I definitely know exactly what you mean, as the "Cam" pages of the Guardian were the ones that looked the least like JH's interpretation of an artist and more of a an attempt to be exactly like the artist. Personally, I think it's because you have a style that, if I may, is the least replicatable. Each of the other artists has a trademark characteristic (wash, in Bianchi's case, for example) that JH was able to replicate and then bring his own style to bear. Your work, however, doesn't have any of those hooks. It's simply your extemely unique draftsmanship. And I think JH's attempt to replicate comes off, for that reason, a little stiff (especially the close up of Carla, which had all of the surface characteristics of your line, but very little of the intangible qualities that makes your art so dynamic.) I hope this doesn't come off as a slight to the other artists involved or as a sloppy attempt at a fellating your ego. I just wanted to point out what I noticed as well, and assure you that, seriously, you're pretty fantastic at this, in ways that aren't really that easy to replicate. |
