Why does the Guardian persistently crash my IE, and sometimes casue the whole desktop to freeze up (meaning that I have to reboot)? No other website does this. I'm using XP for the office.

KKC -- You may get some relief by going to Tools/Internet Options/Advanced and unticking the boxes under 'Microsoft VM', i.e. switch Java off. You probably won't miss it -- any decent site should automatically give you a non-Java version of whatever page you want to look at.

Has anyone here done one-to-one English teaching?

I want to start giving private English lessons here in Barcelona but I'm not sure where to start. Note that I don't have any qualifications as such (I completed a CELTA course but I didn't get the certificate), so working at a school is probably out.

Once I've put up my cards on the local notice-boards and got some replies, what's my next step?

I'm afraid I don't know, but the people over at the message board at Dave's ESL Cafe could probably help you...

Right, to the computer experts amongst us, I've just downloaded a copy of X-Com Apocalypse, but I can't get the fucker to work. I think the problem is that I'm not running Windows 95 (I'm running XP).

Is there anything I can do?

Gray Area.

This may help, but only if you are running on a PC

http://www.softaward.com/8320.html

also, may be something here, I haven't looked yet, but you never know;

http://www.ipodhacks.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Forum&file=viewforum&forum=2&start=460

the program that you mention, I actually had it, but have lost it also - I've emailed my mac-spert friend, but he is away at the moment, he gave me the link originally to the site for the program, so once he gets back to me, I'll post the name here for you.

Bobossboy - I'm afraid I couldn't get Apocalypse to work on an XP machine, but it does work on Win 98, so maybe you could try a dual boot with 98 or just borrowing somebody's old Win98 machine.

However, you really ought to look into your heart before you do it.X-Com: Apocalypse is not a decision to make lightly...

Thanks Benny...I actually ended up downloading a plug-in for Winamp that does the job rather well. You can't buy songs, but it moves music to and from the iPod, sets up playlists, synchs ratings and a raft of other stuff I don't really need.

Boboss/Haus> Is this any use? I'd try it myself, but can't find my copy of Apocalypse at the moment.

I think there may be a few of these from NaNoWriMo-ers over the coming weeks ...

1) What's that Anglo-Saxon quote (NOT in the original thank you, Mensa members) about something being as small/insignificant as a fly at a cathedral door? Thought it was Bede and have googled, but no joy.

2) Can't lay my hands on my copy of Perdido Street Station atm and don't want to plagiarise, so can someone remind me what the effects of Dreamshit were in that novel?

Cheersy. A fun-size virtual Mars to the first to answer either question.

Does anyone know the origin of the phrase 'bleeding hearts'? Like, presumably at some point somebody said 'My heart bleeds' without being either sarcastic or hopelessly wet. Who was it?

What's the formula for porn star names again? I'm off to a 'Come as Your Porn Star Name' party next week so it's very important I get it right. I vaguely recall that there are several ways of working it out, and that pet names come into it somewhere.

Once I've worked out what my PS name is, I shall prolly be asking for costume tips as well.

Forename = pet's name.
Surname = mother's maiden name.

Wow. I don't think I ever realised what a horrible term 'maiden name' is before.

I think it's one of those things that has a different forumla every time it's told. I heard it was the name of your first pet plus the name of the first street you lived on. So it's Snoopy River for me. HOTT.

More facts! More, I say! Ones that will answer the following questions:

Wood
I've got some planks. Pine, 10 foot long, 8-and-a-bit inches wide (21cm in new money). Nice and straight from one end to t'other, but widthways they are warped, ie they look like sticks of celery. Is there any hope? Can wood be unwarped without resorting to, erm, soaking in special warping fluid and that? Can I just bung a load of weights on top and expect it to settle down?

Hedgehogs
Is it possible to tell a hibernating hedgehog apart from a dead one (without prodding it and going "oi, wake up!")?

Sav: 1. I'd try getting them wet first. With ordinary water. Then, I'd use a lot of weight and leave it on them for a while -- two days, maybe a week. I know you can make a bow out of a straight dowel by putting it in a tub of water with a brick on the middle then letting it dry out in place; reversing the process should work the same way.

2. With a tiny mirror and a stethoscope, to see if they're breathing/heart is beating. Alternately, just wait and see if they start stinking.

Porn star name = first pet's name + first street name

Thus I am Goldie Coxmoor. You couldn't make it up.

But if your mother's maiden name was Tightquim, I'd go with the other version. Whatever works for you ...

The porn thing never really worked for me, I always ended up sounding like an end of the pier entertainer;

Max Crowther

or

Max Strathdon

depending on method.
