That is a great cover.

I think the Bats ASS interview'll be up next week.

Hey, since the New Gods are a big part of this, what do you think of this:

SOURCE WALL = FOURTH WALL AS SEEN FROM THE INSIDE OF THE DCU'S FICTION

I mean, they always say that all of creation stems from behind the source wall; and it sounds like something GM might do, or at least alude to...

I like that and it's certainly in line with one of Morrison's current themes/motifs.

Tasty cover too.

The cover for #2 with Batman is out (and also the new psychedelic Alex Ross' Batman Rip cover), very "New Gods by 7S' JH Williams" thingy going on there.

I think Morrison did poked around the New Gods with that spectacle during JLA and Mr Miracle, Scientist -- but if I remember correctly, not with that (somewhat restraining) x=y bluntness of categorization. I think it's a rather more fluid pinball table with less preoccupation with naming then going for story or ways to experience/simulate those weird structures and crazy shenanigans.

The cover for the second issue. If the New Gods transcend, this makes me wonder if Batman will fulfill the Scott Free role in whatever comes next...

You do know the dc superherpes are definitely not going to become ghods, don't you, Radiation?

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
05:55 / 18.03.08
Well, sure, yes, totally. But is it so much to ask for at least a page of watered down super-divinity before it all goes back to boring merchandise and movie tie-ins?

The Natural Way
08:13 / 18.03.08
No indeed.

Yes indeed. It's part of the new, adult oriented approach.

From the July solitics for Final Crisis:

Art and covers by J.G. Jones
Batman missing in action! Superman immobilized! Green Lantern on trial for his life!
A shadow is falling across Earth’s super heroes — and now it’s Wonder Woman’s turn to face the Evil Gods!
What bizarre warning from beyond awaits Frankenstein, The Question and the agents of S.H.A.D.E. in the shadows of the Dark Side Club? What grim fate lies in store for The Human Flame? What happens when the Anti-Life Equation hits the internet? Can the Fastest Men Alive outrun The Black Racer — Death himself? And who are the Justifiers?

Good to see that ideas from Seven Soldiers are playing a big part while the utterly crap Countdown gets barely a look in.

Frankenstein! Yes, this is sounding like the closest thing we'll get to a Seven Soldiers sequel. I saw Zatanna on the DC Universe #0 promo, so hopefully she'll get some time in here as well. I saw Countdown was on issue 2, does that mean we're three weeks away from the first issue of FC?

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
05:05 / 14.04.08
SHADE! Frankenstein teaming up with the Question? This is exciting me more than event comics are meant to, what with that heavy dosage of Jaded Irony Hairgel I apply every other day.

"It's like 'All Star Superman' with Frank [Quitely], where you can go back and take out a lot of dialogue and exposition because the art does all of the work it's supposed to.

Which ties in very nicely with some of iamus' comments in the ASS thread.

In his first major tease, Morrison said, "Batman isn't coming back from it. Batman, as we know him, is not coming back from it."

Haven't seen that in a while, Trips. But yeah, it sort of invalidates the need for ASS-Bats, doesn't it?

My god I wish there was a real Batman comic with Batman acting so crazy it freaks the criminals out...in the sort of way depicted in the "My Parents Are Dead" strip.

It was very David Lynch. All I could think was:

"Where's Annie! Where's Annie!"

a preview of DC UNIVERSE #0 [which'll cost US$ 0,50] in a video interview with Morrison and Johns for CNN Money, of all places.

DC Universe #0 is out today, apparently with a MAJOR SPOILER mentioned in an article on Newsarama, also covered in an article in today's NY Daily News. (Don't read the Newsarama article at all if you don't want to be SPOILED; the article is marked 'do not read unless you are ready for spoilers').

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
19:05 / 30.04.08
Er, having just read this -- what was the major spoiler, exactly?

This was big and dumb but I had some fun with it. I'm mostly looking forward to the LEGION OF THREE WORLDS stuff, though I really hope, even with Perez's mad skills, that it isn't just a continuous fight scene. It's worth noting that this week's Action Comics has a Countdown-derived lead-in to the LOTW mini, with a story called "Batman and the Legion of Super-Heroes." Among other things, it calls attention to the number of times different Legions have ended up in the 20th and 21st Centuries.

The Green Lantern stuff could be interesting, I'm not exactly looking forward to any Wonder Woman developments, Batman's part is pretty much leading into Morrison's story over there. The Libra stuff could inspire me, but for the moment it feels a little too consciously ripped off from the Hood and New Avengers.

You beat me to the punch with that one- no name villain gathers semi-name villains into a villain club with the promise that they can kill whichever heroes they like (because that worked out great for the Rogues before) but said no-name is actually a front for an evil space demon (I'm guessing Darkseid in Libby's case).

In other 'I can't believe DC isn't getting sued' news... SPARTANS!

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
20:08 / 30.04.08
The Spartans didn't impress me. I was expecting Circe and her gang were gathering earth from evil places to, you know, make an evil Wonder Woman. Instead: men are better than women, which was the kind of ideological conflict already dealt with when Hercules showed up during Heinberg's run on WW.

But Libra -- I'm guessing that we're looking at the next phase of the "Crime Bible" meme Darkseid threw together and had intergang deliver during 52. Actually, it's pretty much the same deal as before, looks like.

I think I get what the big spoiler reveal probably was, but it doesn't really excite me. We've been teased with this particular thing so many times and frankly the idea is a little dull by this point.

Just so I know we're all on the same page (the last page to be specific) and to avoid spoilers: am I right in thinking that you-know-who is or has merged with the you-know-what?

SPOILERS (I think)

I liked that sense of demented determination behind Libra's words, the creepy balance and the overall glimpse he's given here.

That last page... as people like to say... "dinner" (there were plenty of other cool pages, but c'mon).

What's the spoiler? And what's the significance of the Twisters strip-tease club? Is Flash known at DC for liking stage performances (or is it just to contrast as The Shadow contrast)?

That was pretty efficient in getting me excited. I hope that's about all one needs to know of the DC's specifics coming into it (even if I'm still somewhat lost on some bits that feel like it assumes I know -- fiery guy, vomiting guy, shadow-folk, Superman beating guy with his arm, people at beamy splash page -- supposing they're the Green Lantern's guys, playing CSI Cosmos and getting their rings stolen).

the caption boxes and that last page are the big spoiler. i agree it has been done before, just not that well and with such power.

the page with the guy falling to Earth through multiple planes was great, for example. never read anything by Johns that I can remember, but will start to hunt down.

i was really excited by this DC UNIVERSE #0 thing, despite some weird art here and there... has George Perez started making Paul Gulacy's "dead-eyes" or was that the inker's doing?

in any case, Jones is there to make everything look great.

H3ct0r L1m4
21:26 / 30.04.08
oh, yeah, i was too confused by the vomiting guy sequence as i don't know who's-who there, but it was efficient in its claustrophobia-inducing goal.

i'm trying to play catch-up with DC post-INFINITE CRISIS by reading all of 52 and its derivates before FINAL CRISIS is here. yeah, right. maybe i'll summon The Flash to help me out.

I'm not sure what you-know-what you may mean, but yeah -- that last page.

"Twisters" isn't significant beyond being the setting for the villains' ensemble, except maybe that it might be operated by the Top or some derivative thereof. Or it might reference one of the Flash's favourite tricks...

I would have never guessed that that's where they were. Thought it was some evil villain's evil lair. More about lack of reading skills than knowledge of DCU, I guess.
