>> SUPERMAN/X-MEN 3

Ain't It Cool News claims that "the deals for Bryan Singer, Michael Dougherty & Dan Harris have been closed to helm & write from scratch the new 'Superman' film. Singer, Dougherty and Harris worked together to make 'X2: X-Men United.' The J.J. Abrams script has been completely tossed out. Not a shred of it will remain. That McG-ordered 'Superman' cybersuit that Stan Winston's brilliant craftsmen were paid zillions to create is gone!" This
also seems to affect a certain mutant-themed sequel: "X3 will be made after 'Superman' by Singer, or Fox will leave him behind and continue forward with a new director."

This is good news for Supes, at least.

>> Details on SUPERMAN RETURNS, which is what Team Singer and WB seem to be calling it, are few and far between. But one source, that proved to me today to be quite close to some Warner exec that strikes an amazing resemblence to Lex Luthor himself, hinted to me that this film does not throw the Donner films away and allegedly somehow has something to do with their timeline and history!!! So... from the title, all we're left with is... he must have left, and now he's back.

So they say "not an origin story and will in some way reference the Christopher Reeve films." Hmmmm.... sounds interesting (if these 'sources' are for real)...

SUPERMAN

According to Music from the Movies, Bryan Singer is wasting no time in getting his team ready to tackle the Last Son of Krypton. They note that "X2: X-Men United" editor and composer John Ottman will reteam with on the Warner Brothers film. "'All I can say is that he [Bryan Singer] is going to do it. And yeah, I'm editing and scoring,' Ottman says."

Meanwhile, Superman-V.com claims that Richard Donner and his wife Lauren Shuler Donner are in "deep negotiations" with Warner Bros. to produce the Superman movie, now that Neal Moritz and Gilbert Adler no longer on board. The site also has heard that original Superman himself, Christopher Reeve, might be involved in some producing capacity.

>> Speaking of the Last Son of Krypton, the Los Angeles Times has an extensive retrospective on the beleaguered production's road to ... well, nowhere yet. "When you go down the road with movies that are this expensive, you have to believe in the people, in the process and in the direction you are taking," said Jeff Robinov, president of production for Warner Bros. Pictures. "And honestly, we have not been comfortable."

Well, at least someone's been concerned about all the Superman movie chaos (and the bad direction it was taking before Singer, who hopefully will set it back on track) besides the fans!

"The offer is on the table and we believe it is a two picture deal. With Singer wanting to get his Superman soon he wants an answer within the next 2 - 3 weeks. Singer has already had meetings with other actors to discuss the role with Eddie Cibrian ('Third Watch') and Christopher Douglas ('Passions') being mentioned but has only offered the role to Welling."

I can't believe this, but a small agent I work with (I'm an actor) just sent me the breakdown (what they call casting call summaries) for fucking SUPERMAN!!!!

They clearly have a fake title (much like Batman Begins was often, and still is sometimes, called "The Intimidation Game" for tech and PR purposes to keep down the furor). But this is real.

I feel a little more like a successful actor just for having gotten this breakdown in my inbox. But I'm not at all appropriate for Clark/Supes, so I'm not gonna submit. Although maybe I should mail in my headshot & resume just so Bryan Singer's office has it in a file somewhere...

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the breakdown for Superman. Of course, they're only really seeing big-name or successful unknowns anyway, realistically speaking.

Trust me when I say Tom Welling will not be the next Superman. I'm not sure how that rumor came about but it's bogus. My agency got a casting call last week for Superman. Actors are going to get put on tape starting next week. Singer and his team will then meet actors, sort through the tapes and decide which actors they want to come to Burbank for a final screen test. Word is Superman might be cast as early as September. The search is apparently all over North America. I guess they'll have casting directors in LA, NY and Canada. Another interesting bit. Warners are apparently going to rent the Fox studios for the next 2 years. I don't know what that means. Maybe they're shooting two Superman movies back to back, maybe they're just keeping it for the inevitable Superman sequel, maybe Green Lantern is gearing up, hell, it could be Scooby Doo 3! I honestly don't know, but look for a big Warner production to be in Sydney after Superman."

Interestingly, the casting notice I posted above also showed up on Aint It Cool News. But I do like this Henry Cavill chap they've gone back to many times; he seems like a quality unknown who looks the part...

>> SUPERMAN

According to Superman-V.com the working title for the new film (as the working title for "Batman Begins" is still listed as "The Intimidation Game" on lots of their signage) is "Unbelievable." [as I noted above -- HunterWolf]

Producers are confirmed as Jon Peters and Gilbert Adler. They also allege that "X2" vet Guy Dyas has joined the project as the new production designer, replacing Owen Paterson, who along with costume designer Kym Barrett have left the project, as Dyas himself told them "I can, however, tell you that I have come on board as the new production designer for 'Superman.'" Their source notes "the Superman operation will arrive in Sydney (Fox Studios) later this year. Bryan Singer has been given a two picture deal (Superman and Logan's Run), both of which will be shot in Sydney. Singer and Guy Dyas will initiate concept work, etc, on Logan's Run during the Superman production, again in Sydney. We've been informed that Singer and Dyas are eyeing some top designers and artists to create the look of both films. No word on the (Superman) concept design schedule, but we're sure they'll start this soon. Our source also tells us that Guy Dyas will be flying down to Sydney in the next few weeks. There's a rumor that some shooting will be done in Vancouver, Canada."

In other news, IGN's FilmForce claims that "he script pages now being used to audition actors for the title role in director Bryan Singer's forthcoming Superman movie are not from either J.J. Abrams' old draft or from the new script being penned by Dan Harris and Michael Dougherty. Instead, the casting directors auditioning contenders for the next Man of Steel are using scenes from 1978's 'Superman: The Movie.' The eight-page "sides" we were able to see include three scenes from Richard Donner's film. Two are 'Clark Kent' scenes while the last one is a 'Superman' one. The first is the scene when Clark Kent meets Perry White and Lois Lane on his first day of work at The Daily Planet. The second scene is later that day when Clark and Lois are exiting the Planet and he uses the word 'swell.' The last scene is the interview between Lois Lane and Superman in her penthouse apartment. It ends right before he takes her on their nighttime flight over Metropolis.

Very weird....kind of puts lots of pressure on the actors to not just do a Christopher Reeve impression in the role. Then again, maybe it's just like actors taking on a stage role that someone famous did...

The perfect Lex Luthor? Kurt Angle.

Shit photo there, but you get the point. He's started wearing suits as well now on Smackdown and looks very much the part. I reckon he could handle the demands of the role well. Plus, he's got that important element that Luthor needs/should always have: that brute 'thugness', in that he could kick anyone's ass if he wanted to, and especially beat up Supes if kryptonite was handy. Picture Byrne's Luthor, and Quitely's from JLA: Earth 2. There's a bit of 'harshness' there, that Angle would be able to get across well, just from the look of him.

Could he act? Don't know. I'd say that he's probally better than the Rock, in that Angle plays the smarmy prick role exceptionally well, which could translate well to movies, and especially as Luthor.

"Last week was pretty pathetic. I was like, God, is that all there is? I mean, they were nice on the eyes, but ..."

It's not as if there's no one in Hollywood who fits the bill. But a Who's Who of Hollywood hunks - Jude Law, Ashton Kutcher, Josh Hartnett, Brendan Fraser and Paul Walker among them - reportedly refused to don the blue tights for "Superman Returns: Unbelievable."

"They've had such a run of bad luck getting this thing together," says Martin Grove, a columnist for Hollywood Reporter Online.

"Casting a role that's as high-profile as Superman is obviously a major piece of work. And the bigger the star, the more insecure they are" - which translates to skittishness about signing on to a project that's had a revolving-door relationship with directors.

if i were a high-profile actor, i wouldn't touch the Superman role with a ten-foot pole. first of all, it's just so easy to get wrong. not only is Superman an icon as a character, Christopher Reeve is the definitive Superman like Sean Connery is the definitive Bond, and it's hard not to look like crap in comparison.

even if you don't suck, it may be hard to get taken seriously after you fly around in blue underwear and a cape. Batman's tormented cool. Spider-Man's kinda-nerdy-boy-next-door cool. Superman is a cool character, but the actor playing him in 2004 is going to have a hard time not looking like a dope, just because he's neither brooding nor awkwardly hip. he wears blue tights without irony, which is the kiss of death, you see.

Lex, however, is a great role. people i could see doing it:

- Christopher Walken, by far the best choice. icy and menacing, classy and charming, graceful but hard as nails, obviously brilliant and just as obviously totally insane. that's Lex in a nutshell.
- Jude Law, second best. sharp and smooth and sexy and cold. who thought of casting this guy as Big Blue when he's SO OBVIOUSLY Lex?
- John Malkovitch, a little off somehow.
- Lawrence Fishburne, maybe. he's got gravitas and looks good bald and wearing a power suit.

who should absolutely not do it:

- Michael Rosenbaum. his smile is too genuine and his eyes are too sparkly and light. he's a perfect naive young Lex struggling not to become a supervillain in a TV show, but he'd make a shit adult Lex at the height of his power on the big screen.

i think the same thing applies to Tom Welling. he's a great all-American boy growing up in Smallville with super-powers, but i can't picture him as Superman without laughing.

SUPERMAN

Mark Millar, rumor monger? The comics superstar wrote on his official website a bit of casting news that's almost heavenly: "My same good buddy has informed me that, as of last Thursday night, Mister Jim Caviezel is officially the new man of steel and what a perfect choice he is. Expect an announcement shortly. Also, this 'Superman Returns' thing was just for the press release. The movie itself is called 'SUPERMAN' (Reeve's was called 'SUPERMAN THE MOVIE') and it's starting everything from scratch. Brainiac. Krypton. Robots. Alien super-cities. There's so much we can do now that they couldn't in 78. I cannot WAIT for this."

Superman-V.com notes that two of Singer's "X-Men" cohorts, Louise Mingenbach and Newton Thomas Sigel have signed on as costume designer and director of photography respectively. They'll join Lawrence Hubbs as the art director. The site also contacted the "Batman Begins" production office to clarify whether or not Tom Welling is cameoing in the new "Batman" as rumors last week suggested. A publicist for the department said: 'As far as I know he isn't." Colossus himself, Daniel Cudmore ("X2"), auditioned for the Superman role in Vancouver. His rep confirmed the test for the six foot eight inch tall buff actor. Singer and producer Gil Adler were in Sydney last week scouting locations and checking out a group of stylish buildings, that our source believes may end up being the Daily Planet and Lexcorp Tower buildings.

At Millarworld, Millar wrote:

"First up, this isn't an attack on Harry. I love him and check out his site every day. We love the same movies and seem to have the same pop culture obsessions and would doubtlessly get on like a house on fire should we ever meet.

That said, just to hammer home how confident I am as regards my source (pretty much as good as it gets), I will personally write a cheque to charity for 1000 dollars from my Wolverine royalties (Wolverine 20 and 21 out October 2004) if Jim Caviezel isn't cast as Superman on the day principal photography starts. Warners may have a couple of PR stunts planned prior to the final announcement, but this is a bet that Jim C is standing there in a Superman costume once the cameras start rolling.

Now is AICN so sure of their sources that they will do the same?

PS My charity will be the Clyde Coast Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre.”

Hey folks, Harry here... I love this. I totally agree with Mark Millar - I'm willing to bet we'd be the two point crunch as Nick Frost illustrated last night, if we ever met. I like Mark Millar... Love his writing... but folks... He's WAY wrong - and he'll be paying to a great cause, and that makes me happy, cuz....

JESUS ain't SUPERMAN!

Mark Millar has issued a bet for charity, he named his charity as the CLYDE COAST MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS THERAPY CENTRE... a wonderful wonderful charity. Unfortunately - the charity that I won't be paying (CUZ Jim Caviezel is not gonna be SUPERMAN in the Bryan Singer directed film) would be THE COMIC BOOK LEGAL DEFENSE FUND. So now - the good folks at Clyde Coast need only wait for the first day of photography on SUPERMAN to be 1K richer!"

from an interview with Bryan Singer at aintitcoolnews.com

>> Capone: Well, you won't be so lucky with me, my friend. Where do you stand right with casting SUPERMAN? Is it really going to be called SUPERMAN RETURNS?

B.S.: That's strictly a working title. But it is a return story. It puts the first films in a kind of vague history. So what it doesn't do is tread over the 1978 Richard Donner film, it doesn't tread over "Smallville." It elaborates on the existence of Superman in the world in a history. He's out of the culture and then he returns.
Capone: Will you be using footage from the other films?

B.S.: (Long pause) It's possible. There's an introduction sequence that may or may not involve something like that, but not in the way you might be thinking.
Capone: Is there any truth to the reports that you have a deadline to lock in the main cast or Warner Bros. will step in a do it for you?

B.S.: No, that's absurd. I read that too and think it's just bizarre about James Caviezel, who's a wonderful actor. But, no, I'm committed to casting an unknown.
Capone: So asking you what that unknown might be would be pointless, because we probably would not have heard of this person, right?

B.S.: Right.
Capone: Working on such high-profile projects that put you under the geek electron-microscope, is it a relief to be involved in the television project, where maybe the scrutiny is far less?

B.S.: Absolutely. Not that I mind that scrutiny because I am a geek. I am now, have always been, and forever shall be a geek, as James Cameron said once. This show allows me to shoot so much character dialogue and really takes me back to USUAL SUSPECTS days. That love doesn't always get satisfied on a feature, but this show satisfies that organ. When your life has become big-event superhero movies, and it will now be for several years, a respite like directing and defining a couple episodes of "House" is incredibly necessary. I don't like to take vacations, but this is a kind of vacation, a really pleasurable one. I'm really proud of the show.
Capone: Was it a tough decision to leave X-MEN at a point in the series where the plot for the next film, or at least part of the plot, was so clearly set up in X-2?

B.S.: I had a very strong vision for the next X-MEN picture. But SUPERMAN has always been a dream of mine. Things weren't moving as quickly as...it was difficult, and I love those actors and I have a strong relationship with the X-Men universe. I'm still taking over the writing of Ultimate X-Men for a year, so I'm by no means out of that universe. But I've had an idea for a SUPERMAN movie for many years, so for me the fact that it was available and Warner Bros. was willing to take everything it had spent 11 years developing with three other directors and throw it completely out and let me start from scratch at an accelerated level of time...once they showed the willingness, the desire and excitement to do that after my pitch, it became an obvious choice for me, but a difficult one.

Singer also said the Fortress of Solitude will definitely be in the film.

OK, here's a BIG Superman casting rumor on the net that's just sprung up:

from Newsarama:

CLARK KENT, IS THAT YOU? BRANDON ROUTH IS SUPERMAN?

While it’s been the hottest comics-movie-related rumor game for some time going, several strong indicators are pointing to relatively unknown actor Brandon James Routh as being cast as Superman/Clark Kent. The scoop was broken on LatinoReview.com, and later confirmed (as best these things can be) by both Dark Horizons and Superherohype.com. Check the LationReview link for a large picture of Routh dressed as Clark Kent from a Halloween party.

A announcement from Warner Brothers is reportedly forthcoming, but the casting, as LatinoReview.com points out, jibes with what Superman director Bryan Singer told Ain’t It Cool News, that he was committed to casting an unknown in the role. Routh has had several small parts in television series, and had been in and out of the speculation pile for months, most recently, he was hailed as a possibility by an Iowa television channel. The story was news in Iowa as Routh is from Iowa (not Kansas, sorry purists).

Routh is 6’2” and is 25 years old.

For those watching from home, Mark Millar, who has an ongoing bet with AICN’s Harry Knowles that Jim (Jesus) Caviezel will fill the boots and wear the cape, isn’t impressed with the new news.

At his website, Millar wrote: “As per my original statement, 1000 bucks HAPPILY paid to the MS centre if Jim Caviezel isn't cast as Supes on first day of principal photography. I don't see how this changes anything. It's just another rumour and, like I said, there's two publicity stunts prior to the final announcement according to chums at WB.

BTW, this is no argument with Harry at all. We get on very well and this whole thing is good-natured, as both he and I have stated at length. I love his site and he's a really good guy and fellow comic geek.”

As this news broke over the weekend, there has been no official confirmation or denail from Warner Brothers, with the sites claiming that an announcement will be made in the trades early this week.

-------

Watching Supermans I and II recently, it hit me just how much pressure in on Bryan Singer to really make a great movie. He is now the caretaker of the Superman mythos, to sound super-geeky.

>> Also according to Superhero Hype, director Bryan Singer had a screening of his classic "The Usual Suspects" at USC and had more to say about his efforts on the once-beleaguered Warner Brothers production, including costuming and special effects. "He talked about the suit and what it is going to look like. He said it will be very traditional, but that it will take advantage of the things that were learned on Spiderman. He said that spandex tends to remove definition from someone's build, and that they are going to have to shade the costume to add the effect that the actor is more toned than he really is." Apparently this film picks up at a point when Superman has been missing for six years, and uses the first two "Superman" films as "a vague history" and still hopes to insert a CGI version of Christopher Reeve as a cameo.

Meanwhile, JoBlo claims to have a scoop on the casting of Lois Lane, saying that "Lost" actress Evangeline Lilly is the lead contender.

Also, Patrick Stewart briefly talked about the film with Space View, but apparently did so in German, so best of luck deciphering that.

Finally, writer Dan Harris told Photoblog, "This new Superman film will not be some crazy reworking of the legend as had been rumored. He said it will be similar in tone to the first two Superman films and will basically 'pick up' where Superman 2 left off (the best of the series, I might add!!) He hinted that even Terrence Stamp, who played General Zod so terrifyingly well in the first two Superman films, 'figures' into this new Superman film." To follow up on this, Moviehole talked to Jack O'Halloran, the actor who played Non in Zod's villainous trio, who said, "it has been discussed, but at the moment, there’s nothing much to report. 'They keep talking about it and have been for several years. There was talk of bringing the villains back but we'll see. If they had something to for us to do, yes I would do it. It would be fun.'"

Big news from Aint It Cool News:

>> I just attended the screening of X2: X Men United at the Arclight Cinemas in Hollywood tonight, where Brian Singer made a special appearance and answered some questions regarding the movie. People filled out cards with questions and turned them in and he answered them directly.

I decided to go for the gold and ask about Superman, and he actually addressed my question. My question was, "What can you tell us about Superman?" and he asked me point blank, "What do you want to know?"

Since the news about Brandon Routh being casted hasn't really been officially been confirmed by the WB, as far as I know, I asked that first, and he responded first by correcting my pronunciation of his name (Rowth) and then said, "As of today, yes. He's Superman. He has the perfect physicality for the role and will be great."

He then went on to tell us about how he actually pitched his idea to Richard Donner, director of the original Superman movie, to get his approval first. Donner apparently loved it and then Singer went to Warner Brothers with his idea.

He's going to stay very true to Donner's vision of the Superman mythos, saying that the three most important aspects of the character are young Clark, the Clark facade, and Superman himself.

He asked if there was anything else and I presented him with the most important aspect I could think of. "Will you use John Williams music in the movie?"

He looked at me dead on and said very boldly, "Yes. Definitely yes."

The audience went nuts with this news.

This is going to be an incredible movie. It couldn't possibly be in better hands.

also: here's the news from a couple days ago and the screening then of THE USUAL SUSPECTS...

I just attended a screening of The Usual Suspects at USC (I am a film student), and after the screening, Bryan Singer was onhand to answer questions; needless to say, he was inundated with them.

First off, he was very nervous about replying to questions about the casting of Superman; however at one point he slipped up, and spoke of how he just finished an awesome test with someone which was shot in 60mm film for Superman. He said that, "if I had cast Superman, I spoke to the actor, and he is very happy about the decision...". He slipped up and revealed that Superman had been cast.

Secondly, he talked about the suit and what it is going to look like. He said it will be very traditional, but that it will take advantage of the things that were learned on Spiderman. He said that spandex tends to remove definition from someone's build, and that they are going to have to shade the costume to add the effect that the actor is more toned than he really is.

He also talked about how and his writing parterns crafted a story which could be compared to Tim Burton's Batman (1989). He said that he is going to have the first two films serve as a sort of vague history, and that this next film will pick up after Superman has been gone for 6 years. He said that the story is going to approach Superman as sort of being a returning Messiah. Singer also had an interesting comment that people in the movie sort of wish that Superman had never existed, because once he disappeared, the world fell into chaos.

Singer also divulged some really cool stuff about some sequences and some of the riggs that have been constructed. He said that they have created a rigg which has the capability to "fly" the actor at speeds of up to 40 mph a distance as far as 3 football fields!!! It was amazing stuff, and he said that almost all of the major sequences have already been pre-visualized.

I am not sure that he said much, else; but he pretty much confirmed that Routh has been cast.

One last thing I am remembering; he said that he really wanted to have Reeve make a cameo, and that because they are shooting in Australia (this was his idea before Reeve passed away), he was going to try to do something similar to what was done for that SuperBowl commercial a few years ago; using CGI he was going to try to have Reeve make a cameo while walking! Really exciting stuff!

John Williams doing the music, Kevin Spacey as Lex, a pledge to respect the Superman mythos, etc...

Sounds great, glad Singer is so passionate about this. I just hope he's able to get SOMETHING/ANYTHING out of the door, unlike everyone else who's took a shot at the S.

Not sure about having Reeve walking about like some CGI Frankenstein though.

I heard Singer's thinking about [Kevin] Spacey as Lex Luthor, which is awesome," Smith told The Post.

Kevin Smith in the New York Post.

Christ, Kevin Smith's not in my head is he?

Interesting, then, that if this takes place in the same pseudocontinuity as the previous Superman movies, we're gonna have more of a Pre-Crisis style "I'm the world's greatest criminal mind!" Luthor rather than the Post-Crisis "I'm so evil and nobody even knows it" version. I'm up for that.

With Smallville being what it is, though, I'd've thought WB would push for the sinister businessman. Although maybe that's what he's become in this mysterious 6-year gap of time or whatever.

More news...

October 21, 2004 - Coming Attractions at Cinescape Online reports that director Bryan Singer has six actresses on his shortlist to play Lois Lane opposite Brandon Routh as Superman.

According to the site, the contenders are Natalie Portman (the Star Wars prequels), Keri Russell (Felicity), Mischa Barton (The O.C.), Charisma Carpenter (Angel), Evangeline Lilly (Lost), and Mia Kirshner (The Crow: City of Angels).

Portman, Barton and Lilly have been rumored for the role in the past. Carpenter, Kirshner and Russell have not, although Russell was a finalist to play The Invisible Woman in Fantastic Four (a role that Jessica Alba won).

Singer and company reportedly venture Down Under next month to begin production on Superman. It opens in 2006.

I'd love to see Charisma Carpenter get the role.
