The BBC's now saying:

Dummy explosions using detonators only have sparked the evacuation of three Tube stations and the closure of three lines, a BBC correspondent has said.

Bizarre.

more from CNN on the same subject\

Ivan McCracken told Sky News: "I was in a middle carriage and the train was not far short of Warren Street station when suddenly the door between my carriage and the next one burst open and dozens of people started rushing through. Some were falling, there was mass panic.

"It was difficult to get the story from any of them what had happened but when I got to ground level there was an Italian young man comforting an Italian girl who told me he had seen what had happened.

"He said a man was carrying a rucksack and the rucksack suddenly exploded. It was a minor explosion but enough to blow open the rucksack.

"The man then made an exclamation as if something had gone wrong. At that point everyone rushed from the carriage."

ITV news are speculating that it may have been detonators rather than actual bombs going off as they're all much smaller explosions...

Glad it seems only to be detonators.

Possibly not. Most buses these days are sealed fairly tight. Considering it's cold out today I imagine most of the windows were closed - detonator goes off > massive increase in pressure > windows give out.

ONLY NICE THINGS

The unconfirmed nail bomb seems unlikely, as Sax says, to be same people as the attacks of two weeks ago.

Must... resist... cheap... gag.

For reasons mentioned before, it's dangerous to think of al Qaeda as a single entity with a set playbook, but this does seem a bit different... the report sounds like a detonator might have gone off without actiivating its payload...

The nail bomb rumour seems entirely unconfirmed so far - this is exactly the kind of thing that pisses me off, when something that would be a step-up from what we know happened starts being passed around in a panic...

BBC: Dummy explosions using detonators only have sparked the evacuation of three Tube stations and the closure of three lines, a BBC correspondent has said.

Police cordoned off large areas around Warren Street, Oval and Shepherd's Bush Tube stations.

Emergency services also attended an incident on a route 26 bus in Hackney Road in Bethnal Green.

Police in London say they are not treating the incidents on the underground as "a major incident yet".

At Warren Street there were reports of a nail bomb explosion. Sky's Crime Correspondent Martin Brunt said police believe this may have been the sound of detonators going off.

We're The Great Old Ones Now
12:17 / 21.07.05
The early speculations last time were so ludicrously out of kilter with the reality that it seems almost idle to engage as yet; I was on holiday, hearing that the explosive used was 'military grade' from 'experts' on TV. Turns out to have been the Bastard's Bathtub Mix.

So here I'm hearing about nailbombs and detonators and I'm thinking, well, could be. Or it could be an unrelated group doing their best with fireworks and drawing pins. One eyewitness says she saw a man threaten to blow himself up and then run away. If that's accurate, it doesn't seem to be in the same class as the last lot.

At which point, even as I write it, I expect the sky to fall in.
