At the present time, I'm moderately livid at the tendency of some to reduce any discussion of on-board misogyny to a simple case of Boys vs Girls - with any comment by a male-identifying poster which isn't unequivocal hang-'em-high condemnation being viewed as mealy-mouthed "justification" of said misogyny.

I´ve stopped reading those threads weeks ago, and only have looked into them sporadically. My life experience is so different from what is said in these threads, that I´m afraid I´ll only step on someone´s toes. And that would result in me having to justify myself over several posts with several users, because I might have used a term, that somehow causes irritation, or in some other way have said something, that someone doesn´t agree with. And in the end only an apology (for voicing my view) would suffice.

So I keep to threads where I can assume, people don´t see it as an attack when a different view is voiced.

I'm annoyed at Barbelith in general for keeping me up until 8am when I have to go to work at 3pm.

The lack of an image upload facility. My inability to edit my own posts properly. The lack of a 'preview edit' option.

Lack of preview editing is annoying. I just start a new post and preview it from there and then copy and paste, a bit roundabout but it works.

The problem with the Instead Thread is that I often don't know which threads are being intentionally knocked down the list, and I'm frequently left thinking the person doing the knocking is a berk when a half decent or in no way obviously annoying thread suffers because of it.

i think sometimes it gets used as a show and tell thread.

Oh, I didn't find the thread annoying, and debatably, yes, I am a berk. It was kind of show and tell but also because mirror's thread reminded me of the gif image. It goes in line with my thinking on the subject, if someone says something racist call them on it immediately, or start up a casual conversation on racism and how prevalent/disgusting it is. It couldn't be construed as an answer to mirror's question however and would, indeed, have been a too light/not grave enough response to it. Thusly I posted it in the instead thread. Sometimes I see the instead thread as an abstract and vague compendium of commentary on topical Barbelith, it isn't always such, I realise, just sometimes.

Spaniel

But it isn't a commentary on Barbelith, at least not in the sense you're suggesting it is or could be. It's intended to indiscriminately kick other threads down the list and that's pretty much all it does.
I should also add that that gif did nothing to make your thinking on the subject of Mirror's thread explicit.

Sorry, shouldn't have said "is a berk", that's a bit harsh. "Is being a berk" would be a much fairer and more accurate way of putting it.

All fair points Boboss, will take it into future consideration. No problems on the berk comment it really doesn't phase, but thanks for partial retraction in anycase.

Possibly, but I don't know - it's not quotable, after all. I just mean it's only averagely annoying.

Oh, I agree. I don't think it especially barbequote or barbannoy, so much as this thing that was written one time on Barbelith. However, Trips mmv, as they say.

It's bothering me that I have no clue as to the level of personal disclosure that's appropriate here, and I have a funny feeling that that's because there's a sliding scale based on all sorts of IRL factoids -- saying X is okay if you're Y but not if you're Z.

At some point it becomes much, much easier to say, "Screw personal disclosure, I need not reveal anything!" than to keep trying to figure out the damn rules.

Cat Chant
07:17 / 26.04.06
I think it's more about RL relationships than factoids, Celane: I know various people have suggested that the sliding scale is related to 'how many people on the board have slept with you/drink with you regularly/know your mum'. Like you say, it's different for everyone, so you can't figure out 'the rules', because there are like five thousand different sets.

I can see where that would get annoying, though.

Ooh, Celane, dunno if you saw it at the time, but I started a thread about your dilemma a few months ago, and I kinda regret not pursuing it more vigorously. I was working towards a case that the solution isn't to decide not to reveal anything, but to reveal everything. I'd be interested to read more about your take on it (and others'), if you fancy giving it a bump. Living Publicly.

Isn't the Comics forum great at the moment, eh folks?

Isadore

That could well be it, Deva; not knowing anyone on the board IRL, there's a certain amount of 'will never be' to all this.

It's almost 4am, all my lights were off and I was about to go to sleep, but then I clicked on Spyder's thread in the lab about light wavelengths and ghosts and the sciency stuff spliced with gohost stuff gave me the fucking creeps, and I had to turn on my living room light because I was scared of the mirror in the dark. Damn you Spyder!

(cool thread though, I'll probably like it better in daytime)

Agreed. Put your magic number right in your username instead, cos the "JoeBlow23" thing hasn't been done to death.

Nope. Not at all.

Okay, so I'm a bit annoyed. Now, it's not exactly anyone's fault, but I'm beginning to find all the Matts a bit confusing. Would any of you guys consider, like, not actually having "Matt" in your screen name?

Not all of us have got Haus's special memory powers, you know.

One's a shepard and one loves a Gilmore. Is it that hard?

Spaniel
12:58 / 18.05.06
I count three so far.

No it's not that hard, but it might be if I were to spend a few weeks away from the board and I come back to find you're all still called "Matt" but you've changed the other elements of your screen names.

Hey, no big deal. Do what you like - free world and all that.

You must realise, Boboss, by drawing attention to this, you risk precipitating a replay the Night of a Thousand Fluxes. Christ, if I wasn’t already using my screen name to annoy somebody, I’d probably be Matt Weaving right about now.
