Well, technically I doubt we've got a legal leg to stand on, music copyright is, what, forty or fifty years? So if I did a YSI link for 'Tomorrow Never Knows' by the Beatles then Michael Jackson could turn up at my flat and demand some cash. (Again) The earliest Elvis records were coming out of copyright a year or two back (leading to that 'A Little Less Conversation' dance track). So yes, we did YSI because it automatically limits the downloads but we're probably still breaking the law. As Flyboy says, as long as we're not going to be sending entire albums around between us any passing record company lawyers will hopefully decide it's really not worth the effort of going after us.

I'm not sure how Flyboy can be seen as one of the cool kids when to my knowledge he doesn't own a single Yasunao Tone album.

Yasunao Tone For The Painfully Alone? I've heard of them!

I've just put up a YSI of The Techniques Travelling Man. I managed to leave out the STMTCG tag, not deliberately, just 'cos I'm hungover. Anyhow, it made me think - do we want some kind of differentation between tracks we just want to share and tracks we want to analyse? Any thoughts?

My view on this - and I'm aware it's not universally shared - is that there need not be any difference. A thread with a YSI link indicates you want to share a song, but the fact that you're doing so on a discussion forum means that thread is also a place to discuss/analyse it.

There are cool kids on the music forum? Where?! I thought I was the only one...

Yeah, I thought there'd be more interest in hiphop given the number of US people here. Can't help much personally though.

Well, Flyboy? How's the Music Forum going now? I think it's moving pretty good. There's quite a variety of thread on the first page and they're moving fairly well. Not Converstion-style traffic, or a Late Shift-style traffic, but there's some.

If you formerly felt like a small child in an empty playground, it seems to me that now there's some children playing on the swings, some on the slide, but it's not packed in the playground. There's no crazy line-up for the swings, the kind that makes the swings so annoying.

I've been pretty happy for it for a while now! Yeah, it seems to be keeping ticking over. I think the time of year may help, partially, but there's lots of people who've made an effort too.

Yeah, after complaining upthread that I wasn't good at writing about why I like songs, I was surprised to find that if I tried I could do pretty good! Who would have thought?

The only problem with the Music forum at the moment is the lack of moderators who are ever online anymore - I put in a request to add a summary to the Sandi Thom thread and it's still not been approved 12 hours later...

I've volunteered for moderating the Music forum: just waiting approval (or otherwise).

Radio & Music is looking much healthier now; I even plan to post a bit more there too.

toksik and I volunteered about a month ago, but that thread doesn't appear to do much other than sit around like an ice cream that won't melt.

Okay, I really am going to move to lock the 'What are you listening to?' thread this time. Every time it gets bumped, it sucks energy from the rest of the forum, and it seems to tempt people to post lists... And the good posts, such as Lepidopteran's here, could easily be the first post in, say, a Klaus Nomi thread, and that's what I'd prefer to see.

Which, I meant to say in-post, I fully intend to do when I'm not at work and can afford the bandwidth to YSI some tracks. Don't worry, I'm on it - Nomi definitely deserves his own thread.

Well, I'm soliciting opinions for good dance-type workout music, which might get something going. Or not.

I did a thread there, but it kinda sunk after 5 replies. 2 of which were mine.

dude, you should see my gathering threads.
the trick is to never learn from the feedback of absence and keep hammering away.

i just started another nottinghill thread, for example, even after the last two ended up being my 'getting ready for carnival' blog.

persevere, ms. W!

See, this is another moment when clarity really matters in thread titles and abstracts. Workout music is something I thinbk about a lot, but I didn't click into that thread for several days because I'm not into Basement Jaxx.

I would, toksik, but I don't want to end up writing my own music blog, or a kind of diary, when it's meant to be a discussion! I mean I could waffle on for ages about my own opinions, but you know. I already do that on the now no-no-notorious Jack Reacher thread, on "Books".

We still desperately need more Music moderators. Is there any chance that we could get some movement on this, please?

I'll do it. I've been wanting to slay some lists for ages.

If you want to be a mod in Music, could you say so here and then private message me. If any of the existing mods have concerns about any of the volunteers (too new to the board or whatever) then could you let me know too. Thanks!

Right, I think I am going to move to lock the Classified thread. I know how hard it is to follow the principle of "just ignore the wingnut once the point that he's a wingnut has been made", 'cos I struggle to do it myself, so I'm not going to lecture anybody about that, but I do think we could avoided a situation in which Our Lady suggested luke hughes was Classified himself and a bunch of people took this as gospel. But obviously responsibility for the thread's crapness lies firstly with luke hughes himself... If we get any non-wingnut Classified fans who want the thread unlocked, they can always request it or start a non-wingnut thread.

Mon Oncle Ignatius
07:59 / 14.06.07
I've agreed the lock for pretty much the same reasons as Flyboy's. The thread is going nowhere fast, and deserves to sink down the page.

i have to admit everyone else was just as resistent as me to comment on the topic. i know i started it but it funny how focused the thread's theme became about control. we must maintain control bla bla bla the virdict is in classified = this site.

Way to take ownership of your thread, Luke.

luke hugh - I think if you start by taking on board the suggestions people put to you about not just posting a link or a sentence like "check this out!", but actually telling us why, based on your experience we should check artist(s) X out, your role on the board will be a much more productive one.

Our Lady Has Left the Building
15:16 / 14.06.07
Apologies for the 'Luke is Classified' stuff which I admit was silly, but I think the point stands that everyone else made much more of an effort in that thread than Luke himself was willing to give.

...your role on the board will be a much more productive one.

Bah. Your talk of "productive roles" is the bourgeois sheeptalk of The Man. He has made you his drone workerbee. You will not understand until you are free. Like Luke. Like Classified.

Oh, sod it, let's just go back* to a R&M forum purely consisting of lists of bands and arists, with occasional name-only recommendations, shall we? Then it won't be in a coma at all. It will be the best music forum on the whole damned web, bar none, with no pesky bothering to discuss - or perish the thought, critique - anything at all allowed, ever.

*Well, no, it wasn't ever totally like that of course. Was it?
