Not sure about that, but only because I cannot separate Lane and lameness in my head, so I keep thinking of Mischa Barton in the role. Lois Lane is a smart-as-a-whip investigative reporter who can't recognise a guy if he takes his glasses off - you need someone who can capture that "supposed to be clever and likeable but actual clueless and annoying" schtick.

Who said Kevin Spacey as Lex?

I live to say I told you so.

Cool, Spacey would be great.

I think Mischa Barton is a totally wrong choice. For me, it would be Evangeline Lilly as the top choice or Mia Kirschner a distant second. The others just aren't right for Lois, methinks.

Also, there rumors in the industry that Amy Acker, Fred from ANGEL, is a dark horse candidate for Lois and that she had excellent chemistry in auditions with Brandon Routh.

Umm, wouldn't the character be rather unsympathetic? No one's going to root for Superman to get it together with an idiot.
No, what you need is ambiguity, a suggestion that she could have known all along, but was smart enough not to reveal it.

Wow. It'd be groovy if this turned out to be true. I think she's got the absolute perfect look, although I've never seen her act in anything but Angel (where she played a very un-Loislike character) so no idea how she'd pull it off. Charisma Carpenter I could see busting Clark's chops, though.

Otherwise, I like the look of this Mischa Barton person.

'Spretty much for this reason that I'd like her in the role, but let's not forget that she can also do a warm heart.

Imo, Amy Acke is just far too cutesy (yes I am aware that she played an all-powerful-demon-lady).

Amy Acker said at a recent Whedon event that contrary to rumors, she had not auditioned for Lois Lane (but that she'd love to).

My choices would be Evangeline Lilly or Mia Kirschner. Get rid of Mischa Barton for that role...bad idea. Charisma isn't the right look, methinks...

>> Latino Review, "rumor now has it that they’ve got their eye on one star. Albus Dumbledore himself, Michael Gambon may be our new Jor-El."

>> Speaking of rumor mongering, this just in from Superman-V.com: "Brandon Routh has signed a 3 picture deal with Warner Brothers. This will involve at least 2 Superman films with a Batman/Superman film possibly being the third."

from comics2film:
(from a recent - like 2 days ago - radio interview with Bryan Singer:

>> Bryan Singer: If you met [Brandon Routh], it would be you first inclination to say, 'Oh my goodness, if they ever make a Superman movie, he could physically do it.' And he really is quite talented. It's not an origin story. It actually puts the earlier films into -- the best way I can describe it -- a vague history. You will see a moment of flashback; you will see a bit of him as a young man. But this really takes off several years after he's arrived and he's done many heroic deeds and he's a known figure. It's kind of like the first Batman film, I guess is the best analogy. Because he already existed as Batman in Gotham City. Here, Superman has existed in Metropolis and had a relationship of a kind with Lois Lane and is now gone. And this is a story of a return."

Pre-Production?

They have a story but we haven't heard anything about a script.

As for actors, here's the lastest from Comics2Film. Sad news about Evangeline Lilly, I thought she was the best choice for Lois out of those being considered in the rumor mill...

>> According to Superman-V.com, actress Evangeline Lilly has dropped out of the running to play Lois Lane due to commitments on the hit ABC series "Lost," and the final candidates for the role include Kate Bosworth, "24" damsel in distress Elisha Cuthbert and "Stage Beauty's" Claire Danes.

>> The site also reports that Jack Larson, who played Jimmy Olsen in the George Reeves-fueled TV series, told the New York Social Diary that director Bryan Singer approached him about playing Perry White.

KATE BOSWORTH CAST AS LOIS LANE!!!

Huh.

>> Superman-V is reporting that "Kate Bosworth has won the role of Daily Planet's feisty yet incident prone reporter. After many young actresses screentested alongside Bradon Routh -- with Elisha Cuthbert, Claire Danes and Keri Russell all believed to have come close it was Bosworth who Singer decided on."

>> Meanwhile, screenwriter Dan Harris talked to the Dayton Daily News about the film. "'Superman, wait till you see it, it's going to be amazing,' Harris said. 'I wish I could tell you anything about it, but they would murder me. We're almost done with the script. We start shooting in March. Bryan Singer is directing it. It will be a back-to-basics Superman. There will be no changing of the mythology. It will be the most iconic, epic version of Superman told so far. It won't be an origin story.'"

also, Superman-V.com reports that Spacey is a done deal, as is Shaun "Iceman" Ashmore as Jimmy Olsen...

>> Kate who recently starred in Beyond The Sea now joins an impressive looking cast believed to be Shaun Ashmore as Jimmy Olsen, Spacey as Lex Luthor and Brandon Routh as Superman.

Superman-V.com even did a photoshop of the blonde Bosworth with dark brown hair. They also have a mock-up of the possible Superman costume given details that have leaked from the set...

from Newsarama and Variety:

Spacey is a lock for Luthor, officially.

>> Teasing the film a little more, Singer said that the writing team for Superman has opted to walk a line between Smallville and the original movie by Richard Donner, also strongly hinting (or even confirming) that the movie will feature Superman returning to earth after a prolonged absence.

>> Singer told Variety: "It's a little like X-Men, where the mutants existed when the movie began," Singer said. "It's not an origin story; I didn't want to remake what Richard Donner did so well in the original, and didn't want to tread on the great work they're doing on Smallville. He's already part of the culture; he has left the planet. This is the story of his return."

Spacey is a great actor and I'm not even slightly bothered by the rumours of his supposed homossexuality. much on the contrary, if that's the case.

but it's going to be a waste if Singer asks for him to do a Hackman, which seems more likely than not...

What is the Lex angle they are going to go for?

Oily super smart businessman?

Beefy foe to the big boy scout?

Jelious sociopath?

I think Spacey could be okay, but will he bald up? I think Steve Martin as Perry White is horrible.

Someone hire Kevin Pollack for something in this!

It's a well-known poorly-kept secret that Spacey is gay, even though he hasn't 'come out' in public. No biggie.

There are rumors that Brandon Routh, the newly-cast Superman, is gay, and that Bryan Singer, as a gay man who liked to use the metaphorical 'social outcasts cause they're born different' with X-Men, might play up Routh's homosexuality in the months leading up to the new Superman film's release in order to get people to see that it's not a big deal and that even universal iconic heroes can be played by gay people.

from comics 2 film:

>> Meanwhile, "Smallville" producer Miles Millar spoke to Sci Fi Wire about settling the simmering feud between the TV and motion picture versions of Clark Kent's story. "It's been much better," Millar said in an interview at The WB's winter press preview in Burbank, Calif. "Bryan Singer's a fan of the show, and we sat down and had dinner with him and the writers of the movie [Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris], who we know as well. There's been much more of a dialogue than there was with the J.J. [Abrams] and McG movie. So it's been much better, and we really feel that we're attuned and aligned and know what each other is doing so we don't step on each other's toes. So we're really happy with how it's going."

from comics 2 film today:

---

One, came across a listing at a Warner Bros.-owned website that indicates the previously-listed Michael Gambon as playing the role of Jor-El. The listing could possibly be wrong, though.

Also listed was this description of the film:

"From Bryan Singer, director of the X-Men films, comes a new chapter in the Superman saga. Metropolis' villainous Lex Luthor (Academy Award winner Kevin Spacey - American Beauty, The Usual Suspects) allies himself with a malevolent alien, a demonic brainiac from Krypton, who's out to kill Superman. Superman is overmatched and dies . . . until he's resurrected by an ally from Krypton. Thanks to the love he shares with Lois Lane, he's given his super strength back in the action-filled thriller Superman Returns."

Take it all with a grain of salt - and enjoy! And please, of course, don't repost this without a link back to this page at the very least. Thanks!

It seems like a scheduling conflict and some bad blood between Fox and Warner Brothers prevented Shaun Ashmore from getting the role of Jimmy Olsen. According to this article Fox has a case of sour grapes and is still smarting from Bryan Singer's defection to the Superman movies, hence their unwillingness to be flexible with Ashmore's shooting schedule. If what the article says is true, then it's also unlikely that James Marsden will be reprising his role of Cyclops for the third X-Men movie either (Marsden has a minor role in Superman Returns and would likely have the same scheduling conflict problem).

Superman's 4-5 year exile will be a result of him choosing to help survivors of Krypton form a new colony. Lex Luthor has campaigned that Superman is a traitor of planet earth and the request is made globally that the citizens would prefer he stay with his alien counter parts. Kal-el then goes to start this new colony and discovers they are in need of a new planet. EARTH= We are not talking 3 Kryptonian villains, TRY 300!!!! He makes the choice to go back to earth and fight against his native country men, he must wipe out the remaining people of his home land and save earth. There will be no Metallo this is confirmed. Braniac will be involved but it won't be clear that it's him pulling the strings from the start. So the dynamic is, Braniac takes advantage of luthorcorp. Lex helps signal the Kryptonians to earth through his advanced space technology. All surviving members of Krypton return and only Superman can stop them. The elements of origin will be handled in a few different flashback sequences.

1. Superman returns to smallville learning that his father is now dead. That's right folks, the twist is that his father died during the duration he left earth. This realization causes a flashback to him as a child as he looks at his treehouse which says "Fortress of Solitude"

2. He speaks to his mother, and she explains that while his father didn't want him to leave, he understands him wanting to help the people from his home planet. She eludes to men choosing to help, or choosing to let others suffer. A flashback to the first time he flies takes place. He only flew that first time to save a life.

3. He's nearly killed towards the end of the movie, all hope looks lost. He has a flashback of Jor-el speaking to him in a hologram just before he leaves earth "You must never forget where your responsibility lies. You must never forget where you came from." and Superman's eyes open, turn red and he says to himself "I know where I come from... EARTH" He then proceeds to kick some major ass :-)

I don't understand this... Um, he set up a colony for them, but they're still coming here? If they're trying to take the Earth what the hell was he doing for those 4 - 5 years. I don't know, this sounds fake.

They try and build a colony. The colony fails (for some reason). They head for Earth.

Okay, so it could do with a whole load of fleshing out, but the basic concept makes enough sense.

Could Superman really take on 300 Kryptonias (without killing them)? I know they won’t be as powerful as him but still, there’s 300! I wonder if Supergirl will be among them?

One of the things I like about this set up is that it's sooo crazy. 300 supermen, plus Luthor, plus Braniac is exactly the kind of threat that Superman should have to contend with.

Depends on whether he has a nifty portable phantom zone projector....

Yeah, but would Superman really have to defeat 300 Kryptonians with his fists - or with a Phantom Zone projector, for that matter?

Assuming the summary's legit, sure, there'll be a big dust-up at some point, but I think this situation will ultimately see a resolution that doesn't (entirely) depend on heat vision and head punching.
