I must admit that my initial reading of Alex's comment was much the same as neukoln's (sorry about that, Alex). Indeed, after reading this debate I went back and re-read the post and was surprised that Alex hadn't said what I thought he'd said; so much so, that I suspected momentarily he may have edited the post to clarify this point - I was obviously wrong, of course, as this bit of editing would have already been raised here, if it were the case. I don't know, maybe I was blinded by the general tone of Alex's post,... neukoln, are you making the same mistake?
However, aside from this misinterpretation (which is wrong), I feel that neukoln does raise a valid point about treating DM unfairly and was right to be annoyed at Alex's post; for which, of course, Alex has since adequately apologised. After all, (IMHO) DM seems like a likeable fellow and seems (despite the post which inflamed Alex) to be sincerely trying to adjust to our (erm?) Barbeculture. For some of us, it takes longer to get the feel of the place (myself included).
Therefore, may I suggest that we ALL reassess our stance on this discussion, and in future try exercise a bit more patience and common courtesy when we criticise each other's posts? If education is not a duty in our community*, patience and respectful communication certainly should be. Forgiveness is also worth remembering.
Hope I'm not making things worse.
*For the record: I'm still getting to grips with the "we are not obligated to educate other members" POV, so I am faaaaar from decided as to whether this is a valid viewpoint (or not). |
