That all sounds really positive. I was hoping that they'd play the Joker as a despicable bastard without even humour to get the audience on his side, which was the failure of the first Burton movie. He should be closer to the DKR Joker, seemingly possessed, terrifying, and the only jokes he cracks should be so vile that only he laughs.

Joker should make jokes that are funny from a meta/audience standpoint, though. 'The Killing Joke' needs the joke at the end. And it's funny. Similarly, I laughed at the 'April Fools!' that comes up every so. The eyes and the pencil and that poor woman. Maybe nobody in-story, but from outside it all, we should be capable of seeing the absurdity and artifice enough to laugh.
Sympathize? Joker as deeply-human is simply not The Joker. He is as he is, postmodern city-built madman come to fuck up everything. The spectacle with big fucking teeth and a finicky appetite that shifts often.

confirmation that Philip Seymour Hoffman is in talks to play...(read below for the answer!)

>> BATMAN BEGINS 2 (from comics 2 film)

Batman On Film has an update on the "Philip Seymour Hoffman as Penguin" rumor, with a scooper report that may shed some light on the subject. "I live in the Rochester, NY area," their spy wrote, "which is where Philip Seymour Hoffman grew up. The media has been covering his Golden Globe nomination for 'CAPOTE,' and in a recent interview with his old high school drama teacher (who remains close to him) on a local news program, she confirmed that Hoffman has been in talks to take on The Penguin in the upcoming 'BATMAN' sequel and is very interested in the role."

The Joker as he is in Arkham Asylum, saying and doing things which in another universe would be funny if he wasn't so bloody terrifying would be best.

if they do get PSH for Penguin, Crispin Glover for Joker, portraying his origin as in THE KILLING JOKE and not getting silly in the end [as BEGINS did] I'll be the happiest nerd this side of the planet.

Strolling through a toy aisle today, I saw a Batman Begins action figure -- you know how they often have translations of the same text in multiple languages? Well, the Spanish version of the paragraph had, instead of "BRUCE WAYNE takes the streets of Gotham City to...", "BRUNO DIAZ yadda yadda el Citio Gotico." Bruno Diaz in Gothic City. I love it. I guess they felt they had to change his last name for Spanish readers since there's no direct translation of "Wayne"? Why not just Bruno Wayne?

Just a silly thing I noticed that made me laugh.

ahhaahahahh, I love this! didn't know some countries still did this [and now use Google for translations?]. decades ago in Brazil Clark Kent was 'Edu' - as in 'Ed'.

We’re also told that every actor in town is interested in playing The Joker in the next film. Chris Nolan is pretty keen on getting ‘a name’ though.

“As you know, there are many actors who want the chance to do this character (The most requested Batman character next to Batman himself.) The studio is eyeing a major, major actor and Christopher Nolan himself is said to be just as excited as they are in nabbing him for the role. Who is he? Let’s just say that he has a major film coming out this summer and it’s a sequel to one of his biggest hits. In fact, his performance in the first movie was nominated for an Oscar. YES, they are looking at HIM if he is available for the role and rumor is that he might be interested depending on the script, which is being written right now”.

oh, fuck... it can only be PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN.

I agree. Vincent Cassel was more... non-ubiquitous.

only 3 guys can play the Joker properly. one's Crispin Glover, the others Jim Carrey and Johnny Depp. if the rumour is true and Depp signs for it, it'll even keep a tradition of great [and cool] actors of their times in the role.

Cassel and Brody are cool and Depp may be suffering from Hackmanittis [or Cainettis] but come on, it's Johnny Depp. only thing that puts me down in Depp is that it'd be much better to see Bale punching Cassel and Brody in the face.

oh, casting calls, always flexing that nerd muscle...

Dude. THERE CAN ONLY BE THREE. He said it, he said it right there. Because all those actors have personally given Hec-tooooor their rendition of how they feel the Joker should be played, at a private showing (somewhat like a lapdance) and he gave them all the thumbs up.

All the other actors who came and tried to impress Hector with their personal takes on the Joker, unfortunately, did not impress him (poor, poor Sean Penn). And may they hold their heads in shame. IN SHAME.

How they sleep at night, we may never know.

Gallo.

Gallo!

GALLO!!!1!

That's right, you heard me: REMEMBER GALLO, Hector! Hold Gallo in your thoughts when you think about the Joker. Mr Vee Gee, Vincent "Chinny Vince!" Gallo. Now imagine him wrestling around with Christian Bale. Hold that thought. Hold that thought. Hold that thought.

aaaand relax.

Suedey, and they all sucked me too.

I thought my last sentence was enough to ensure it was a - slightly ironical - geeky outburst. sorry if I sounded arrogant, man.

[so much for going crazy on nerdy casting calls...]

so let's never forget Carrey was under the direction of this man:

who was aiming for a Batvibe from the 60s with that movie. and that JC has grown as fine serious actor, as far as "serious" Hollywood movies go.

Still, Bed wins.

...JC has grown as fine serious actor, as far as "serious" Hollywood movies go.

...and also grown into the most highly (over)paid actor in Hollywood, whose pricetag would seriously skew the budget of any proposed film.

He's also "grown" into a raging egomaniac monster who sent a little B-movie caper comedy (FUN WITH DICK AND JANE) over $100 million in costs with his insistence on keeping the cameras rolling for thrity or forty takes of every goddam scene while he improvised and fucked around and groped his way toward the funny, who did the same on LEMONY SNICKET'S A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS, in both cases leaving the studios with little to show for it but a box-office bomb and a shitload of deleted scenes for the DVD.

The combination—waning box-office draw, hard to work with, ludicrous salary—makes me wonder why anybody still hires this prick.

I promised not to post about casting calls as I came out as such an idiot upthread, but...

alleged strong insider rumor of talks regarding Paul Bettany [Mr Jennifer Connelly] as Joker, Jake Gyllenhaal as Harvey Dent.

Ditto, FinderWolf. I'm still holding out hope they'll go with Liev Schreiber.

He's got that slight Carey Grant look to him and he's a fantastic actor (I thought he was incredible in RKO 281, playing Orson Welles). He's probably too busy with directing now though to take up the part.

I maintain than Alan Cumming would be perfectly brilliant as the Joker. Just think about it. Oh, that's right. It goes down nice and smooth.

more rumours [including Harvey Dent, Harley Quinn, Sal Moroni, Jeremiah Arkhan etc]:

It is really looking like Mr. Bettany will be Mr. J…

Don’t expect a “Nicholson-ized” Joker -- not in terms of how The Joker looks, acts, or is motivation. This will be something totally different, but true to the spirit of the character. His white skin will be natural (read: he doesn't wear white make-up), while the rest of his “Joker look” necessarily may not…

According to a reliable Batman on Film insider, the look of the Joker may well be a nod to the original visual inspiration for the character: Gwynplaine, from the 1927 film The Man Who Laughs.

Nasty. If they get even close I'll be very happy.

The first half of this film was exactly what the Batman series needed, the second half however... it dipped (ever so slightly) into the regular campy shenanigans we saw in the last few installments.

Considering the sequels:

I could really see Paul Bettany as the Joker. Just look at him in the film, Gangster No. 1... he has the ability to convince the audience of the dark, under-current of broiling violence that sits just below the surface of the Joker. I think he's got the wicked smile for it too, with a bit of cosmetic's, he could look extremely evil.

On the topic of PSH as th Penguin, it would really require an actor of his calibre to rejuvinate that character for me, especially after the Tim Burton 'Danny DeVito' nonsense. But even with PSH in the role, I'm struggling to see how it could maintain the realism required to keep the new Batman Begins franchise alive.

comics2film sez:

>> BATMAN BEGINS 2

>> We got an email from "Jett" Ramey from Batman-On-FIlm, who noted that they have quotes from actor Lachy Hulme, who spoke a bit about the sequel on Australian radio. "Hulme said that he had met with the producers but said he wasn't really allowed to talk about it. He also said that he was a huge Batman fan and had been all of his life, and was now collecting Batman stuff because it was tax deductible for him now!"

damn, pardner, them fancy folks from the west coast sure did pick the wrong sissy cowboy, now didn't they? at least if it was Jake Gyllenhaal...

if Ledger doesn't turn out very good I'll have him replaced with Crispin Glover while watching the film... with the CGI from my mind.

i get so carried away with Joker casting... can't help it.

Wow, they really went with Ledger....part of me really wants to believe that he can be an amazing, iconic Joker, but part of me thinks "Wow, there was no one else in all of Hollywood better than him for this role? They *really* came to that conclusion???"

If Ledger really succeeds here, it will be a wonderful example of an actor breaking out of typecasting and doing a role that you never would have expected him to do well. I have faith in Nolan & Co. - they had their pick of Hollywood's best actors and they chose Ledger. Ledger doesn't even LOOK remotely Joker-ish to me, but they must have seen something there... and Ledger did really pull off a great transformation in Brokeback Mountain; it was very unlike previous Ledger roles I've seen. So maybe there's a real chameleon inside Ledger just waiting to get out, and this is its chance...

and yes, I am aware that upon re-reading what I wrote, I used the word "really" about 6 times. I guess that's because, perhaps like many comics fans, my reaction can be best summed up as "Heath Ledger as the Joker? REALLY?" But I'm giving the man a chance.
