Suedey! SHOT FOR MEAT!
18:43 / 31.10.04
I watched Star Wars on DVD all weekend. You know, I barely noticed any of the changes... there were only about three (obvious ones) that stood out to me. I never even noticed the "Greedo shoots first thing" in the special editions before I was on the internet! Well actually, I just ignored it. (I was aware of what changes there were now because of the internet, again...) It just didn't matter. None of it really stopped me enjoying them like I did when I was younger, even though the changes might be entirely unnecessary.

I feel sort of sorry for George Lucas, watching the documentary. It was certainly very interesting to see how the first film was such a mess, but started to take shape with all the other layers (effects/sound) being added to it later... I couldn't help getting the feeling that the whole thing sorta ruined/took over his life in a bad way. I mean, he's obviously not doing badly career-wise and "he" has done a lot to change film (although I can't quite work out how much is for the better, but I think that might just be because the recent SW films don't quite measure up) but he even openly admits he has become what he used to rally against... I also never knew he used to be so damn thin. It's funny that he and all the famous directors he was buddies with are now all such big bearded guys...

I don't recall reading any specific answers to this before on here -- but I was just wondering about the politics in Star Wars.

OK, so it was a republic, but then became an empire.

Why the heck are there princesses running around with the republicans? Why do all the empire types seem to be military officers -- except the odd Lord here and there (who, by Ep IV, aren't always treated with that much respect).

What's going on with that?

And for someone supposedly fighting for freedom against the fascistic Empire, isn't it a little racist of Leia to refer to a wookiee as a "walking carpet"?

All better be revealed in Ep II. 'sall I'm sayin'.

I'd imagine princess was mainly a ceremonial title, while the actual decisions on Alderran were made by the Senate, or some kind of democratic government on the planet.

Wasn't it like an interglactic (planet-ary!) republic? So each star system was represented in a democratic entity governing the whole universe, but within each star system they were responsible for their own government. Or something. And Queen Amidala was elected wasn't she? And for a limited term. If only King Tony had the same restrictions.

As for the Empire, I figured it was pretty much a military dictatorship so all the positions of power were filled by the military, at least until they failed Lord Vader ... for the last time ...

That Vader gets through his admirals. I liked the little touches in the old films (the bar cheering when the band struck up another song as though it was an old favourite has always made me smile) and have a real thing for all the z-part Empire soilders, they just make the films for me - "you rebel scum" being just about my favourite "talking supporting artist" ever.

well at the start if epoisode 4 there is still an empirial senate... which is dispanded - I'm minded to think of that as being akin to Cromwell's attitude to parliament and the commonwealth...

Not really a "mythology" question, but I just checked out that SuperShadow site thing today. Is it a parody of a Star Wars news site or some guy messing with the fans via the internet? It's all pretty funny, whatever it is. I like the constant "Good idea. I'll forward it to Lucas!"

And hey! Check out his girlfriend!
