Let's try again. DM, you are frankly not interested enough in what other people say to come to meaningful conclusions about what is going on in a thread. Instead, you will defecate in your hand and hurl it at those who, regrettably, have to try to deal with the threadrot that your lack of interest in anything much except talking about yourself engenders. That means you'll back somebody who, like you, is utterly self-absorbed and not really interested in contributing value to an argument over somebody who has to try to rein them in every time. See here. You have no interest in actually thinking about the details of the subject under discussion, you just want to seek attention and pump your ego.

This is not a fatal condition. You have the option of paying attention to what people are saying and giving actual thought to what value you can add to a thread beyond your indubitably marvellous presence. However, the journey of a million miles starts with a single step. That step involves showing the board and its members a bit of basic respect.

Ok, Haus. Nice and slow now

I wasn't supporting Shadowsax in that thread. in fact, I was pleading him to back of a bit. Yes, I was on your side on that one. But you only read what you wanted to read, y'know. Perhaps it's my fault, I may have been not clear enough.

Yes, I did post thing to pump my own ego at times (the PC thread was my worst moment, I admit), but I'm trying not to now. Are you? But I do read a lot more than I post, and I do change my mind when I come across something new and intelligent. Do you?

And then, right after I post something urging people not to let personal hostilities take the best of us, you go about doing just that, starting atacking me for no reason (re-read your last post, please).

You say I want to pump my own ego (which is not entirely untrue, I confess) but what about you? You seem uncapable of leting something go. You just need to have the last word, don't you? Where is your basic respect for me?

And look at that now. You made me do it again. Let's stop this and be friends, is all I'm saying, dude. We don't need to be like that

Far be it from me to put words in Haus's mouth, but I think his complaint was that regardless of what you were trying to do, your posts in that thread were next to useless. Unless you count attention-getting, which, while you get points for copping to, still doesn't help progress ideas in any thread.

I'm personally a bit tired of people spending pages and pages of a thread trying to put other barbenauts down, instead of actually discussing the subject at hand. It has a snowball efect and seldom lead to anywhere useful.

Well, see, maybe you aren't discussing the subject at hand very well at all in several threads, which might be why some folks find these words coming from you a little...I dunno...silly, I guess.

Btw, I like you lots, but those smileys gotta go, man.

DM, I will be not only your friend but your girlfriend if you read and attempt to apply this. Seriously. Not only does it improve everyone else's experience, it also makes it more likely that you'll get something profitable out of your interaction with the board.

Listen to your friend Billy Zane. He's trying to help you. He's a cool guy.

I post all those new redesigns of classic DC characters and pretty much make it clear in that thread that I am not DC exclusive, and I have heard nothing from Joey Q about possible work at Marvel. Or Jim Shooter. Or even comic author Rob Liefeld. I feel I may be being blacklisted.

Great. I feel like Mark Gruenwald who would never leave Marvel, so when he wanted to do Justice League comics he had to invent the Squadron Supreme.

Yeah, I know. You're absolutely right on that one. I'm trying not to do that anymore, too, but old habits are hard to quit. In my mind, it's not much attention-getting (self-dilusion, perchance?) as it is "making small-talk", but I guess it's not Barbelith purpose and people dislike it...

Gee, I like the smileys. Anybody else feel bad about them?

The overarching theme of the criticisms against you has been the uselessness of your posts. If you feel your statements need a smiley, ask yourself why. Is it because you feel you may be misunderstood, and require the "happy" disclaimer that a smiley provides? If that is the case, rewrite your post such that you feel there may be no misunderstanding.

Dead Megatron

I guess I put them to guve the post some sort of "personality". And to separate "serious posting" and "humorous posting", but the latter kind does not seem to be very well accepted in the forum (unless the thread is specifically humorous), so I'm trying to avoiding them now. I used to smiley in my "aforepost" to reiterate the fact I'm not here to pick fights or to troll, not by a long shot.

While I Barbecrush Mr. Fear for his response to Flyboy's request, and have followed the three STMTCG threads all weekend, I can't engage either. I've not read Capote, nor seen Breakfast at Tiffany's, nor familiar with Morrisey's work, nor heard any versions Moon River, save the m4a provided.

Well, I've linked to loads of Wikipedia as well as a collection of around 200 versions of Moon River. And, later in the thread, to Hepburn's screen version.

I did try to provide the background. It's not strictly necessary, though: listen to the song and tell us how it makes you feel.

I did try to provide the background.

It was the speed and depth of the analysis. Whoosh. I was more annoyed with myself than at Ganesh, Fear, and GGM. Times like that remind what size dog I am, and how fast I actually cannot run.

Gee, I like the smileys. Anybody else feel bad about them?

As you asked, I dislike them, and I'll try to explain why.

They're not so bad in the Conversation (although I still think you have to be careful to consider context and not overuse them) but they really jar in serious discussions. In the same way, if I was talking to a friend on MSN, I might use smileys if we're talking casually, but not about anything important. What you're doing at the moment is the equivalent of doing the dead parrot sketch in the middle of a political meeting.

On top of that, from what you've said, I don't think that they serve the purpose you want them to.

The only way to give 'personality' to a post is through the content of that post (unless you're trying to give it the personality of the kind of person who spells 'mad' with 3 a's, which I suspect isn't the case). There are no shortcuts.

If you need a smiley to illustrate that a post is "humorous", then it probably isn't very.

Even more so, if you think that if you might look like you're trolling without a smiley, then I'd gently suggest you may need to look at how you're wording things, rather then using smileys.

Aww, thanks Haus.

ShadowSax just does not want to think about anything. I have to admit, his position isn't illogical. I can see his point. It's just too bad he persists in being completely uncool.

I think Shadowsax isn`t that mysogenous, because, frankly, it is so exagerated it's even a bit ridiculous. I think he just enjoys this quasi-trolling strife, the "devil's advocate" role. He probably finds amusing to see how easily-provoked people can be. I know it because it's a tendence I have to fight within myself, as some of you may have noticed. Talking thus from personnal experience, the best way to make him stop is to flat out ignore him, but I don't know if that works within Barbelith ethics...

My tactic was to out-Haus him (i.e. be calm like pond, be reasonable like pro bono attorney, be passive-aggressive like ex-girlfriend)

Trying not to tie this too tightly to Shadowsax, who may well change, but it's just another case of someone with lots of feelings but not very much thought coming to Barbelith from the raw experience of their own life, as opposed to academia or study. It's all about Teh Message which is So Important that all this bullshit about being civil and reasonable can just be forgotten about.

Except, well, it can't; the medium and message, though they can be thought of as separate objects, are pretty much inextricable. Calling someone a fucking wifestealer, just to pick an example from thin air, is a wholly different social event to working out your evidence and calmly approaching the person involved.

Another irritating aspect of this has been the "Let's not take this too seriously" approach, when tried on in serious fora. Again, this isn't directly a Shadowsax thing; it's something that can happen on here with other posters, and in real life conversations as well. The idea that some things are "too serious" or that we should always break into humour now and then because this is "healthy", generally translates as "I don't want to adress this". An irritating quirk of human nature, which I imagine we've all been guilty of.

Can you beleive I'm writing this 3/4 drunk?
