It wouldn't be too cliched for Batman to be the only one who doesn't ascend and, in fact, chooses to die as a man.

I'd quite like him to simply give up the Bat, pass it to a deserving son, and remain as wealthy Bruce Wayne the anti-Luthor.

Oh no, it would be too cliched.

the idea of the JLA or DC Big Guns becoming New Gods also fits in with Morrison's JLA One Million concept, to some degree (the 1,000,000 JLA being godlike in status/stature/home bases - Batman was Pluto and had his home base on Pluto, etc.)....

It's more... World War III, the good one, the last arc of JLA where the lion-angel is all like "when the fourth world is put away and folded-up, the fifth shall rise from this planetary cradle" - or is that Metron in 'Rock of Ages', now I think of it? The lionhead seraph says something anyway to Zauriel. God, I think I have to read Grant's JLA again.

Pretty sure Metron says something to effect in RoA.

C'mon, Science Guy, this is Grant Morrison comic. Ain't no way the ending's gonna be that dull.

And we already know Batman dies. Unless 666 was some kind of alternate timeline guff.

Regrettable Juvenilia

Does that seem less likely than the 666 future actually coming to pass as canon? It's not as if Morrison is averse to showing dark futures that then are then averted by the actions of his heroes.

If DC couldn't keep bloody Hal Jordan dead, what's the likelihood of characters that matter and that people other than fanboys know of staying in the ground? DC will get some newspaper headlines, just like with the last time Superman died, or with Batwoman, then it'll be undone in no time.

The Natural Way
11:10 / 21.11.07
Yes, but considering Batman is actually scheduled to die, it seems quite likely that there could be something in it. I mean, there were a lot of unresolved questions that ish left hanging.

I dunno. I'm a bit put off by the idea of Batman becoming a superhuman. Part of the Bat-greatness is that he's just a man, with a man's courage.

He know's nothing but a man, but he can never fail.

breaks into song

No-one but the pure of heart can find the golden grail!

The Batman as a new god idea is certainly a departure from the usual Batverse elements (although some of the 50's tales seem to be rather delightfully unsane) but Morrison is the writer who can make it not only work, but sing. I loved what he did with the mythos in SSoV and by some accounts, this angle is said to springboard off of that take.

I'm hoping GM had a New Gods mini (or, better yet, a series) planned for post FC. There were rumors of this years back, so maybe they were accurate, albeit far in advance.

If this were some other writer we were talking about I'd be with you, but as it's Grunticus I think we probably shouldn't be thinking about this in such straightforward terms. It's not about becoming a superhuman, it's about ascending to godhood, and you can be sure Grant's take on the Gods will be significantly more interesting and leftfield than anything just about any other superstar writer would come up with.

Course, this could all be total balls.

Falcon, the lion-head seraph didn't really say anything specifically New-Godzy in World War III (the good one), but within the same storyline, Metron has a speech to Green Lantern Kyle:

"Regard this organism; this prodigy among the stars...this Earth. Its expressive diversity of creation, its self-evolving perfection. And soil fertile enough to grow gods if spared the wrath of the last survivor of a war that ended in fire 15 billion years from here. Preserve this world..."

"...As New Genesis is to the Fourth World, Earth shall be the Fifth that is to come."

-JLA 40:4-5

It's a sci-fi prophecy!

You know, while I totally agree that its scifi prophecy awesomeness, I have to admit, I kind of want it to happen... later. Like, hundreds of years later. In JLA, Metron kept saying "You are only forerunners." Which was awesome. But it felt to me that he was talking about the JLA's descents hundreds, if not thousands of years from now. Doing it now feels... I don't know. I'm kind of hollow to the notion.

But who knows? If that is indeed what happens here, maybe it'll be awesome. I'll wait and see.

Morrison does have a habit of definitively ending whatever story he's been working on. Look at Animal Man, Doom Patrol, New X-Men, those series went on, but there wasn't really a need for anymore. His final arcs were all perfect summations of what went before, and left me totally satisfied without the need for other stories.

He said that Final Crisis was his final DCU work for a while, and looking it as the culmination of Seven Soldiers and 52, it would make sense for him to do a definitive ending like turning all the characters into gods. Now, I'm sure it would be rebooted shortly after, but it would be cool for his JLA to go out as the new New Gods. I really hope he brings in what was teased in S7: Miracleman and Seven Soldiers #1, about the rebirth of heroes and such. That's what I really want to see followed up, and Final Crisis would be a prime time to do that. If the New Gods are dead in this world, then we need new heroes to take over.

More from LITG.

"Oh and Dead Batman/Todd Batman/God Bruce Wayne? So not happening. You can still expect a status-challenging new scenario, still expect Alex Ross covers and designs, still expect some intricately complex yet instantly entertaining Morrisonia, just, expect something else. Did Internet reaction affect this? Not one jot it seems. All decisions are taking place at a much higher level, and Warner Bros. have made their feelings known."

Is it possible Morrison's with the higher ups on the marketing and design of what Batman'll be about during film time?

Is it possible that an otherwise unsubstantiated rumour started by a gossip columnist two weeks ago, that he now says is not happening, was in fact never happening?

Yeah, it's possible (but I didn't knew he had started the rumour. The first place I've read about something like that -- more specifically, him becoming a New God -- was in Valerie D'Orazio's Occasional Superheroine blog).

Dan Dido drops some Final Crisis news

There's also an art sample featuring Metron of the New Gods. While Didio's rambling about how Death of the New Gods doesn't really mean death of the New Gods is a bit annoying, the thought of Grant following up on his work in Seven Soldiers: Mister Miracle and Metron's appearances in JLA has me very interested. Grant is the only person out there who can match Kirby for crazy philosophical ideas, and I'm curious to see what kind of story he does.

New interview with JG Jones on Final Crisis

The most notable quote for me:

Jones: Seven Soldiers was terrific. And a lot of that stuff in Seven Soldiers is set-up for this book, which I didn't really understand until I started reading the script to draw Final Crisis.

NRAMA: Is that because you're seeing some of the characters from Seven Soldiers show up, or are some of the actual story elements carrying over?

JGJ: Well, I think Grant had a master plan for some of these characters all along. And just because us lesser mortals weren't included on the master plan didn't mean he wasn't going to forge ahead with it.

I'm going back and re-reading that stuff and seeing where things that I'm drawing now fall right back and get set up back in Seven Soldiers and in 52 a little bit.

NRAMA: A lot of the Seven Soldiers stuff – or a lot of those characters – we really haven't seen since.

JGJ: No. You'll be seeing some of them a little more often. Mr. Miracle makes a reappearance because this involves the Kirby Fourth World so heavily, as well as the rest of the DCU.

Dunno if anyone's mentioned this yet, but in 52, during the point in time when Black Adam was attacking Oolong Island, Veronica Cale (Wonder Woman villain) says this to Will Magnus in a fit of dementia:

"The forces of evil are gathering. Don't you understand? The Final Crisis is coming...

...Servants of death and despair. Apostles of anti-life. Their goal is eternal slavery and the destruction of human free will.

Oh Will--doesn't that turn you on?"

...And later, after some sobering off-camera fun, she says this:

"When I was a little girl I wanted to change the world. To be remembered in the history books as a woman who changed the world.

But human history is at an end...and none of this will be remembered."

-52 46:6-7

Story-wise, I'm thinking that the Crime Bible has some truly solid hints on what's to come, given that Cale was exposed to it during her stay at Oolong. This doesn't hint at much more than we already know, but that's some damn good seeding right there.

hmm, cool. looking forward to this. in any case, hope it's some threat tending more to the original CRISIS than say, INVASION.

and looking forward even more for the creator-owned works GM is bound to do after FC.

Greg Morgenstern speaks, over at Newsarama. Brief but pleasing tidbits about Final Crisis:

"It’s the apocalypse. Basically, this is it. This is doomsday for the DC Universe."

"We discover that all the previous experiences of the New Gods have kind of been projections into the DC Universe, and we’ve never seen the real thing until now…so it’s bad. It’s the real deal this time. Real evil."

"The Green Lanterns are quite essential to the whole book. Superman and Batman, obviously, are going to be a big deal. Wonder Woman is a big deal. The Question. Frankenstein. Mary Marvel..."

The Milton-loving, broken-hearted, patchwork Catholic ass-kicker finally comes home. Thank God And Almighty Jesus Amen.

I hate to admit it, but the growing prospect of this thing being the culmination of decades of Morrison's DC superhero stories - something potentially huge and hilarious and exciting like DC 1,000,000 or Rock of Ages with the mythic and emotional payload of something like 7 Soldiers - it whips my inner schoolgirl, usually somewhere deep and distant and repressed, into a kind of frenzy of shiteating grins and barely repressed anticipatory hoots.

Could be something good. I'm optimistic. Let the good times and Zauriel cameos roll.

Frankenstein indeed. Is this happening after his return from the Sheeda base one million years in the future, dragging Klarion with him? I too love the idea of this being the culmination of Animal Man/JLA/Seven Soldiers/52, meshing every thing together in one glorious conclusion. The JG Jones art looks so totally smooth, and if it truly is character focused, that's all the better.

07:46 / 15.02.08
May, apparently, though there aren't any official solicits for it yet.

There'll be a #0 issue co-written with Goeff Johns once Countdown ends, then (according to Dan Didio) the plan is an issue a month through August (#1-4), a month off in September, and then it finishes off from October to December(#5-7).

Batman R.I.P. starts in April as well, and carries through as the summer Batman event, I guess.

And there I was getting ready to quote this...

We discover that all the previous experiences of the New Gods have kind of been projections into the DC Universe

...only to find that the man Dones got there first. You know, I've had a suspicion ever since 7S that when and if Morrison's take on the New Gods was ever expanded upon it would look something like that.

Between this, ASS, Captain America, Iron Fist, Ennis's Punisher, and Jason Aaron's runs on Ghost Rider and Wolverine (okay, we're only one issue in a piece, but so far me likely a lot), and I'm a happy superhero loving bunny.

Couldn't they say "JG Jones (Marvel Boy/ Wanted)"? As much as I disliked Wanted, I'm sure it baits more readers (and maybe gets a bit of a Halo effect from the film?) than "52 covers" ("wow, fifty two? That's, like, a lot").

I think I'll be passing on this one until the TPBs... I've recently been getting more and more bothered by all the fucking ads that take me away entirely out of the story.

Any word of when the Batman/A*S interview will be coming out?

(damn, something about the perspective on that ring looks pretty vreakin good)
