Vincennes, no, the fellow who brought it reminded us of it when we served pudding and then drank 3/4 of the half bottle himself. He didn't seem all that bothered by the fact that no-one else wanted it, and cheerfully admitted that it wasn't very nice.

Hmm, gentle hammering then. I shall try it Grey Area.

Vincennes: I think it wouldn't be improper to give your guests the choice. Ask them, "Would you like to open the bottle you brought, or would you like try some of this first?" If they are unsure, and suggest you decide, and you really want to try the wine they brought, well, open it saying, "Well, this looks lovely let's share this". If you don't want to particularly drink it,(and it is not something hideous, like pudding wine...wtf?) then suggeest that you and your guests have it for dinner. Although, one would presume that if you are having guests for dinner, you would already have a complimentary wine stocked.

I am not certain on the exact proper etiquette, but I have never had a problem with the situation when I handled it like this, nor when those I was visiting handled things this way.

Wine etiquette

Practical:
First come, first open. New arrivals drink open bottles, then you open theirs in order of arrival/chilledness. Drink until gone.

Tactical:
Start the evening with half a dozen bottles (or however many will serve all your guests a couple of glasses) of your own half-decent plonk. Once this looks like running out, sneak into the kitchen and arrange all the brought bottles into order of niceness, from '57 Margaux down to 2005 Lambrini. Leave the nasty stuff till last. Line up some brake fluid for after that, just in case.

Voila!

Next Question: Building regs / planning applications

Can anyone point me to a simple list of general rules concerning what you can and can't build in your back garden? You know, stuff like 'you can't have anything more than 10 metres tall', 'it must be at least 3 metres from the house' etc? I've looked at every flipping council and govt page on the web (that's a slight exaggeration) and can find NOWT.

Or are there no such rules, and they just make it up as they go along? Help, please.

In the States, those things are all local rules... not just by municipality, but often by neighborhood. If you was here, I'd say call local "Code Enforcement" at the town hall.
I'm sure you have different terminology.

Right-ho, can anyone tell me whether blowing your nose is of any benefit above and beyond relieving discomfort?

grant

I've read somewhere that the bugs what make your nose all stuffed up (bacteria, viruses) actually use the mucus to hitch lifts to different systems, where they try to take hold -- primarily your lungs.

I did read a letter to JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) where a doctor from New England someplace actually recommended "snorking and swallowing" (his terminology) since it really made no difference, but I've heard from other medical types since then that yes, it's better to get that stuff out than stick it elsewhere in your body.

Saveloy. There are lots and lots and lots of rules that govern such things, including whether or not you can put signs up by the road or CB antennas in your garden.

What you need is a brochure called 'Planning, a Guide for Householders', it's online here at the ODPM.

It's an ace little guide, and I don't understand why they hide it away in the bowels of government webness.

Though I can't cite sources I do remember a report saying that blowing your nose could just end up forcing snot, and thus germs, further into your body.

Oh gawd, the thought of mucus in my sinus cavity is making my eyes water.

For Fuck's sake, get that crap out of your body! The western body doesn't need any more mucus!

Loomis
19:15 / 26.01.05
But what about cold and flu tablets that dry up all the mucus in your nose and sinuses? Is that good because it stops you being over-run with crap, or is it bad because doesn't let you get the crap out of your body?

I guess a better way of putting that is: is the buildup of mucus the problem or is it just one annoying symptom of the illness?

Papess
19:19 / 26.01.05
Just an annoying symptom of illness, but a necessary one. So, those tablets that help you dry up, aren't really good because unless you find another way to get that stuff out of your body, it doesn't really go anywhere. But which is why I think that a colonic or at least an enema is about the best thing for a cold.

Of course, people just get way too childish about putting a bit of water up their butt.

Jack Fear
19:21 / 26.01.05
As I understand it, it's not so much that there's more mucus when you've got a cold—just that what mucus you've got is much thicker.

The real enemy is dehydration—presumably you're losing fluid to perspiration, diarrhea, etc. Plus in winter time the air is so much dryer anyway.

So really, the best thing to do is to keep vy. well-hydrated—sip water throughout the day—even if it means running to the bathroom every ten minutes.

Does anyone know of a site that collects television ads for download? Or have a couple that they could perhaps make available to me? I'd like to try spicing up the lectures I give this semester with a couple of examples, just to wake the students up, but am having difficulty finding clips. Doesn't have to be the most recent archive, but they do have to be relatively clean (no nudity, no sex, no foul language [or foul language bleeped out]).

Cramp. Cramp in my right foot, nearly every single night after about four hours sleep. Suggestions, anyone? It's really starting to do my swede in, as nobody I know says.

As I understand it cramp is to do with bad circulation, so get exercising.

Spaniel
06:00 / 17.02.05
Oh, and I think it has something to do with dehydration, too, so get drinking.

Not a preventative suggestion, but cramp in the foot can often be relieved quickly by pulling your foot up - toes towards shin - and stretching the achilles tendon.

Salt helps, also, apparently. That's what the doctor told me - I have the same crampy problem. It's worse after I drink, also, which is where the dehydration aspect comes in.

Cheers guys. Boboss' explanation sounds about right - iffy circulation's one of my things. And I've been a bit of a lazy git recently.

Here is the BBC health site about Cramp. Apparently Quinine helps and there are such things as Quinine tablets.

Also you should make sure your diet has enough calcium and magnesium in it. Eat leafy, green vegetables, fruit, (apricots are particularly efficacious) yoghurt and sesame seeds.

Spatch: I get the same thing, along with "restless legs." The only thing that ever really helps is regular excercise. Add a half-hour walk to your daily routine, that should take care of it.

Reidcourchie: The Convent was in Ladbroke Grove / Notting Hill, as far as I can remember... I don't remember him having a right-hand man.... unfortunately, I don't have of the books at hand.

wasn't the faithful roadie guy called zoot horn or mo sax or something like that?

Spatula Clarke

Mordant: Yeah, that's what I'm aiming to do. I used to get plenty of exercise through work - nine, ten hours on my feet per day sort of thing - but since quitting that job I've not done anything like as much, and in the last few months it's got even worse. So I'm thinking that this cramp is either the result of going from plenty to fackall in a relatively short space of time, or that I was always susceptible to it, but was previously doing the necessary exercise and so never knew.

So yeah, change in routine starting as soon as. If that doesn't work I'll see about having a crack at Lula's quinine suggestion.

Cheers Baz & Gumbitch, thanks for the reply. Mo rings a bell, though so does the name Riggs for some reason. My copies are buried deep in a packing case somewhere.

Shaky Mo Collier, dude. And Spatula, I believe gin and tonic is an excellent source of quinine. So, that's something.

For hairstyles and headshots have you tried looking at the websites of major salons like Toni & Guy? Or you could look at modeling agencies, as they'll have lots of head shots. Models 1 is a UK based agency...I guess it kind of depends on the looks you are wanting to get though.

Very informative and I hadn't thought of either. Ta psi-lock although I took the easy way out and shaved my head this morn
they will be useful for future haircut experiments.
