Damn these newspapers and their insistence on giving good reviews to bands which I missed, usually because I was AT WORK READING SODDING PAPERS!!!

Tonight's was Killing Joke. Sounds like I missed a fucking awesome gig. Bum.

Looking back at all these number ones makes me realise how the most influential people in pop music seldom seem to have number one hits. Beatles excepted, obviously.

Having said that, guy who used to work here, Allan? Ashes To Ashes by David Bowie. Lucky ... young ... git.

HOLY FUCK!!!

I just double-checked my birthday no 1, and fuck me if it isn't Everything I (fucking!) Own still! What the - !?

Aww I'm really embarrassed now. I could have sworn it was Come Up And See Me ... and the US one is bloody Olivia Newton-John. Oh well, at least I have the grim satisfaction of my earlier point about number one hits being proved.

GGM, can I have a solidarity-charged hug? Or have you passed out?

Brigade du jour
23:20 / 27.02.05
Look at page 6 Keggers, link to a site that tells you what was number one in UK and US on the day you were born (assuming you were born after 1952 of course).

I took a photograph of a snargleworthy once. Unfortunately he lashed out with his mighty mjlnr and smashed my camera. The bastard.

Oh I shouldn't be so intolerant, I know, but he did run off with my finest footlebum.

Saint Keggers

I hate to be the one to say this, but the ThisDayInMusic site is talking out of its digital arse. As far as my birthday's concerned, anyway.

It's telling me that the UK #1 on my birthday was Everything I Own. For a change. The US was grooving along to the funky sounds of Information is not available by Try Again.

'Taint the case. Memory and the Official UK Charts site tell me that it was Art Garfunkel warbling I Only Have Eyes For You. Disappointingly, a week either side and I'd have had Space Oddity or David Essex w/ Hold Me Close, both of which would probably have been preferable. I say this having previously admitted my liking of mid-70s Essex to the board - I stand firm in the face of your mockery, mockers. I'm sure that the Garfunkel is fine and dandy, and it must be said that he made a very good potential necrophiliac in that old Nic Roeg film, which gains him points, but still...

See, now Spatula's site is telling me Steve Harley again! Oh now I'm so confused I'm off to do some work.

Later, dudes.

Okay, how long was "Everything I Own" by Ken Boothe on top of the charts in Britain? I've done a string of my friends' birthdates and it keeps coming up over a span of about four years...

01:12 / 28.02.05
hey all. "Ballad of the Green Berets," speaking. . . US. The UK one is the Walker brothers, "Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" (can't quite hear that one--can someone hum a few bars for me?) I'm bummed because I missed it's being "These Boots Are Made for Walking" by like a week!

(There, Stoat, now you can feel young...)

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK
01:13 / 28.02.05
And exactly how do you get a number one single with a name like Ken anyway?

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK
01:14 / 28.02.05
Ah, "Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" fucking RULES.

I should be grading, once again, [whine] but I just can't.[/whine]

GRADE, woman, GRADE!!!

There. You can't say we didn't try.

What was the other Walker Brother called, anyway? The one that wasn't Scott? I'm betting it wasn't Ken.

alas
01:34 / 28.02.05
Gary, i think. But apparently there were three (or even 4?) of them, and the weren't really brothers and none of them was really named Walker. But, well, there you have it. The lyrics to "Sun Ain't Gonna Shine" look good--apparently they had little success back here in the US, but they faked a kind of British invasion look that was popular back in Britain, one site told me. Which is weird, a kind of fake self-re-invasion . . . like an ingrown hair or something.

ok it's now late enough I can go to bed with impunity. ... (Have you ever slept with Impunity?)
