one witness seems to have said the chap running off was 'english', by which i assume she meant white.
a source also says that the passengers did hang onto teh guy for a bit, but he escaped.
i dont get how, but at least several folks will be able to describe him.

Fuck. I can't believe this is happening again, just 2 weeks to the day after the first series of bombings. BUt this sounds a lot less severe, I guess? Although as many here have pointed out, information is just coming in real time and the real, full story won't be out til later today or something like that.

CNN is saying 'Police said they were not treating the evacuations as a "major incident."' Huh.

I can confirm the smell of burning rubber around Warren Street, and they've cordoned off the top of Tottenham Court Road (which is full of emergency vehicles anyway).

It's slightly disconcerting looking at the map on the BBC news website front page and seeing my street on it, I must say. I bet it was the bus stop outside the Costcutter. Weird.

""English"!!!"

They must have shouted "Blimey!", and not "Crivvens!", "Begorrah!" or "Pobol y Cwm!"

According to the BBC's video news feed, police are now asking people to stay where they are.

A number of Tube stations have been evacuated and lines closed after three blasts in what Met Police chief Sir Ian Blair says is a "serious incident".
Sir Ian appealed to Londoners to stay where they were and said the transport system was effectively shut down.

The minor explosions used detonators only, a BBC reporter said.

In addition, a Number 26 bus in Hackney Road in Bethnal Green had its windows blown out by a blast. There were no injuries.

Large areas around Warren Street, Oval and one of the Shepherd's Bush Tube stations have been cordoned off.

Police in London say they are not treating the situation as "a major incident yet".

One person was injured at Warren Street. There were reports the injured person may have been holding a rucksack containing the detonator.

saveloy, you read my mind.
i thought perhaps he had requested the other passengers "leave i'aht!" as they attempted to detain him.

Okay, at the risk of being ludicrously alarmist:

incident now described as 'very serious' by the Met.

Londoners are requested to stay where we are.

(Note: recent study suggests that networked members of the public are often more informed about the smart move than officials in hierarchical information structures with pre-set actions for emergencies - vide 'don't use the elevators').

I'm nervous because there are reports that investigators have entered Warren Street in chemical gear.

Any data?

The eyewitness reports on skynews keeps changing... one italian saw a guy's rucksack explode a bit, looking like an accident when the guy cursed and panicked.

Doesn't seem that important to Jack Straw - he was just seen leaving the Cobra emergency meeting on BBC to go back to work.

Yes, it is SOP, which is why I feel somewhat silly mentioning it. At the same time, I'd feel even more of an arse if I said nothing and it turned out to be significant.

Sir Ian Blair:

"I have a couple of messages that I really need to give.

"The first is the transport system is going to close down for a short while, while we work out what's happened.

"It's very important that Londoners and people in London stay where they are.

"The second announcement is we will make a further announcement about what the travel implications are.

"What we don't want is lots of people going to railway stations. The trains, as far as I know, are still running."

From PA:

SIR IAN BLAIR STATEMENT
Here is a full transcript of Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair’s statement:
“We know that we have four explosions, four attempts at explosions, and it’s still pretty unclear as to what’s happened.
“There’s certainly a scene at the Oval Underground station, there’s a scene at Warren Street Underground station, there is a scene at Shepherd’s Bush which is on the Underground but is actually above ground and there’s a scene on a number 26 bus at Hackney near Columbia Road, which I believe is in Bethnal Green.
“At the moment the casualty numbers appear to be very low in the explosions.
“The bombs appear to be smaller than on the last occasion.
“I don’t know the implications of all this yet. We have to examine the scene very carefully.
“I have a couple of messages that I really need to give.
“The first is the transport system is going to close down for a short while, while we work out what’s happened.
“It’s very important that Londoners and people in London stay where they are.
“The second announcement is we will make a further announcement about what the travel implications are.
“What we don’t want is lots of people going to railway stations. The trains, as far as I know, are still running.
“It’s just: ‘Stay where you are, go about your normal business’.
“Again, the plan is there, you’ve seen it happen before, it’s rehearsed.
“The emergency services are getting control over a very confused scene.
“Clearly, this is a very serious incident.
“What I’m doing now is I’m going off to Cobra (the Government emergency response committee) to meet the Home Secretary and others to see where we go from here.”

From which I deduce "very serious" is a general press release description, not relating directly to anything in particular, so I wouldn't take it as an indication of increased threat.

warren street... this would be the warren street about thirty yards away from where i am typing, wouldn't it? Chemical attack, you say? Bugger. Does anyone think I should shut the windows, or might it be a little late for that?

Was in the safety of the apple store when this went off (I think) - but was in Hyde Park (again) before I found out there was something going on - I started getting calls to see if i was dead...

Am now back in the safety of the apple store...

Bill - wouldn't worry too much. There was a bit of a smell around Warren Street but I haven't suffered any ill effects from my investigative foray up there an hour ago.

I hope they are caught and sent to prison.

"So, what you in here for, then?"
"Suicide bombing."

Bugger. Two-hour walk home.

Does the combination of detonators-only and "serious incident" reporting (plus the evacuation of University College Hospital) suggest concern over something chemical/biological? Not wanting to be alarmist, but has anyone any updates on the situation at UCH?

It's that creepy insistence that everyone stay where they are that's freaking me out. Reminds me of Resident Evil 2.

(Sorry, there was a - weak, on reflection - punchline of 'silence' wot disappeared because I'm an inept newbie.)

Ganesh, is that how chem/bio bombs work? I'm slightly reassured on that front by the whole 'surprised' bomber post rucksack explosion, but I really don't know what to make of the whole thing. Bungling copycats?

(Blushes, slightly starstruck at actually directly addressing Ganesh.)

Quite right, too. If you all get infected us up North want to know where you are. We already have teams of miners ready to raise the *secret wall* at Watford Gap.

Ganesh, is that how chem/bio bombs work?

No idea. I was under the impression (doubtless gleaned from dodgy shockumentaries) that the chemical/biological load was attached to a separate detonator doodah - but I'm probably angsting over nothing. It sounds like these are simply rather pathetic bombers.
