What? the freerepublic article, do you mean the Guardian article on the White house rejecting the findings of the Pentagons on national security and impending enviromental collapse? ...and as far as the, "Bush's war on the media" article, that was to respond in my own half assed way to the flippin garbage comment which I also throw the lot of what is Fox news. It just proves the point that sometimes reading is not believing. And then maybe you should read them first. If you don't get it...I really don't care.
9 Hurricanes will hit the atlantic this year and heat waves will burn much of what is left of Europe and South America to a crispy crunch. How many more people have to die in France before you guys buy a few more fans out there...oh wait your gonna have to plug them in. The electric grids are maxed already. Just ignore it..it will flush it self out, don't worry the Pope secret is here to save/crucify us all. L.A. had more rain this winter, then ever in known history and it snowed some 18 inchs in Ohio last week. Clean out your eyes, unplug your ears. It seems that the war over fresh water will start soon after 2008 and Colorodo has plenty. Also a lot of hidden nuclear weopons, and they all have guns. Read it and weep. London Bridge is falling down my fair Lady. 3 months from now the U.S. is going to try and pull off the biggest scam yet, and we know, because Bush and Co. has already done it many many many times before. I can smell these vampires moving. Neo-con is a nice way of saying neo-nasi...get it? They want to kill everyone and found the new Eden. Satonists never had these kind of balls.

I'd also like to correct Morpheus on something: London Bridge is not falling down. You can sweet-talk me all you like but I checked. With special tools. Oh yes.

Deja vu.

But, terror sells. Growing up it was the commies are going to nuke us, acid rain was going to dissolve us, AIDS was going to make common diseases kill us, global warming was going to drown us, the gulf stream failing was going to freeze us, the hole in the ozone layer was going to microwave us, a meteorite was going to squish us, it's practically an apocalypse for every occasion, and that was long before we get to 2001 and the news that supposedly there are millions of crack Muslim terrorists out to murderize our freedom loving asses.

It's probably good in the sense that if we stopped because of all the things that we are told might go wrong, none of us would get out of bed any more, but it's probably bad because it can bread apathy and laziness about taking steps to try and cut down on things at a personal level.

I'm not sure that it takes any particular talent to "smell" that

a) neocons have a covert agenda,

b) Bush's reasons for invading Iraq were at least partly motivated by oil interests,

and

c) there's a strong chance that Iran will be the next target of US-led imperialism.

These have all been openly broached in our media for years and are, I think, widely accepted. The fact that Blair doesn't acknowledge any of it - and cleaves to spurious justifications for 'regime change' in Iraq - is one of the reasons he's generally seen as a naive/frankly lying shitbag.

The environmental issues are less widely discussed, but it's certainly out there in our media (as your Guardian link shows), and we're well aware that Bush's government shows little or no regard for the environment.

The only thing that's in any way novel about your schtick, Morpheus, is the fact that you're stitching the New American Century war-mongering element directly to the environmental stuff and concluding (if I'm reading you correctly) not just that the US's Middle East sabre-rattling is motivated by oil interests (a commonly held theory) but that the oil is required in order to survive/prosper within an imminent The Day After Tomorrow environmental disaster scenario (less commonly held).

Is this a fair distillation?

If so, then the question "what fucking side are you on?" is surely something of a no-brainer (as they say). I strongly suspect that the majority of posters here are on the "side" that opposed the war in Iraq, are opposed to steaming into Iran in the same way, and opposed to dying of hypothermia. Thing is, we're on the "side" of the Atlantic where, beyond voting in our own relatively parochial elections next week, we don't have a great deal of power to influence the forces at play here.

Unless you know otherwise? Supposing we accept your 'dooooom'-calling (and I, for one, am gonna count the hurricanes in the Atlantic this year in order to hold you to your prediction), what do you suggest any of us actually do about it?

Is it just me, or does this all have the distinct whiff of innerCircle about it? Older and, er, 'wiser' to the ways of communicating via this here technology, but basically the same piss in new bottles.

9 Hurricanes will hit the atlantic this year and heat waves will burn much of what is left of Europe and South America to a crispy crunch.

See, this I find fascinating. Links? References? Those ever useful but elusive f-a-c-t-s? Or was this, like, a dream? A drug induced vision? What?

Man, people die in hot countries of heat-stroke every single year. The whole Med has its annual toll, just because it suddenly becomes 'news-worthy' hardly spells Armageddon.

L.A. had more rain this winter, then ever in known history

Back this up? Links please. Particularly 'known history' which sounds like a long time in the middle of a Doomlord rant, but probably means 'since such things were recorded accurately and regularly' which for all we non-L.A types know could quite feasibly be 50 years or less. Let's include facts here, please.

2008, eh? Oooooooookayyyyyyy....My ears are open, my eyes assisted by spectacles, but what are you offering here which I don't already know? What can we, you and I, as awake and concerned individuals, do about it?

Is it just me, or does this all have the distinct whiff of innerCircle about it?

It's a reasonably common (if intermittently so) phenomenon on Barbelith, and doubtless on other message-boards too: the lumping together of disparate articles of varying degrees of credibility in order to arrive at a somewhat makeshift (but firmly-held) conclusion which often seems rather fuzzily thought-through and subject to 'cluttering' of the point; the allusions to "psychic twinges" and the like; the prediction of doooom and disaster; the suggestion that the doooom-sayer has access to secret or esoteric information; the scornful urging that we all 'open our eyes'; etc., etc.

The mode of delivery here is certainly nothing new. The proposition itself (that the neocons are trying to obtain total control of the Earth's oil in order to dominate the aftermath of catastrophic climate change) is an interesting one, however, and the fact that Morpheus has made specific predictions (nine hurricanes will hit the Atlantic this year) is atypical.

I think there are degrees. The New American Century stuff is certainly up there in plain view, but I suppose it can be described as "covert" in that, when implemented by Bush's administration, it's usually accompanied by additional, spurious justifications (eg. rather than saying, "we're invading Iraq because we want control of Middle East resources and military access" they said, "we're invading Iraq because it possesses WMDs, has links to 9/11 and requires 'regime change' for humanitarian reasons").

and the fact that Morpheus has made specific predictions (nine hurricanes will hit the Atlantic this year) is atypical

Not necessarily... the trick is for the prediction to provide a bit of leeway. We have before had the prediction of a world-shattering cataclysm predicted on Babelith. When the world singularly failed to shake on the appointed hour, we were informed that we had missed the enormous _psychic_ cataclysm that had occurred bang on schedule.

Since modern science is unable to predict tornadoes accurately, the only logical conclusion is that this prediction is either speculative or based on some mechanism outwith the remit of science - magic, psychic power or similar. This doesn't necessarily invalidate the prediction, but it does make it hard to say what we should be doing about it, since we don't understand its provenance.

Oh, sure, Haus. There was the 'October Black, November Blackest' (or whatever it was) prophecy, the non-materialisation of which was quietly swept under the carpet or, as you say, 'explained' as an enormous psychic catastophe the likes of which our inert sheeplobes could not begin to detect. And on another notable occasion, if I'm remembering rightly, the laughably narcissistic 'rationale' held that the Forces of Darkness had, presumably through reading Barbelith, become aware of the prediction, and had held off on immanentising the eschaton to make the Psychic One appear foolish.

So... I agree there've certainly been precedents on Barbelith in terms of re-e-easonably specific doooom-saying. More usually, however, the degree of vagueness is such that the claim's far too insubstantial to prove either way.

For example, if Barbelith's still tottering along come 2008, the chances of anyone remembering this thread is pretty remote - and, if we're not all scrabbling for fresh water in Colorado, Morpheus might reasonably point out that "soon after 2008" is a stretchy turn of phrase, and we should keep watching the skies anyway.

9 Hurricanes are expected to tear a new hole in the atlantic this summer. Natures own Nuclear bomb.

I think I'm missing something regarding the hurricane prophecy. Is western civilization as we know it going to we wiped about by nine hurricanes? I think not. Granted, 9 is higher than our average of 5, but take a look at 1887. We seem to have made it through that one OK. I was making a list of years with 8 or more hurricanes since 1851 to show just how normal 9 hurricanes is, but the list got long and I got bored before the 1900's even started.

Nine hurricanes? And? There were 10 in 1998 and 11 in 1995. Research before scaremongering.

You've got my attention, but what the hell are you trying to say?

I read the Hurricane article weeks ago and today even fucking fox neocon network posted this today.

That wasn't a prediction it is stuff I've been reading all over the web for years now. The hurricanes are getting numerous and larger then normal. The really insidious thing about all of this is how complacent people are until it hits home and then suddenly everyone seems to find their own particular god and start calling on everyone to fuc king prey all of a sudden. Don't listen to my innercircle jerk...I could give a flying turd about your apathy. All I 've asked is that you consider what I have brought up. Post anything you've noticed and not slam me for it. Or do what most people do and sink your head into a hole...and fuc all.
And yes, I do link the whole global oil grab as a means to weather this post industrial meltdown that most of us are going to see first hand. What I think you should do is look into what is happening and then do...nothing, nothing at all, because doing is what got the world into this mess.
I for one am learning how to start an organic farm. 10 grand and 5 acres of farming land put me into the position to feed 100 people year round. That is what I'm doing for the moment.

Psychic vibe. I had a dream a little over a week ago that an ocean liner was shipping an atomic device into the United States and was being guarded by a vampire who could do that blood to water thing. I don't really expect a bomb to show up anywhere, but the dreeam really shook me up.

Oh leave Morph alone. Dreams really are premonitions. Just last night I had a dream that I made £6.2 million on the markets, won the Booker prize, and found out that I was the heir to the throne of Denmark. And then today I found a 5p on the street.

See

The fear of the dangerous 'other' has always been used to hold societies together. I have this image in my head: at some point in the late 80 there was an anti-Commie two minute hate going on when it was announced that we were wrong. All the placards showing violent Russian soldiers were wrong. We were are war wih the Muslims. We had always been at war with the Muslims. Pepyes was predicting the imminent end of society back in the 1660s.

A mixed bag of ideas there. Sorry, long day.

That aside though, I'm sold. Have just successfully bid on E-bay for a flock of nine Suffolk sheep actually, who will no doubt sustain me for the duration of the forthcoming apocalypse, if I can get them up the stairs.
