I'm pissed off today because the Snakes On A Plane thread is not receiving nearly as many posts as it should. It should be the top thread every single day.

I don't like "huggles", "joycore" (not seen so much these days), twee whimsy about little animals (and I like little animals, so it has to be really twee whimsy to start pissing me off), the idea that "badgers" constitutes an in-joke, "fennecs" (? missed the explanation and/or humour there) "pirates vs ninjas" sounds like some viral joke that was funny for a week in 1996, "ass-candling", "squee" (may not be common here but just for good measure) "dogpiling", "teh" (approx as dated a joke as "all your base..."). "!!!!111!!!" is still just passable in my opinion, though "kthxbye" is wearing thin from overuse.

I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but I wanted to get this off my chest at some point, and this seems to be the right place. It's frustrating to me that the memes and in-jokes Barbelith seems to cherish are so (i) flatly unfunny (ii) toe-curlingly cutesy (iii) stale.

For a community that's justifiably proud of its intelligence and progressiveness in many respects, this seems a shame: it's like buying a designer bed and covering it with cheap stuffed toys.

NB. I'm not trying to present myself as an absolute, objective judge of what phrases are past their sell-by date. It's just a personal rant and a vent.

I'm annoyed by people not seeming to know what The Conversation's about since it has always seemed pretty simple to me. Read the wiki. If something has changed, please send me the memo.

And I'm annoyed at thread-locking becoming a weekly event rather a once-in-a-Blue-Moon event. Desperate Math is a silly boy. He's not David Irving, FFS.

Go to Policy, xoc. I agree completely, but register discontent there in one, or all, of the many threads around the subject. I'd like more non-moderators to make themselves heard there, in any case.

Thank fuck for that! I was starting to think I was, what with all the jackboots. I've got much better hair then him I'll have you know. And he can't do a moon walk. Or the robot. Or the Drebin. So Math beats Irving hands down. Now put that in your pipe and smoke it the Swiss!

Having to waste my time responding to it aswell, when I have better things to do, like getting some sleep, which is infinitely more interesting.

yeah fireman, you really fucking need to get off your high horse on this one.

in one page you've gone from not having read the book to telling people what 'alan' probably finds annoying about the movie, based on the potential gayness of trying to protect your clothes from hot frying oil. Bell!

Haha, you guys are funny today.....this is all overblown, because I know what I originally meant, and I'll explain.

Posters who are committed to defending lazy, stupid ideas and their expression - such as you, Alchymia!

You're talking about Felix's idea, so you'll have to talk to him about that. I defended what I thought he could've meant.

Someone throwing a hissy fit cos they were called on their ignorance.

Not the ignorance you're trying to make out that I have I don't think. Maybe ignorance of how quickly I responded and how I failed to add that I would've said camp instead of gay, yep. If you want to mean that, then I can agree. As for hissy fit : if you want to call it that, fine. I really didn't want to see the thread rotted again though, because I've seen threads get rotted quite a bit while I've been here, and was trying to avoid a debate that could've ended up with Felix being painted as something that I didn't think he was. If he's the same Felix that I think he is, I've seen him post in the temple before and he seems like a decent guy, so I defended him because I thought his comment had been taken in the wrong way.

yeah fireman, you really fucking need to get off your high horse on this one.

hah, sometimes one post can be so misunderstood. I'm not on a high horse and wasn't. I was probably on a high horse when I first arrived here a couple/few years back, but that's maybe because I was deluded to hell back then.

in one page you've gone from not having read the book to telling people what 'alan' probably finds annoying about the movie, based on the potential gayness of trying to protect your clothes from hot frying oil. Bell!

Ok, look at this part : 'in one page you've gone from not having read the book to telling people what 'alan' probably finds annoying about the movie,'

No, I said both times that 'I imagined', not what he probably found. Please go back and check if you think I'm wrong here.

Finally, gayness of protecting clothes from hot frying oil : I didn't think that he would've been bothered about wearing an apron to make egg on toast, and didn't think it fit. I've explained this in the V for Vendetta thread anyway, and with this post aswell, things should be a lot clearer now.

I like that apron even less now, a lot less.

The old "but you know I'm not Xist therefore that can't have been a Xist comment therefore YOUR AL OVEREACTING!!1" argument.

I hope you're prepared for the fact that you could be wrong about me here, because it's going to be useless arguing anything with you guys if you've just decided to judge me. Ganesh, you've just decided that it's some fake argument, or style of defending, or lying then?

The old "[insert type] argument." I can't believe you'd do that when I really thought that I'd explained this properly, but no, you think that I'm covering something up. I'll take this into policy and help because this has gone a bit too far here. This is actually the first time that I've felt that I've had to take something in there aswell, but whatever. Who gives a fuck right? I've been teh labelled!111, and that's all that matters.

I've been labelled, and if some of you carry on labelling me, then I'll feel free to label you aswell, because like it or not, some of you have gone too far. You should probably be looking in the mirror when it comes to ignorance sometimes, because if you're not prepared to admit that you are, then we already have some of the reasons why this site has problems with things like this. We are all ignorant of certain things, and if some of us can't admit that, then the problem is pretty fucking big!

I thought that this was just me getting the usual shit, which I can often handle, but I think that this is something bigger here and probably quite a bit more serious if some of you still don't understand why this site, and some of the people here, have problems with situations like this.

I'll take this into a thread there shortly anyway, and I'll go into it prepared for the fact that I could actually be wrong, so I hope that you can do the same.

I dont think the idea was stupid, but yes I did manage to express it quite bad, I think we can all agree on that, however I was a bit surprised that only one person seemed intelligent enough to get the geist of what I wanted to discuss...

What also got to me was the way the threadrot kept going. Even though I tried to explain myself in several posts, it seemed like some people found pinpointing the "g-word" and racking down on that was so much more fun and productive than discussing the actual content, which was how much the original character differed from the moviecharacter, something I in my naivite thought would be a far mor interesting topic.

I was annoyed from the start about how the writers of the script seemed to feel that there was no way to portray a character enjoying more aestethic values such as art, poetry and classical music without making him into a stereotypical camp character.

If he had been listening to jazz and talking a lot about voodo and the writers had decided to make him talk and act like someone from pimp my ride in the movie I would likewise have thought that it would have been uncalled to turn him into a stereotypical "afroamerican" character, or maybe afrobrittish

As for the latter stupid comment about batman...yes I would have reacted if Bruce Wayne had been acted like robin williams lover in Birdcage, not because I think homosexuality is a horrible sin, but simply because it wouldn't have made much sense at all...

Well, if anyone wants to chat about how and why they felt the need to alter the character so much in the V movie just stop by in the moviethread.

no, it is not, but it becomes it when I clarified what I intended to say as soon as I noticed I had been misunderstood, and it still went on for two more pages after that.

anyway, I just spent some time in the cute animal thread so I am not all that annoyed at anyone anymore.

It's worth remembering that what may appear clear to you is not necessarily so to other people. So if they ask for more clarity, and you offer it, and then they ask again, it would seem that the clarity for them has not yet arisen. People come to a message board at different times and for different reasons so you'll always get some discussions going on some time while everyone who's interested chips in. I can't see a great deal wrong with debating a couple of points for a couple of pages (it was substantially less than that), and to be honest we could have gone on a lot longer.
