i got a look at the upcoming prelude to DC's next big crossover event.

THEY FUCKING KILL BLUE BEETLE!!!!!!!

DIRTY FUCKERS!

I'm not a hardcore superhero fan, but I enjoy all kinds of comics, including Marvel and DC. I have a soft spot for 3rd rate heroes, Blue Beetle being one of my favorites.
I don't have a REAL problem with this, but still......it's a bit of a downer.

So what's the basic storyline of this Infinite Crisis event which, it would seem foolish for them to run while we've got Grant's Seven Soldiers event ongoing, even if Morrison is not using any big names in it.

it's a bit of a downer.

Ok, but did you find it to be actually really quite good? Did you tear up? And started to cry TWICE? Although you can't remember the last time you cried at a comic? Do the writers clearly love the DCU? And put a lot of thought and grace into a very intelligent comic book? Is the art fab, although Rags' Morales' style might not be to everyone's taste?

Do the writers ask the questions and come up with the ideas that no one's thought of before? And do they genuinely move you without button-pushing manipulation? Does the death matter and do you see why? Are the writers very clever and pack a lot of story into this first issue? And finally: is this book HIGHLY RECOMMENDED?

There doesn't appear to be one, yet. This one-shot leads into 4 minis, each with their own focus.

1. OMAC is about a mysterious satellite gathering data about heroes.
2. Villains United is about the villains of the DCU becoming united, partially due to a mysterious female named "Mockingbird"
3. The Rann/Thanagar war is about, well, the Rann/Thanagar War, which was instigated by a mysterious alien being who once had great cosmic power.
4. And Day on Vengeance is about the Spectre going nuts and trying to wipe out all magic.

I've been theorizing that this is somehow linked to the original Crisis, as the first three minis remind me of the Monitor, Harbinger, and Anti-Monitor respectively. I'm hoping that this is an "it's always darkest..." situation.

Secret Six tie-in, maybe?

In the promo art for this, I only recognized Deathstroke and Black Adam. Anyone know who the others are?

4. And Day on Vengeance is about the Spectre going nuts and trying to wipe out all magic.

As this apparently features Detective Chimp, and is written by Bill Willingham, I'm leaning toward getting this one.

But what is the actual PLOT of the Infinite Crisis book? What precipitates the "Crisis" in this case? We know about Blue Beetle's death, we know it sucks (why do they keep killing off 3rd-tier JLI characters?!?)... what ELSE happens in the book? Spoil away!

Bill Willingham's writing kinda sucks, though, in my experience. (although I loved his ELEMENTALS series back with Comico Comics in the 80s, which he also drew) Although a miniseries with Ragman playing a starring role, along with Detective Chimp, is a fun idea.

I said i "had a look" at the book.
I have not had a chance to sit down and read it, but a friend of mine did and liked it a lot. I will probably buy it when it officially comes out and read it then.
But I did flip through it, Beetle seems to be the main character in the book, and he gets killed in the end.

Poor Booster Gold, poor poor Booster Gold.

I think it depends a lot on the timing. In the case of BB, there had been (and indeed IS) recent work reminding folks of his heyday in the JLI, which kicked the nostalgia into overdrive.

Lex Luthor, Doctor Psycho, the Calculator, and Talia Al Ghul (although these days she uses a more serpentine alias).

Perhaps the tagline could be something like... "DC: If you liked us when we raped and killed Sue Dibney, then you'll postively adore us when we murder Blue Beetle! And coming in 2006: Super Crisis: The Needlessly Long Slow Vivisection of Oberon!"

boy, does Randy Lander HATE this book!

and the Don MacPherson, the other reviewer at The Fourth Rail, who in my opinion is usually far too easy to please, gives it a 7 out of 10, but says "Readers who didn't enjoy Identity Crisis would be well advised to steer clear of this one-shot, as it boasts a similar tone."

And: "Despite the reference to a coming "Infinite Crisis" on the cover and in the story's title, the plot here isn't at all cosmic in tone."

Aren't there ANY ideas to attract readers other than killing people? Making Luthor president was different and changed the mythology of the character. No Man's Land was innovative and interesting. Seems like there's more to do than death.

I could be missing some special writing knowledge, but it seems easy to me to pick the Kill Somebody concept when trying "shock" the audience.

And why is shocking the audience the only goal these days? How about inspiring or scaring or moving or thrilling the audience?

I never thought I'd get tired of cape books like all the smart people already have, but this era of comics is reminding me of the late 80's when I stopped buying for a few years.

It seems like there are places to go with these characters that heaven't been done yet. Why do the same thing over and over again? Within a couple of months. At the same publisher ...

I always thought Lander was the easier one to please... his scores tend to be higher than MacPherson's. Lander's more of a fanboy than MacPherson.

And there's always the chance that Blue Beetle will end up being the "new" OMAC. That is, if OMAC is the same general thing as Kirby's creation. Maybe there'll be more than one. Multiple One Many Army Corps?

It seems like, from comments DiDio, Rucka et. al. have made, this whole arc they're doing, from IC to Countdown to the eventual Crisis 2, is going to be about trust among the superheroes - in IC the trust is violated (the mindwipes of Batman and Dr. Light, the heroes getting too dark and Machiavellian), and then they go through a whole big thing where they have at each other over it and the ripple effects are examined, and then in the final act they'll all forgive each other (even though deep down the relationships will never be the same since the trust has been violated) and vow to be nicer from now on, entering a new era of real heroic standards, trust and cooperation.

Silly, I know, but that seems to be where they're going with all this.

I say screw all this raping and murder and 'trust violated among the superheroes' shit and let's get on to the cosmic, reality-bending Crisis 2! I really want Crisis 2 to be old-school, well-executed fun epic superheroing, with a new flair. The kind of "New Silver Age" optimism and energy that Waid, Busiek and Johns (and outside the regular DCU, Moore and Morrison, with ABC and Seaguy, respectively, and now Morrison with Seven Soliders in the DCU proper and with the upcoming Superman All-Stars) have ushered in. Maybe I'm bound to be disappointed...

I've been on the "New Silver Age" bandwagon from the beginning, but it's not really going anywhere, aside from the excellent works of a select few. Imagination and inspiration, that's the key... I haven't seen mainstream comics do that in a long time, generally speaking.

Idle BS'ing follows....

CRISIS 2 should be the Psycho-Pirate leading an uprising of DCU characters against a spectral, omnipotent race called 'The Creators'* in an attempt to reassert control over their own destinies.

And to put an end to the raping, head-shooting, and brain-footprinting. In HYPER-TIME!

About the OMAC thing, I've been reading the Azz/Lee Superman, which is - remember - set a year ahead of the other books featuring the blue chap.

Anyway, [SPOILERS] the priest there is set to become OMAC IV, and one would imagine Equus (the Three-Willie Seth looking guy on seeral covers) is III, given that numeral is on his chest.

Just fyi. Kord could well be mk.V though.

Just read this. Certainly not as nauseating as Identity Crisis turned out to be. It's much more like DC's take on Avengers Disassembled. All manner of shit hitting the fan at the same time.

You'll be happy to know that everyone keeps their pants on this book. I quite enjoyed a nearly full page spread of Doc Light bitching about revenge to Luthor's gang of villains. "Come on! Can't a Rogue assrape with impunity?!?" He's completely the fucking Monarch from The Venture Brothers, as far as how the dialogue sounds in my head.

And Blue Beetle's fate was rough, but not as gratuitous as nearly every page of issues 2-7 of Identity Crisis.

All in all, a decent book. It's definitely got the feel of all those hulking crossovers of the back in the days, but I've somehow managed to convince my brain that it's got the potential to be better.

It won't be, but when it all sifts out, I'll be about $50-$75 the poorer. Everyone wins!
