Not a whole lot... at some point in the next hour or so, I need to actually write my story for pop11. A friend of mine just finished his masters thesis and tore the opposition apart while defending it, so drunken hijinks might be in my future this evening as well.

Yeah, my pop.11 story is not going well at all. In fact, I think I may have developed a fear of story-writing which, bearing in mind my long and [I admit] often overbearing posts here, may be hard to believe. Indeed, since joining Barbelith I've written more than I have in years (though non-fiction, obviously). I think part of my problem is that I've had SOOOOO much fun writing music this past year or so, writing a story seems almost like a task. Maybe I take writing prose too seriously? I dunno...

Really looking forward to reading everyone's stories, BTW. I reckon there's a hell of a lot of talent in pop.11. Hmm...maybe I am scared?

Yeah, the fact that I'm about to toss something out to be read and criticized by a bunch of people I've never met who could be astronomically better writers than me– it's been in the back of my mind for awhile. But whatever- caution to the winds and all that. In fact, I'm gonna go write now. Good luck with the story, and good luck with the animals.

Cheers mate; you too. I'll hopefully have something ready for Monday.

G'night everyone.

Hello everyone!

Sorry, I know it's a bit Early for Late shift just now, but I just wanted to say that I'm about to watch the unreleased 1994 Fantastic Four movie in order to compare and contrast it to the new one in a theatre near you.

Maybe later, I'll share my amazing caffeinated thoughts with you all. Excited? You will be! Auvoir!

Oh, you lucky, lucky bastard. I've been looking for that for so long...

I've seen Captain America, starring JD Salinger's son. I've seen Generation X, with the worst Irish accent ever. I've seen Doctor Strange, with John Mills as the Ancient One. I've seen the Justice League pilot. But that film yet evades me.

Mr Brigade, I imagine I'll be seeing you at work in two nights' time... copyage? Yes? Hmm?

Oh, hello everyone, by the way. I've just watched episode 3 of the 2nd season of Battlestar Galactica, and the knowledge that my downloading mate, having just moved house, won't have his broadband back on for a fucking fortnight is weighing heavy on my mind.

You lucky bastards! I've seen Captain America, starring JD Salinger's son; and I had no idea it was his son -- nice one Haus, that has made that film faaar more interesting in my memory! And a 1994 version of FF4?! Where the hell have I been?

Hello, btw. Hope y'all well.

21:51 / 06.08.05
Hello all - I too have seen Mr Salinger's rubber ears. I preferred the pre-modern Red Skull. I've half finished Justice League, loved Dr Strange partly because nothing really happened in it and for large chunks it seemed like a really slow episode of Dr Kildare, and have only seen the odd episode of the Flash. But yeah, FF has evaded me thus far too.

I was being sincere, btw.... Right, time to log out, shut down, and go and feed my friend's cat. Oh, and guess what HER (the cat's) name is?......

Ans: BRUCE! (I s**t you not!)

NIght all!

Night, Mr writer sir.

There's currently a very cute dog on telly. Unfortunately it's being made to do tricks by someone in a spangly hat. I want to kill them and steal their dog.

I might nick the hat too, come to think of it.

I was sitting on the common the other week and a great dog ran over and through where I was sat reading, completely over excited and wanting to come and see me (I was whistle at dogs or click at them - old habbit) but lacking the co-ordination so just kept running through and past me and turning round and running back at me.

Bless. I saw the best dog ever (present company excepted, of course) on the sand at the mouth of the Dewi - Welsh sheepdog puppy. Just so happy with EVERYTHING.

Hello All

Now what confuses me is I have no issues with sheep-dogs but dog entertainers and fox-hunting really piss me off.
I wonder where the line is?

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK
22:11 / 06.08.05
Personally, I draw the line somewhere between "dogs as great animals and great companions" and "dogs as entertainment and/or (blood)sporting accesories".

Ah, forgive me. I found a bunch of Biscy's puppy photos earlier, but with the addition of beer, have progressed from the weepy stage to the militant stage.

As soon as I start telling my Xbox it's my bestest fucking mate, I'll let you know.

What was I going on about? Sorry, stoned.

Yeah well my parents still have the two pets I grew up with. They are brother and sister silver tabbies. Basically tabbies with persian colours, Grey of their back and sides, black markings and ringlets, with a white underbelly. Cute as hell. But they are getting old, eighteen this month and Leo only has four teeth and Gen she was the runt of the litter and lots like this wizened old kitten.

Gaah. Losing a pet! Hell, man.

I like cats. People think that as a "dog person", I must hate them, but I don't. I like and respect them a lot. I just don't trust the buggers!!! They're fucking cool animals, though.

Parrots are cool. I said to someone the other day it would be cool to have a parrot, and they said (quite rightly, in my opinion) "but it's cruel to keep birds in cages". My response? "Who said anything about a cage, man?" I think I need to get this pirate thing under control. (My dentist isn't helping... as of a few days ago I now have TWO gold teeth. Arr!)

Lots of people think it either cats OR dogs in the diale... battle of the pets. I love my cats but I still suspect them of plotting something, come to think of it I don't think I've every seen them blink.

Stoatie have you ever lived on a boat?

To my eternal shame and regret, no. (The odd holiday excepted).

I'd love to, though. Have you?

I like cats and dogs in vastly different ways.

Cats don't need me around, and tolerate me, which is good for when I work too much and don't want to feel guilt about being away from home a lot.

Dogs are needy little critters who make you feel needed and wanted every time they see you.

Although, I have to admit that my favorite pets are fish. They don't even know you own them.

Stoatie - Knew a chap who lived on a narrow boat moored near Watford. Spent one mid-nineties spring and summer messing around there a lot, *different pace of life*.

Once had a goldfish from one of those darts games at Pinner Fair that lasted twelve years.
They're just not companionable. (is that a word?)
My mum says the cats speak to her. Sometimes I believe she's right.

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK
23:31 / 06.08.05
She probably is. I totally believe dogs (and, I guess, cats) can understand us. And from that position, it's not difficult to posit that the communication can be two-way...

Fish make crap conversationalists, though. Partly I think it's the short attention span. It's like talking to someone on coke. Only smaller, wetter, and more likely to turn their back on you every few seconds.

And they spend all their time in the ... erh bathroom must want to be near the water.

I'm not knocking fish I love the calming influence in Dentist waiting rooms. Had a wisdom tooth out a fortnight back.
Gold teeth Stoatie that must've been steep?

My late cat George (an oriental lilac. See the look in the grey cat's eyes... it's definitely emotion.) once hit one of my mum's friends in the face after she'd called him ugly a few times. This confirmed to me that cats know exactly what's going on.

Well, the first one was when I was signing on (about ten years ago) so that was "free"... the second one's just a crown- the treatment overall was bloody expensive (I basically have shit teeth, having neglected them for so long) anyway... it was kind of a surprise. It was only when I went to brush them that night that I saw it.

I'm wondering if the next time I have expensive dental treatment I can just ask him to remove those and use them to cover the cost...

Nina- cats and dogs TOTALLY know what's going on. When I was at university there was a guy stalking me in a Craigtacular manner. The first time Biscuits (who either loved people or ran from them, basically) met him she went MENTAL. He was so not allowed in our house. (She was also a very good judge of my girlfriends, too... the ones she didn't like were always the ones who I would end up regretting becoming involved with. Of course, I never took her advice until it was too late!)

Hmmm, the George move was spectacular, the fact that it was a determined slap right on someone's cheek was hilarious. I've never met a cat who was quite as on the ball as him. His level of perception always surprised people because he seemed more like a person than an animal. He definitely spoke to people, he'd give you this look of disapproval when you did something stupid, the force of personality was astounding. And subsequently my response to animals changed, I just can't think of them without an awareness of sentience anymore, it's an oddity of my family that we tend to refer to cats and dogs as a bit stupid rather than as dumb species these days and it's entirely down to living with siamese/oriental cats.

Don’t talk to me about dental work! I’m sure dentists fiddle with your teeth and then charge you for more repairs. It all makes sense, dentists make money from bad teeth, now that they are freelance the more bad teeth the better. So you go to the dentist and they may fix the immediate problem but will make sure they need to see you again.

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK
00:17 / 07.08.05
Completely agree on the sentience thing, not so sure on the stupid front- I think the average dog is about on a par with me, brainwise. Cats are cleverer. This is part of the reason I distrust them.
They're obviously as sentient as we are. Just in different ways.

So much time is spent wondering what it would be like to communicate with an alien species, and how it could be accomplished without human language... they should just ask anyone who's lived with a dog or cat for any period of time. It'd save a lot of hassle.

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK

Finsbury- I can see your point, but also now they're freelance, it's less likely you'll keep going to the same one. It's not the whole family dentist, we've-always-been-to-this-guy thing anymore. They know if it fucks up, you'll go somewhere else.

And when I was signing on, the guy deliberately signed me in for as many sessions as possible, which were all really short (which from my point of view was great, cos I'd get really scared and be screaming to be let out) because he got paid by the session.
