Why is it that every time I log in here lately at around 11 pm EST, there's something weird going on? Isn't it like 5 a.m. your time? Is that like A FULL MOON EVERY NIGHT???

On the Burning Down The Haus thread - I acknowledge that there are problems with it being in the Policy, but there might be more problems with it being in the Conversation. The two main ones being:

a) It seems that while it's in the Conversation, it's even more likely to attract posts from people who want to make wildly disproportionate, unsupported, accusatory analogies (McCarthyism! disempowerment!).

b) If it's true that the thread contains some stuff that we probably wouldn't want as representative of how we work in the Policy, it's even more true that it contaisn stuff we probably wouldn't want as representative of the board as a whole, and I tend to think of Conversation as one of the most public areas of the board, rightly or wrongly. I include myself in this: it would perhaps be better if I ignored some of the "I reserve the right not to back up anything I say but not be called on it either" trolling, but I don't have the willpower.

I completely understand why Haus started it, in a sense - because I'd be tempted if someone said "ooh, lots of people think you're a big bully and they PM me all the time to say so!" - but I don't really know what it's achieved other than to let us know what some of us already knew: haterz be hatin'!

Unrelated to the above, Head Shop mods might should do something about this. I think I'd opt for just whacking the last post, although I'm not sure my own contribution did too much other than lead into it, and I also suspect a little guidance might go a long way here.

Shall we just move that thread to the Conversation?

I've proposed it. It will inevitably get derailed wherever it is if the thread starter keeps going the same way (which they will).

It's a browser problem, i'll stop postiing untill it's fixed.
I apologise in advance if this is a triple post.

It's probably not a browser problem- sometimes a post takes a long time to go through- if that happens try not to click again, even if you think it's frozen. What I usually do if it looks like it's frozen is copy the text, close the window and then launch Barbelith all over again- 9 times out of 10 the post's there, if not I haven't lost the text and can try again.

Don't stop posting until it's fixed, cos it probably won't be!

Don't hit refresh either while waiting for it to post, that will also cause a doppel or triple.

Could we move the CD Creation for new Beau's from Music to Conversation? while musical in nature, it seems more like a conversation thread. Would this be cool?

Although the discussion with Dragon is still in progress, can someone please change the summary for his immigration thread. At the moment, it reads:

A place to look into the idea of borders and illegals, how much is too much...or even if we should keep our borders and embrace all who want to come to the United States due to their plights.

It's the "illegals" and "plights" bit that grates me. Not sure how best to replace these words, but as it stands I figure this isn't sending out good signals to other people who might stumble across Barbelith.

Even "illegal immigrants" would be better.

Ganesh is right. How about:

A place to look into the idea of borders and illegal immigration, how much is too much...or even if we should keep our borders and embrace all who want to come to the United States.

I still don't like the "how much is too much", but that's probably down to my own take on thsi subject.

I don't really know what it's achieved other than to let us know what some of us already knew: haterz be hatin'!

Are you suggesting that filled with a burning hatred for a poster they'd never heard of or met, legions of people are signing on to Barbelith to take a dig at Haus? Or that a good number of Haus' comments have themselves been downright rude ,condescending or baiting to other posters? Not that I claim the moral high ground here; but Haus has hardly been a model of saintly toleration compared to those fiendish haters, you know.

Hey, guys, I have a great idea. Let's ignore the fact that I started an entire thread specifically to bleed off this nonsense, and turn this thread and - hey, every other thread on Barbelith, why not - into an oportunity for the recently pwn3ed to restate their grievances. If nothing else, it will be exactingly ontopic.

No, or I would have said something at all in the slightest bit like that! I made no mention of people signing up for this reason.

Or that a good number of Haus' comments have themselves been downright rude ,condescending or baiting to other posters?

The number of instances where this has not been thoroughly deserved are very rare - and outnumbered by the instances in which Haus has chosen to play the proverbial ball not the proverbial man, i.e. actually engaged with the content of posts rather than just posting, as a more intemperate person might have been tempted to do, "SHUT UP for the SAKE of GOD!" As has been briefly suggested elsewhere, it seems there are people for whom having the content of their posts taken to task on a point-by-point basis is more inflammatory than just flaming them.

Back ontopic, if we are changing the abstract, which is a somewhat significant step given that it is, although not very good English, covering the subject matter, how about:

Discussion of borders and immigration, legal and otherwise, migrant workers, refugees and asylum seekers and the cultural changes and challenges they present. How much immigration is too much, and should borders be policed?

At present, the abstract does not cover Europe, which Dragon lurches into when he wants to talk about evil Muslims rather than corrupt Mexicans, and some of the phrasing doesn't make a lot of sense.

I have to disagree, Flyboy. I don't think that many people deserve to be harshly flamed, even if they are - to your mind, to Haus' mind, to my mind, whatever - "wrong". Haus has inarguably come into conflict with a very large number of people; I believe this is because his posting style is needlessly rude and abrasive. It's not necessary to be so rude so often; if his points are justified, let them speak for themselves. I think this is what the difference comes down to: some of us believe in fighting fire with fire, some with water. I'm not by any means innocent, but I try not to subscribe to the "they deserved it!" approach, which I think is at the root of a great many disagreements and much unpleasantness here, and which, I hope, with a little more restraint, could be avoided.

Kay, you're trolling this thread. Please take it to "Burning Down the Haus 2" - or "1", if you'd rather - or even go back to your hilarious and rapidly-abandoned "The High Society" thread, where I think a numnber of people are still waiting for you to answer their questions.

Anyone want to speak out for or against changing that abstract? We have had abstracts in pretty incomprehensible English left before, often because they did hit the search terms... I'm generally a fairly happy interventionist on Titles and abstracts, but this is a fairly significant change, and it does alter the intention of the thread starter...

In regards to changing the Dragon's intent, could we put "(moderated)" after the new summary, and maybe even insert a similar tag along with the original summary in Dragon's first post? This way, there are at least clues that this summary has been changed and that there was a reason for it. (maybe even put a link to my initial post in this thread for further explanation?)

Have we done it before? I don't remember seeing any similar summaries, and it looks kinda... ugly. It also feels a bit like we're apologising for changing it, which bugs me. I'd rather we just change it, to be honest.

I know what you mean, Flyboy. But I'm looking at it from the point of view of a new reader. i.e. imagine their suprise after reading the summary and then reading Dragon's starting post.

There's nothing wrong with transparency, after all.
