Who is Clive Tyldesley? Some TV sports commentator?

And is "commentator" a real word?

Well Eng-er-land scrape through, bless...

As for the coverage, copy letter to the BBC (maybe a little harsh)

I am fed up with some watery tart / flowery bint wasting my football time with her "I wanna be on wish you were here" style reports on all these lovely German cities that I do not ever intend to visit. If I wanted to watch a travel show I would watch F'ing 'Sky TRVL extra'. Please please please can we have more football coverage on match of the day, we only get one world cup every 4 years for goodness sakes, if I wanted frivolous comment I would the read the Mail on Sunday travel section (shortly prior to taking my own life).

DM: yes and yes.

Clive Tyldesley has, as Kay says, both a particularly annoying style and a habit of jinxing the game - e.g. after England scored the second this evening, he said something fatuous like 'well, England are finally going to win against Sweden after 40 years' or whatever it is, while on the screen Sweden were merrily forcing a corner, which they then proceeded to score from as England were totally inept. Happens every time he predicts something.

So, Clive Tyldesley is the Galvão Bueno of England! Well, I guess every nation must have its own annoying commentator.

Sorry bit off topic but I have my non footballing friend with me who has bet on Kaka to be the top scorer for the World Cup, personally I fancy Crespo or one of his countrymen. What does anyone, (particularly DM with his local knowledge), think about this top scorer thing?

ps Am very relieved England will be avoiding Germany for now and for some reason I don't feel too worried about Owen...

Ah, well, like a fool I thought 14-1 for Thierry Henry as top scorer was a rrrreaally good bet, so I put a fiver on that. Gnn. etc. (On the other hand, at least he's off the mark now, and he's always quite capable of putting six past a demoralised team in a single game, so I'm still, er, hopeful of an amazing turnaround). So when I stroke my beard and say mmm, yes, Kaka and Crespo do sound like good bets, it's only the opinion of a fool and a proven bet-loser. But still. I'm another one who'd be interested in hearing if anyone else here has had any bets on this World Cup.

My other bet was Argentina as winners at 8-1 though, so all is not lost.

(And Joe (oh how I wish he was called Joel) Cole's goal tonight was particularly fab, I thought. He won't ever be top scorer, but who cares when he can do super-stylish things like that. Yay Joe!)

I think the word is "misogynistic" rather than "harsh".

Meanwhile, what do people think about Owen's injury - awful for him, but perhaps a blessing in disguise for the team? Or is that rampantly wishful thinking?

Well, it's been demonstrated that you actually have to have your entire leg off before Eriksson will sub you, so this at least removes the danger that a patently unfit Owen will continue to hobble through. On the other hand, it does rather highlight the almost total absence of fit strikers in danger of getting a game - to wit, Peter Crouch. Who sort of doesn't count.

It sends a shudder to think that a nation's footballing hopes may rest on 'Crouchy' (as he's known to his friends). But the team did have a better shape last night. That might be more to do with the midfield changes. And I'm glad to say I was wrong about Heargreaves - a good solid, quiet game. No bigger compliment for an anchorman.

Did anyone see Jim Rosenthal and Gareth Southgate's noses touch last night? Why they had those two in profile....

I imagine England will line up as follows against Ecuador:

-----------------Robinson----------------

Carragher*---Ferdinand*---Terry---A. Cole

----Beckham-----Hargreaves-----J. Cole---

----------Lampard-------Gerrard----------

------------------Rooney-----------------

*Possible injuries/returns notwithstanding; if Neville is fit and Ferdinand not, then Carragher will most likely take his place in the centre with Neville returning at RB.

I think this will make both Stevie G and Lamps much more effective, and frankly given Owen's performance in the tournament, memorably and very accurately - even though I don't quite know what it means - compared to defunct faucetry by Anna de L, it can't be anything but a blessing for England to lose him. Rooney may last 90 or he may be subbed again and throw every toy from the pram, but Crouch and Walcott mightn't comprise bad 'desperate measure' subs. This quite frequently seems to happen with England, that they accrue injuries that somehow seem to benefit them; I recall how effective Trevor Sinclair was in - '02, was it?

Yeah, there’s a fella in the Guardian this morning who makes the same very good case for Owen’s injury being a good thing, in that it means all the big name midfielders can play and there’ll still be room for a holding midfielder who’ll allow Gerrard and Lampard to, er, ‘maraud forward.’ It did seem to be persuasively written, but then again, I might just be easily swayed by any articles that make a case for Crouch *not* being in the starting line-up.

Crouch always seems like a perfectly nice chap, and all. But I’d just prefer having players who can score the super-duper, oh-wow-that’s-an-amazing-goal goals, and the more of them the better.

I think the word is "misogynistic" rather than "harsh".

Indeed. One might equally ask why the atmosphere/background/fluff* pieces are seemingly only ever presented by women. Women who one presums are journalists and broadcasters as well as 'flowery bints'

*depending on your POV of them.

Anyway, agree with the broad consensus regarding Owen. Duncan F, have you considered sending that formation to Sven. Just so's he has a clue?

It'll be interesting to see how they play once one of the focal points is removed and that midfield can actually play in the formation that suits them best as individuals and a team.

Lack of depth as ever, is a worry. Watching the Spanish and Argintenian teams, and looking at their subs benches is a bit scary.

S'funny Mr Falconer, I was talking to someone just as you posted, about playing a 4-5-1. The holding position was the only problem in that formation but Heagreaves is evidently capable of the job based on last night's showing.

It's certainly the only realistic way you can get Lampard and Gerrard to play to their strengths. Then the Crouchster will only need to come on to rest Rooney or when England have a good lead.

It's just all a bit late to start realising this.

The Falcon
12:46 / 21.06.06
Hah, GGM, as if I'd help England if I could. I'd sooner send a dummy formation with Walcott as solo striker and Jamie Carragher reprising his holding midfield role. I honestly do think this is the likely formation against Ecuador, which I imagine England will win (one Lampard shot has to hit the target and go in, I'd think) to then face the Portuguese/Dutch (latter more likely) and exit, possibly on pens - although the Dutch record on said is just as bad.

Holding out a whisker of hope for Angola, after doing Iran, to face the Argentines next round tonight, but the Portuguese changes make the match look made for a comfy draw with Mexico coming in behind.

One problem with the 5 man midfield, mind... did Sweden look outnumbered in that area last night?

No, they did not. Beckham disappeared altogether, like unto his Euro 2004 performances.

BTW, if any of you want to stream the live World cup games, This site is pretty good

It's a Chinese television broadcast. It's nowhere near as busy as the BBC streaming and the adverts at half time are sometimes worth watching (I mean Jamie Carragher & Stevie Gerrard advertising Carlsberg!?)

You have to download this little bit first

There are usually a number of streams of varying speed. Most of them are fine but its sometimes worthwhile checking a couple out to find the best.

So, Argentina just tied with Holland 2 x 2. After defeating Ivory Coast and trumpling Serbia+Montenegro*, the Argentinians could not beat their first "serious" adversary. This Cup may the hardest to call in a couple of decades. (Maybe Ghana will be the winner)

* what's the motivation to play for a country that doesn't even exist anymore?

as for mysogynistic commentators, one i watched yesterday made the comment after a heavy challenge that, as a fan i thought was a bit harsh and deservedly was punished, "well, it's a man's game; you've got to take it like a man.."

so, women don't play?

i am writing a letter - am glad of advice from above

and am getting a 'flu which is curtailing my viewing, dammit... saw snippets last night of the group c draw and the portugal win. argentina look brutal. messi, maxi, cambiaso, riquelme - crespo on the bench - faaark... made holland look ordinary at times, but you wonder then why the scoreline? but they just had to not lose, so what's the hurry?

but will, on death's bed, be up tomorrow morning to jump and scream in a stadium full of australians (well, a living room with demanding other and her housemates) to watch the mighty socceroos crush the half-australian-isn't-enough croatians 7-0. (all right, just one nil would be dandy...)

o, yes, o boy o boy o boy we can do it.

can't we?

It's a shame for Nedved, anyway, who's been one of the best players in the world the last 5 years. They just don't look viable without big Jan Koller.

However, I'm sweating on Ghana not blowing it, tried the BBC's streaming because my red button on the cable's become inactive, but only got a series of still images, got the text commentary on, but it'll probably be the telly that keeps me up to date best in the end. Sounds like the US are giving them a bit of a pounding, but they only need avoid defeat. Bad news is Essien's yellow, which'll keep him out of the likely Brazil matchup (kinda hoping for a too-late equaliser for the Czechs, so's Ghana face Australia/Croatia, in order of likelihood, but it looks like that'll not happen.)

my feeling is that it'd be better for australia if they didn't play david james in goal again. that was one of the most inept goalkeeping performances i've seen in recent years. the sort of thing we expect to see from african nations (not to denigrate their keeps, who are almost always excellent shot stoppers, but often lacking in some of the technical, coaching led parts of the keeping game).

Also, Graham Poll, 3 yellow cards to one player? That's my kind of referee. And commentator so is a word.

WHOOOOOOO!!!!!! YEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!

"i told you so" [johnny warren]

yes johnny, you did. how far can we go? guus knocked italy out with s/korea last wc, can he repeat the feat with the invincible aussies???

(one would rationally expect the italians to get past australia, but this is football)

and after all the crying for kalac, he goes and does that!

but any reference to the one where he dropped it on the line can stop now, 'cause as i explained patiently to my irate sister, he knew the whistle had blown and was putting the ball down ready to kick as much as catching, something he wouldn't have done if the play was continuous. the one that kicked up from just in fronbt of him should be bread and butter, but they're the ones i hate as a 'keeper, me. but i can't see him lining up against italy now...

but we did it!! came from behind twice!! we are never beaten, we just sometimes run out of time, us... last 16, socceroos, last 16 socceroos, yee and haa in a long wrenching cry from out of the wilderness...

happy today.

Gutted about Owen. Seems terribly sad.

Are the corporate suits going to over-play Rooney, so he's not match-fit for the semis? Possibly, possibly. Tomorrow, I'm going to go down to to the bookies to put a monkey on, anyway, to that effect. Not because I find that sort of thing funny, you understand, but because I have a hamster to feed.

didn't see any usa ghana footage yet - commiserations slim et al. was the score much of an indication of the game or was ya robbed?

and ggm, meant to say 'shucks, aw thanks' earlier - all just too exciting to remember everything all at once.

i did see the press call the australia croatia match the match of the tournament so far - i was so inside the scramble all match i never watched it for real quality of football. any other neutrals regard the affair thus?

my italian hairtcutter will be having a soiree at his swank salon with large flat screens and most excellent coffee for our encounter. i almost can't look...

I don't even care whether or not Ghana deserved the penalty kick. The USA played like shit for most of the tourney. If you don't have any offense whatsoever, you don't deserve to advance.

Apparently, Bruce Arena (our coach) didn't walk over and shake the Ghanian coach's hand after the game. This seems completely classless to me. Is this a common occurrence in World Cup play?

Penalty kick or no, they needed another goal and when the second half started they didn't look like they were trying.

I'm really loving the world cup, me. Not over reported over-rated and over here. Not at all, none of it.

Give me more pointless commentary, more feeble tie-ins. I want every aspect of existence painted in the colours of a flag and sold back to me as part of a game I should love unconditionally.

The World Cup: We Love It, we are told, so it must be true.

And we have no choice to avoid it.
