Things just get worse for the poor girl, just heard on the radion that Peter Stringfellow has offered her a job as a stripper when she leaves.

Ah, that Stringfellow is a gentleman of rare taste and discernment, right enough! I am beginning to feel just a bit sorry for the Michelin girl. The shit she's gonna have to come to terms with on her departure from that great whited sepulchre! If only her volume control wasn't broken and the rpm setting too high...

Pictures of an undoubtedly ginger Tim in a colleague's Now magazine, btw. Where's yer "mousy brown" now, Lord Culley? T minus 06.27 and counting...

Interesting link to the Guardian website… but personally, I think it’s mainly bunk. Jade’s behaviour is frequently appalling not because she’s female, it’s just frequently appalling, full stop. Petulant and self-centred and irrational and childish – all of which adjectives can equally be applied to many of the other people on the show, regardless of gender.

And women are supposed to rally round her just because she’s female ? What kind of judgement would that show ? What, so on that one pretext women should rally round Myra Hindley ? Imelda Marcos? Winnie Mandela ? Margaret Thatcher (cf the many arguments that Thatcher was not, strictly speaking, a woman) ?
No, that’s a startlingly poor line of argument in the article.
Still, it fills column space, eh ?

But she’s quite right about the abuse on the basis of appearance – there’s no need for that.

zocher, thanks for the link! my friend actually read that article in the guardian and saved it for me. it almost made me cry. i can't believe the visciousness that jade has recieved from the press, and i do think it's because of sexism. i think that the level of abuse she has had and will have is totally fucked up.
i don't think all women are great and all men are bad; that isn't what being a feminist is about. i personally get pissed off with the strict gender roles that are present in this society, the codes in which females and males are supposed to behave. jade getting called a 'slag' whereas pj gets thongs thrown at him is sexism on a grand scale.
but anyway.
and as much as i love jade, i do find her annoying. but she's not as mean as alex, or blah as kate; so i will be happy if jade or jonny wins.
i think that if jade does win, that will be the biggest "fuck you" to the british tabloids ever. but i doubt it's going to happen.
if she gets booed or called a pig when she leaves the house, i'm actually going to be really upset.

I read that article and agreed with a lot of it. It made me feel mildly guilty for enjoying the early stages of the 'pig' savagery. Once we'd learned a little more about her disadvantaged background (father in prison, alcohol-dependent, rough-as-fuck mother whose response to bullying was to send her to school armed with scissors and squeezy bottles of lemon juice to "squirt in the other kids' eyes") one could more readily see how she's evolved the way she has. Making herself the butt of others' jokes (by exaggerating her own stupidity, shedding her clothes despite a less-than-perfect body, etc.) seems to be a rather pathetic way of getting them to like her - and I think the 'two-facedness' (agreeing wholeheartedly with whoever she happens to be talking to at the time) is an extension of that.

I'm quite worried about her being booed. Both Adele and Tim had the self-belief (and lack of insight) necessary to withstand such an ego assault, but I worry that poor Jade will be destroyed by it. Hopefully, the fact that she's made it into the final week will, to some extent, help her override the inevitable nastiness...

I tend to think that Jade was labelled 'pig' because of her porcine features (small turned up nose, small eyes, gurning chubby face), rather than her weight. But I agree that it's deeply unnecessary.

I'm not sure why hearing that Jade has a disadvantaged background should make her more sympathetic, though. She may well be exaggerating the 'Jadeisms' (it would explain the astonishing lapses in brain), but her basic mannerisms remain the same... bloody annoying. She's also louder than green checked trousers, unable to engage with people on any level above that of purest small talk, and was clearly chosen for precisely those qualities. That said, victimising the woman is harsh.

Ganesh
12:44 / 20.07.02
Knowing where she came from (in terms of parents, schooling, etc.) makes her more readily understandable - for me, anyway - and some awareness of how those annoying character traits developed makes it easier to forgive them. I guess there's a touch of 'there but for the grace of God', y'know?

re: germaine greer's comments.
i think what she said was nasty, but she is going to be more chastised for it because she is a card carrying feminist. being a feminist in the spotlight means to having to, as people here have pointed out, stick up for all girls because they are girls. i sometimes feel that push also. i am more likely to stick up for girls being a feminist, but i'm not going to if i don't like them. but i didn't think it was cool her using the word 'slag' and i still don't.
anyway.
the task tonight was cute. alex was running around the garden like a lil rat. seeing spencer, pj, sophie and lee was actually kina sweet. all my flatmates want to see jade in the final three. so i guess i can be sort of persuasive huh!

It'll upset them, sure, but not as much as that.

You div.

Germaine can be a bit tough sometimes. I think she'd say, "If the girl's quite happy to fulfil the 'Fat Slag' role, then she's welcome to it." which, far as I'm concerned, is fucking unfair and usympathetic and shit, but there you go: I'm not a woman worried about oppression, viddying a young girl on national TV acting like a feminist's nightmare.... Perhaps she just thinks Jade reinforces baaaad 'n' evil stereotypes.

Anyway, enough mindreading.

The article was pretty spot on, methinks. And loads of the shit aimed at Jade is predicated upoun unpleasant/faulty notions of the female.

R - Yes I am from Chicago so it's not the first time I've been here, and obviously flying back to visit friends is more exciting than watching big brother but i still wish the finale was next friday instead of this upcoming one.

Oh, and I love the Sunday behavioral show!! That's the best part!! Ganesh I think you should apply to be one of the show's analysts.

Jade: For all her detractors, though, she does now have a lot of supporters. I expect when she gets out she'll have a combo of boos and cheers - though once she reads the things that have been written about her...

I don't know how you can really get on any of them for being bitchy. Haven't they all been bitchy at one time or another? Except for maybe possibly Jonny?

Thanks for that, it's been years since I've heard anyone use the phrase "div"! I was just trying to point out that in all probability men shouldn't be defining what 'sisterhood' should and shouldn't be. Apparently. And also that lists of 'bad women' like that are, well, dunno. Questionable maybe. Not sure. (And no Suds, I didn't have you in mind at all.) And anyway I agree with the mainpart of the Guardian article. There has moreover also been at least one article in the media suggesting that Jade's mental health is such that she should never have been allowed to go near BB and stands a real chance of being seriously damaged by it all.

I concur entirely, suds, which means you must have snuck into my room last night and performed a Vulcan mind-meld.

Even Graham Norton, who has a 100% record in BB predictions I believe, has stopped lambasting the poor wench and begun campaigning for her.

Sadly, either Ganesh or I is gonna miss the big finale on Friday, since one or other of us has to travel up or down. At the moment, looks like I'll be the lucky one to stay put. I love that elephant man! He's so noble...

However, am finding all the rest of the daily trivia which filters through my ageing brain dwarfed by the thought of the End of the 'Lith, a few days thereafter. This virtual fun has its limits, all ways round, huh?

DaveBCooper
11:13 / 23.07.02
No, I couldn’t think of anyone on the ‘lith who’d object to my comments either, which is why I didn’t think they’d cause offence really… was more concerned at the suggestion that women should act a certain way (that is, rally round Jade) because of their gender, ‘cause that kind of sounds like specifying roles, and, well, isn’t that kind of a bad thing to do ?

Anyway, glad to see Tim go. He didn’t bring much to the house, or the show, and some of his opinions were so ill-considered and unpleasant I found it disappointing that people didn’t challenge him on them, really. Bewildering to see his Robbie-Williams-style hands behind the ears thing, mind.
It did occur to me that ‘the latecomers’ over the years (Claire, Josh, Sophie, and Tim) never quite seem to appeal as much as the other people in BB, and they’re usually gone pretty swiftly.
Anyone have any thoughts on why this might be ?

Josh was alright (esp when he started to get all nasty and intimidatey w/ Brian), but generally the new guys have just been a bit boring. More to do w/ lack of personality than newness, I think.

DBC: "glad to see Tim go. He didn’t bring much to the house, or the show, and some of his opinions were so ill-considered and unpleasant I found it disappointing that people didn’t challenge him on them, really."

Change "disappointed" to "really, really fucked off" and I agree wholeheartedly.

Ah well, you see, I thought Josh was disappointing because he won the telephone vote by promising nudity, naughtiness and nocturnal something-or-other, and failed to do those things when he got in the house. And I thought it was telling that when he was put into the diary room on his first day, he had his sunglasses on his head, and then when he emerged into the house he’d put them on… indoors… which I thought was a bit posey.
And he’s fitter and probably more attractive than I am. Oh what a giveaway.

I'm going to vote for Alex, for one simple reason. The winner will probably end up with a presenting job on some show or other, and, out of the four of them, Alex is about the only one I could put up with seeing on TV on a regular basis. Despite the more precious aspects of his personality he's intelligent (IIRC, he's the only one who disagreed with Tim's views on money and immigration), funny and it seems that, along with all the other countries he visited as a child, his parents also took him on a trip to Selfawaria (none of the others have shown any real regrets about their arguments).

Jade winning will be down to feelings of guilt on the part of the public, nothing more.

I'd truly hate to see Alex win it. Nice enough lad, but the whole cleaning thing and a certain arrogance spoil it. If you were just thinking about money then Jade should have it. I can think of few other people I would like to give a large wad of cash to. Just in the hope that things would be ok.
I reckon it has to be Jonny though. A nice lad who has been mature and fair in his dealings with everyone.

Yeah, I still quite like Alex. I don't buy the "Alex is cruel" line either. They've all participated in the give Jade shit games, and, really, I can quite understand all his stoney silences and overall intolerance towards the girl. I'm not sure I'd be able to behave any differently and I don't think I'm particularly cruel. I mean, before we give Alex shit, imagive living with Jade - go on - imagine being cooped up w/ her for weeks on end with nothing to do and nowhere to go! Arrgh!

.. but i do see what you mean, sorta. i think all of them are pissy with everyone else in the house, and i would be too. i think kate should be pissy with jonny for practically forcing her to drink more when she was almost unconcious. jade was a hella good nurse to kate, and don't lets forget it.

we will know who has won big brother this time tomorrow. i'm sorta going to miss it, but mainly for jade. at the beach party, and they all just sort of sat around but jade got a glass of champagne, danced and sang (including one she made up about her hammock), ate all the pop-corn and ice-cream she could and just had fun. she is so hott.

The dinner party at the moment is a pretty good example of Jade's worst habit: interupting. So very annoying. Nobody else has manage to finish a sentence so far.

And why, why, why do Channel 4 insist on showing it live when they know that they're going to have to kill the sound?

Bear
06:46 / 26.07.02
I agree with Randy about the interrupting, Alex was having one of his sensitive moments and Jade kept shouting, I can't even remember what about....

As for the sound dips, I don't think it is actually live is it? I think there's about a 10 minute delay so they know when to blank out the trouble causing sections?

Anyway final tonight, eh Kate to win !

There’s a good timeline in Private Eye (in the Hackwatch section) this week covering the Jade volte-face from the papers, and it set me to wondering : anyone have any idea why they did this (apart from the grubby fact they want to sell their papers, which I take as a given)?
Is it because they realised that when she came out, the headlines etc could genuinely have mentally and emotionally scarred her? Or is that crediting them with too much sensitivity and understanding of causation? Anyone?

I haven’t seen much of the show in recent days, I’ll admit, but in a wider version of Randy and Bear’s comments, I rather feel that the latter half of this year’s run has rather been overshadowed by Jade – both in- and out-side the house.

And like suds, I’m not really worried about who wins. It’s more fun to watch them interacting than to watch the ‘money being transferred into your account’ (is that for real? My bank doesn’t credit stuff to my account at 11 at night) and all the fluff that surrounds it. Anyone else notice the way that Davina’s ‘dramatic pause’ gets longer as the show progresses? Starts off at about 3 seconds, and ends up nearer to 10, in an almost ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’ – style bit of melodrama/padding…

i was sad that jade was the first to go but just how beautiful did she look tonight? wow! and her interview was the best out of all of them.
i was also happy that a woman won big brother, finally.
i have had fun posting here on barbelith about big brother because everyone here has been hilarious and insightful. i will be really upset if barbelith does go mainly based on the fun i've had posting in this thread amongst others. i honestly want to fucking publish this thread, it's been that cool.
but anyway. welldone kate who gets £70,000 and welldone o2 and channel 4 who probably get £70 million.
what am i going to do without seeing jade's cute tum tum every night?

Good to see that the Big Brother tradition of forcefully seperating the winner from their family continues. Also good to see Sandy proving what a complete and utter twat he is and Tim being given exactly the same reception as on his eviction night, but apparently not expecting it this time.

Oh, and back on the subject of the sound dips, it certainly looks like it's properly live, with the sound being killed on the spot. Hence we get a couple of seconds of Alex inspecting the fancy razors he was given and deciding "they're really clever, but they'll probably cut your face to sh..". I was also slightly bemused when the music was cut at the party last night. Either C4 hadn't yet got permission to broadcast it, or they were unwilling to pay to broadcast it twice.

The most annoying part of it is that it happens whenever one of the contestants is about to let their guard down. Half the dips seem to have come when somebody's talking about their family or friends, which would undoubtedly be the one section of the entire program where you'd see them in their true light.
