WATCH OUT FOR SPOILERS, then!!!

Seriously, here they come....

from Blue Tights.net:

-----

The King has returned. This morning in Hall H at the Comic Con International, Bryan Singer answered a ton of questions about Superman Returns. The biggest news, however was the footage he brought with him, the fans first substantial glimpse at film he and his team are crafting.

The footage starts out with a montage of Smallville that's absolutely beautiful. Then we get some shots of young Clark busting through the barn roof, and examining his baby ship. We then jump to Martha Kent and Ben Hubbard in the house staring out the window in horror, apparently looking at Clark's crashing ship. Then there's the shots of Martha approaching the ship. We cut to a shot Singer described in an the Kent Farm blog about Brandon sitting up into the frame in front of the window. We then cut to Metropolis with a lot of shots that look into the relationships between the characters.

Superman's return has prompted Perry to tell Lois to write an article about Superman, though she's very opposed to it. Richard White, her current boyfriend also is shown being a bit jealous of Lois having Superman back in her life. We got several shots of Superman and Superman with Lois, and they look absolutely FANTASTIC together. One great quote from Brandon in the clip was "That place was a graveyard. I'm the only one left." One presumes he was talking about Krypton, but we shall all see.

Near the end we got some very cool, yet brief shots of Spacey as Luthor holding a Kryptonian crystal in his hand. The big finale was an animated live shot of the storyboard picture that showed Superman hovering over the clouds, but with the added bonus of him streaking down toward the earth, creating a sonic boom on the way. It was amazing.

First impresions were that this film is going to be absolutely huge, and both strong in story and visually stunning. The whole thing had a very nostalgic feel to it, harkening back to the 30's and 40's - the Fleischer influence was very apparent, which makes me a happy SuperFan.

Fan reactions were astounding. After viewing the footage the first time, Singer got a standing ovation, and played it again. It was just as stunning.
-----------------------------------------------

Back to Finder now - other articles I read mention that Lois now has a child with her boyfriend, played by James Mardsen, and Singer said in an interview that they are not married (he joked 'I know, it's really scandalous, they have a child out of wedlock'). This plot point might be there to show that Clark/Supes is not a homewrecker - i.e. it might be more palatable that he might be breaking up a boyfriend/girlfriend as opposed to breaking up a marriage. Apparently some online fans were upset at the notion that Clar/Supes would try to break up a couple. Because clearly there's romantic tension with Clark/Supes/Lois and we're all rooting for him to get back together with Lois.

In the movie, Supes gets a cold response when he returns and the press starts writing articles about why we don't need a Superman. Lois gets pissed off about these articles, and Frank Langella as Perry White has the memorable line "Lois, three things sell papers: tragedy, sex, and Superman!"

Singer also talked about possibly using some of the old unused Marlon Brando footage - he will probably use some of it, or unused Brando dialogue from the first films, but he has to work things out with Brando's estate.

He says that Brandon Routh really is delivering as Clark/Supes - he mentioned that Routh is doing the 'goofy' Clark as did Christopher Reeve, although he added that even Clark is not the naive farmboy he once was. Most fans absolutely loved Routh's perfomance in the few scenes they saw, from several accounts/reviews of the clip I've read.

Some fans have commented on how the movie seems to be lacking a super-powered villain - all we know about is Spacey as a bald Luthor and the fact that the people of Earth are turned against Superman (they especially didn't appreciate him leaving them for a few years).

also, from comics 2 film:

>> Meanwhile, Warner exec Alan Horn told Fox News that the movie will be dedicated to the late Christopher Reeve. "We knew we had to overcome the fact that Chris Reeve was so beloved and that everyone thinks of him in the role. We're going to dedicate the new movie to him. I haven't told [director] Bryan Singer yet, but we'll put it at the beginning or the end, 'In memory of Christopher Reeve.'"

the production seems weak in their imagination and understanding on colors, design and clothes.

Is it just me, or has anyone else never had a movie spoilt by a costume department?

Films and comics, moan moan moan.

At least wait until it gets released before you go off on one.

As for the costume, Superman as always looked cheap and plasticy and kind of post-modern future too clean to me, so I think it looks fine.

looks cool, hopefully not too much Hackman as fuck, as almost everything seems to be building to only a homage to the first two movies.

to those complaining about design choices, it's clear - even Singer said so at SDCC - that they're going for a look similar to Max Fleischer cartoons' [available for download at the link]:

I'm cool with that.

from an MSN article about Singer's ComicCon appearance:

>> "I don't want to frighten anyone that there won't be the big action and spectacle; there is quite a lot of that in this film," he says. "But it is, first and foremost, a love story about these characters. It's kind of a story about when old boyfriends come home. And it plays on the notion of established relations between Superman and Lois Lane."

my only problem with that costume is that cape looks HEAVY! It's not cloth, is it? it's rubber or something? oooff.

Routh looks pretty good as Supes, but I can't help feeling he's a 1) a tad younger than I would prefer, and 2) a bit small....my ideal Superman has always been the Bruce Timm animated version. Big lantern jawed hero guy...

But Singer is fantastic, so I'm sure the movie itself is going to be great.

>> SUPERMAN RETURNS

Warner Brothers accountants are probably crying out "Great Caesar's Ghost!" according to News.com. "The revisioned Superman tale, filming at Sydney's Fox Studios, could well be the most expensive film of all time ... director Bryan Singer acknowledged its budget is approaching $326 million -- that would top 'Titanic's $250 million and 'Waterworld's $225 million."

The thing is, it's not that big a deal is it? The same fuss was made over Titanic's budget, and the same fuss will get made over the 9/11 cinematisation (or whatever) in a few years time. Films get more expensive. /Duh/.

After much talk in the entertainment press of the 'lost' scenes from Donner's Superman II, the bootleg DVD of these lost scenes (see also earlier in this thread) and repeated calls for the movie studio to make an official DVD of Donner's intended, original second Supes film, comics2film has this to report...

>> According to the Superman Homepage, director Richard Donner (who was removed from the film after having already directed most scenes) has now been hired to work on a Special Edition DVD of 'Superman II.'"

NICE!!! Fans may finally get what they've been asking for.

The Edmonton Sun has some quotes from actor Frank Langella about being Perry White. "With Bryan's blessing, my Perry White will be very different than the previous ones," said Langella. "I couldn't play a small man who barks out orders while he's chomping on his cigar. It's physically wrong for me. I play Perry as the strong, quiet type."
