Yeah, what Boboss said, really.
There is, I suppose, a 'Brighton Posse', if this is taken to signify a set of people to which Haus is referring to with his 'Old Home Week' sketches. This does happen. I'm sure it's annoying and I'm sure I've participated in it at times.
One point that's already been made is that this group of posters is not unique in that respect. Other groups of posters/friends have pursued in-jokes/narratives from off-board interaction on general Barbie-space.
Are the BP (whoever they/we) are more noticeable than over groups?
The 'BP' overlaps with a broader category of 'Barbies who live in Brighton'(or have done) but is in no way the same thing.
Much as there can be said to be a 'London Barbelith set' but I'm sure that there are also Barbies who live in London who aren't in that 'set'.
Some of the people being referred to as 'Brighton Posse' have never lived here, AFAIK; it's a social/cultural grouping.
Then these overlap but are again also distinct from the specific group of posters in that Temple thread(if that is the source of the irration, which as yet is unclear ), many of whom are not 'Brighton Posse', and some of whom do not, as yet, live in Brighton.
I have been assumed to be bang in the middle of the 'Brighton Posse' at times, at other times it's been assumed that I'm distinct from and aggrieved by them.
Neither is entirely accurate. As it isn't really for other people. People's positions are generally more complex/contradictory than that.
for eg: Barbelith has many functions for me, and one of them is to provide an environment for easy chat/communication with existing friends who I don't see enough of.
I've known the Brighton and London 'sets' for about the same amount of time, and over the years have sometimes been spending more social time time in Ldn than Btn or vice-versa* Barbelith has provided a stable medium of interaction with these people, and I appreciate that.
(small aside, if people could not discuss me as an example in conversations that I've not yet involved myself in, I'd appreciate it. I realise thus far the info about me has been very limited/referring only to things which I've been reasonably public about, but this is to head off anything further.
I'm not keen to have people discussing the circs of my real life in any kind of detail on Barbelith, especially without my knowledge/explicit consent. Ta.
Also, to describe me as 'female' is reasonably accurate, but the terms of that discussion are ones I'd have to write an essay-sized post to quantify my relationship to. I'm not entirely happy with simple terms which I feel don't entirely represent me being used by other people about me.
Sorry if I sound overly touchy about this. Am a bit twitchy about being 'talked about' and may be overreacting.)
* This is because I have a fabulous BriLon lifestyle. I have heard people use this term in all seriousness. Can we sort out our differences by banding together and pummelling them? |
