Haven't been Barbing much recently, but where are the threads where the 'Brighton Posse'(to be said in best constipated David cameron voice) do this? The ones where some of my closest friends announce they're expecting children? In which case, quite frankly, suck it in. It's a community.
There's plenty of Barbeloids who talk about their 'meat-space' (to be said in best ComicBookGuy voice) shenanigans. Just seems to me that there's a case of lumping us all together going on in Haus' mind - continually getting suits mixed up, wrongly attaching blame for previous misdemeanours etc - which is pretty irritating.

Gah - there are a couple of threads here, at various levels. One is how subgroups within Barbelith normalise and support behaviour, whether that behaviour is essentially benign or otherwise. Olulabelle was annoyed that a group of people in Brighton were using the board to reinforce their sense of social cohesion. I don't know what her reference there was to, but there is a pretty well-attested tendency for this to occur. Unfortunately, it's tricky to tease that apart from behaviours that are destructive but validated by a group echo chamber - such as the "you are dry inside" stuff and the persecution of Rasiel, or the baiting of the Football J'Accusers (although nobody came out well from that farrago). The fiction suits responsible for the egregious stuff were eventually shut out, but, this being old Barbelith, the people were not. I don't know about pent-up aggression, but I do think this exposes us to accusations of double standards.

So, that's the higher level which made it hard for me to see this as entirely light-hearted, which is ultimately my fault, and for which I apologise. On t'other hand, the banter got a bit cookie-cutter, as the Americans say; whatever I said, I got back a quasitherapeutic bit of patronage - I tend to read banter as staying related to the subject matter, whereas largely acontextual comments are, I think, easier to read as abuse.

Might be this that got Olulabelle's goat but I'm guessing.

that's pretty inoffensive though innit? maybe a 'convo thread put here for better input' disclaimer would have made it even more so, but as is it can hardly be worth dredging up the barbannoy thread for.

Well, intentionally or not, Barbannoy does seem to cover irrational irritations as well as rational.

Barring the characteristic fixation on bottoms, MacReady makes a good point. At no point did I intend to equate Harrison Ford with the Twart or "Eddie Murphy", but I can see how it could be read as such and I'm sorry for that.

He also makes a good point about the dangers of confusing suits - in particular from the old Barbelith system where one could change names without limit and register suits without verification. If I am harbouring ambivalences unfairly, then that's bad. Maybe it's my issue, and I should either act on my best understanding or assume tabula rasa, but if anyone wants to clue me in, perhaps by private message, that would be much appreciated.

I'd say Haus's assessment is remarkably insightful, if just a little dour.
Many who would identify with this group converged on Brighton after they joined Barbelith, and many have now left the town, or indeed never lived here at all. Many of the relationships at its core are very old indeed, although not everyone who would identify with the group socializes with each other much IRL (I, for example, don't see much of Quantum, despite the fact that we stalk the same streets).
To say that Barbelith is used by Brighton posse members as a mechanism to reinforce relationships that may be strained by distance and time apart, or to shore up newer relationships, even to vocalise (? can't think of a better word) strong feeling between those that do see a lot of each other IRL is fair enough, I reckon. And, although I can see how it could look like a rather horrible, smug group love-in from time to time, that we can use Barbelith for the above purposes is really rather wonderful, IMO, and, I think, very much in line with Tom's vision.

I should also add, we're not the only ones that do it.

And there is a similar thing with the London people here. It manifests in a slightly different way, but it's there. Maybe it's easier to see as somebody who's never been involved with any of the IRL groupings here, I dunno.

Yeah, what Boboss said, really.

There is, I suppose, a 'Brighton Posse', if this is taken to signify a set of people to which Haus is referring to with his 'Old Home Week' sketches. This does happen. I'm sure it's annoying and I'm sure I've participated in it at times.

One point that's already been made is that this group of posters is not unique in that respect. Other groups of posters/friends have pursued in-jokes/narratives from off-board interaction on general Barbie-space.

Are the BP (whoever they/we) are more noticeable than over groups?

The 'BP' overlaps with a broader category of 'Barbies who live in Brighton'(or have done) but is in no way the same thing.

Much as there can be said to be a 'London Barbelith set' but I'm sure that there are also Barbies who live in London who aren't in that 'set'.

Some of the people being referred to as 'Brighton Posse' have never lived here, AFAIK; it's a social/cultural grouping.

Then these overlap but are again also distinct from the specific group of posters in that Temple thread(if that is the source of the irration, which as yet is unclear ), many of whom are not 'Brighton Posse', and some of whom do not, as yet, live in Brighton.

I have been assumed to be bang in the middle of the 'Brighton Posse' at times, at other times it's been assumed that I'm distinct from and aggrieved by them.

Neither is entirely accurate. As it isn't really for other people. People's positions are generally more complex/contradictory than that.

for eg: Barbelith has many functions for me, and one of them is to provide an environment for easy chat/communication with existing friends who I don't see enough of.

I've known the Brighton and London 'sets' for about the same amount of time, and over the years have sometimes been spending more social time time in Ldn than Btn or vice-versa* Barbelith has provided a stable medium of interaction with these people, and I appreciate that.

(small aside, if people could not discuss me as an example in conversations that I've not yet involved myself in, I'd appreciate it. I realise thus far the info about me has been very limited/referring only to things which I've been reasonably public about, but this is to head off anything further.

I'm not keen to have people discussing the circs of my real life in any kind of detail on Barbelith, especially without my knowledge/explicit consent. Ta.

Also, to describe me as 'female' is reasonably accurate, but the terms of that discussion are ones I'd have to write an essay-sized post to quantify my relationship to. I'm not entirely happy with simple terms which I feel don't entirely represent me being used by other people about me.

Sorry if I sound overly touchy about this. Am a bit twitchy about being 'talked about' and may be overreacting.)

* This is because I have a fabulous BriLon lifestyle. I have heard people use this term in all seriousness. Can we sort out our differences by banding together and pummelling them?
