those Dysons have many parts to them that might not get seated quite correctly. I think I took apart my sister's one time, and one thing I seem to remember that superfine dust can build up inside the cyclone chambers, you'd actually have to bang it out. But hell, that was a few years ago, I don't trust my memory. Good luck.

I don't know, but that sounds plausible! Thanks so much, I will follow up on this lead.

A couple of questions for you all. For quite some time now I've been thinking about getting a tattoo. Nothing flashy, just a black ink recycle symbol on my shoulderblade. Given the population of the site I'm sure there are primates out there with a bit more experience in the field than I so with that in mind.

I'm currently in the process of losing a fair amount of weight, and have recently been doing more weights at the gym. Should I hold off getting the tat until I've reached my target weight/body image?

Is there anything I should be checking/asking the tattooist when I look for someone to do the work? There are a lot of parlours around in Surrey.

How much can I expect to pay?

ANSWER ME!

I think that you should not just choose a random tattooist, do some research on the innernet and find one whose work you really, really admire. If necessary be prepared to travel. I know you only want a simple thing now, but it can still go wrong and you could also end up wanting more. Better to find a good tattooist and stick with them.

I have just been looking at the work of Jo at Modern Body Art in Birmingham. I met a girl with lovely fruit and ravens which Jo did and it is amazing. I think she only takes on custom designs. If I were you I would find a tattooist who does do some custom designs, because then you know they're in it for the art of it and not just to make money by whacking out little red hearts on girls bottoms. Not that there's anything wrong with having hearts on your bottom if that's your groove, I expect that the tattooists who do them get pretty good at them...

I think you should lose weight before you get your tattoo, because although your shoulder doesn't change much it's best to have the tattoo done on a bit of your body that you plan will remain the same shape.

About price, lots of tattooists have a minimum charge. Maybe around twenty quid?

I'm going to pimp the Bod Mod 101 thread for all of your tattoo and other self decorating questions.

for the cheat sheet verison:

1. a tat shop should be clean enough to eat off of. Really.

2. the artist should be able to answer all of your questions about pre and after care in a friendly respectful manner. You should ask about sanitary practices which MUST include autoclave and new needles. You should feel that you could call them or show up if you needed to. Treat them like you would a dentist, the work is even more permenant.

3. Ink changes over time. As you age, change body shape, tan, pale etc. It's less important about to have it done before or after you lose weight and more to think about where on your body you are having it placed. If you've never had a tattoo before you don't know how you'll heal or if you will have an allergy.

ALWAYS GET THE FIRST ONE SOMEPLACE ON YOUR BODY YOU CAN EASILY CARE FOR!!! Some people are allergic to the inks, really, it sucks to discover when you can't see the piece. This is especially an issue with some colors of ink.

Yeah I know so many people get them on their backs or butts but after care is very important. If you can't see it make sure you have a dedicated person in your life to help you make sure it is clean and healing properly. While they do heal much like a scrape you need to be able to see the changes and keep it clean.

Also it is traditional to tip your artist, you should include this in any cost.

Oh. Damn. I'm a real jerk, then. I had no idea. Then again, I paid with a credit card, at a cash register, and there was no tipspace.

I think tipping is different in America. Tipping over there is de rigeur for most things isn't it? But much like sueing any available person when you fall over, just because they do it there does not mean we should blindly copy them. I've never met a tattooist in the UK who expects a tip.

There's an article on tattoo etiquette here which explains why American tattooists expect tips.

Impugning the good name of the US of A by calling us litigious? I'll sue you for slander. Actually, you guys do have stricter laws about libel and slander, don't you? That is, it's easier to sue for defamation? That's my question.

can someone explain the word 'attempt' to me, please?

seems that an 'attempted murder' is executed [pun intended] when one is simply "ready willing and able" to bear arms against an insurgent force...

my dictionary seems to want me to try to perform something, seemingly a deliberate action. nothing about simply 'being able', but actively pursuing the goal...

sheesh, is it me, or is it that pesky military commission??

Anything a bit more in this vein?
Just coz I find it hard to consider sites like google / barbelith that are so specific to one purpose. I am new to this but I need to get a grip on what makes some sites sucky (in my opinion, of course....) and what makes others better.

Ling-Ling I tried the link but it went no place...?

I've been inked in a few places outside of the states and in Ireland especially I was advised to tip a certain percentage. Same with piercing.

In studios where it wasn't normal I brought the artist presents. I guess my feeling on it is that tipping or gifting an artist/someone in the service industry (tattoo/hair stylist/grooming/ personal consultant/bartender) is it is a way of saying I appreciate their personal efforts. Sure they get a fee to do the job but I recognize that they've done extra effort not to just get by on the minimum amount.

For example my regular tat artist always does more work than he charges me for and I always tip him more than I'm supposed to. Sometimes he's redone something for free or stayed an extra hour to finish a piece for me. My piercer just redid one of my pieces after it fell out and did a super fast reheal. she wouldn't accept payment for the work but I was able to force the tip on her. I bring my goat milk farmer wine and treats and have in the past chased down the garbage collectors to give them cookies.

When I've been in the UK I know I don't have to tip my bar staff but as they're busy people trying to smile and deal with boozy pests clamoring for more it somehow feels right to still catch their eye and drop something down.

I think of my friends waiting tables trying to be speedy and polite to booths full of screaming children and haggard adults. It seems only right to say thank you and to put something extra for them on the table. Same with baristas.

Maybe I'm just tip happy....

As I said, I'm interested, or at least curious about Quakerism and while I have done a certain amount of research I was hoping for some more direct information.

Late to this one, I've not looked at the thread for a while: I heard a story that Quaker writings & approaches were popular with Voltaire & friends. They used to call it 'taking the Quaker cure': you read some Quaker stuff, it sounds so good on paper, then you turn up to some face to face Quaker space and get properly revolted at the arrogance of these people who think they know what God wants & that cures you of your interest for a while.

Still not sure what you mean by 'direct information': I may be able to help you, feel free to PM me.

my belly was done on a living room floor in the middle of a swelteringly hot Boston summer. Bought the artist dinner as well as paid for the ink.

I think my basic sense is that artisans need to be exra double appreciated for doing work you're going to tote around for the rest of your life.

Does anyone speak Italian? I want to send a fairly simple email to an Italian company and I will feel like a doodoohead if I send it in English and just assume someone will be able to understand me.

I promise a postcard from Italy if you can help....

I wish I did but I don't despite having Italian relatives, so am sadly of no use to you. I am aware this makes me crapsville.

Can someone please tell me which is the best free ftp software available? I used to use Fetch when I had a Mac and it was wicked. I want one like that. I used Cuteftp for the free trial and that was okay, but now they want cash I do not have. Then I just downloaded Ftp Navigator but it's impossible to work out.

Thanks a heap Tsuga and yes Google is fabulous. I was, however, only asking cause I was also doing a ton of research. I figure is good to spread that research around a bit, (rhetorically) right?

You're on a PC, Lula? LeechFTP and WSFTP are both "out of print," but still fully functional and reasonably user-friendly.
