G'night cube!

Now Im hungry. Seeing as how I just finished a large spaghetti supper Im blaming all the brownie talk.

Those brownies better be extra brownie-tastic!

I never noticed how many inclines this campus has until they were all covered in ice today. I nearly fell several times. All in all not a bad day. Now to top it off with a night of paper writing and lateshifting.

Sorry, Kegs. So, do you have any more mages to show us? Or are they all top-secret?

Animated? That sounds even more delicious than brownies!

The brownies need more time.

So. We wait. Meanwhile, snow continues to pile up. My cat is staring at the window suspiciously.

Cool idea, "ani-mages"...

I think the brownies may have eaten alas. Or perhaps it was the other way around, and the brownies were better than the lateshift.

Oh, like... SO LATE! Until I can sleep? That sounds good.

HOW IS MEL? And more to the point, why doesn't he have Mario Kart yet?

Special late shift preview.

'lo Shrug!

I am fine. Apart from being a bit pissed off that my employers are trying to fuck me over with regards to paying me for christmas decorating their premesis. Tomorrow I have to discard my favoured happy-go-lucky, goofy, surface-idiot self and go all hard-nosed, buisnesslike and sharp-edged to claim what is rightfully mine. Grrrr. Bastards.

I was going to buy Mario Kart. I was. For some reason I got Another Code instead. Which is a nice little game and no mistake. But still. It's not....Mario......Kart.......

Sorry.

Now I feel obliged to produce a preview of my own.......but all I have is Jenny, and grant has first dibs on that.

Oh, and Shrug'll back me up on this one...

Why aren't you in the Artist Collective?

Suedey! SHOT FOR MEAT!
22:51 / 09.12.05
Be hard, Mel! Be ruthless! It has to be done.

And get thee to ye olde game shoppe!

You're still not done with Jenny? Ye gods, man, he said, then realising he is the slowest artist of teh ever. Is it long? Is it full comic publishing size? My excitement is tangible.

Here's a little something I'm still working on (ignoring for a bit).

Oh, and I'm not in the collective because I'm lazy. Duh!

Suedey! SHOT FOR MEAT!
22:52 / 09.12.05
Or, alternatively, because art-wise I already have waaaay too much to do. More than is possible in a life time, I fear.

iamus
22:59 / 09.12.05
Yeah, I saw your Jenny as I lurked about on LJ like some freakymad fucking stalker. I like lots!

Shamefully, I'm actually a really fast artist I'm just an incredibly slow procrastinator. The script is only eight pages long, but it'll be more, because I like to expand panels to godzilla size and go crazy on the details.

Another reason it's taking so long is that I have about a million different things that my time is being divided amongst. Game. Writing. T-shirts for my pal's daughters birthday. etc. However, I am currently concentrating on getting it done and dusted soon.

It'll be lovely.

It'll make you stream rainbow drops from your eyeballs.

You should definitely join Suedey.
(but obviously it's perfectly understandable if you don't have time)

Good luck with your boss Mel. Bring them round your flat to make them feel guilty, do you have a mate that could double as a polio afflicted Dickensian child?

iamus
23:04 / 09.12.05
For some reason I read that as "portfolio afflicted Dickensian child".

In a pinch, I could play both roles.

They told me they would pay me £10 an hour. Then they realised how much they'd spent on decorations and how much I'd already worked, and are now trying to backtrack to my normal work wage (which, by the way, is half that). They're being a bunch of cheeky, cheeky bastards. It's actually fairly insulting. I see myself hulking out in the near future.

I look forward to this rainbow/eye socket scenario. Although I hope it doesn't make me feel sick or woozy, like too many sweets.

I can be a fast artist, but I usually take a long long long time working things out (art is maths) and I have no such "doing other things" excuse! Damn it. Oh, except drinking. ("Ooooh, it's two days later already! Damn you alcohol!")

I got stalled on my Jenny (I was supposed to do it all in ne week, but I think that one page took longer) because I decided I didn't like it. Eh.

It'll get done.

There's a little crater on my toe.

iamus
23:15 / 09.12.05
And there's my new desktop image right there.

So then guys, how to you draw?

See I go in rough with a pencil first, sweeping organic strokes straight from the subconcious. I block out my main forms on the page with very little detail and then gradually refine it bit by bit, rubbing out and drawing in until it starts to congeal on the page into a composition.

As soon as I get a good feeling about one part of the image, as soon as it feels right, it gets inked. Even if the rest of the page isn't worked out yet, I anchor those points I know are right and then build the image out like a spiderweb. Those bits can be a really small incidental detail in the bottom left, or they could be the character's eyes, smack bang right in the middle.

My pencils never get finalised. They only ever get to a mathematic average of what the inked lines should be like. My inking is like drawing a "line of best fit" through the pencils.

Ouch.

Your toe has my sincere condolences.

You know how sometimes you say things and I go, we're the same, you and I?

STOP BEING ME!

I draw like that. The pencils are sort of a complex diagram that only I can understand for what the finished art that goes on top will be like. Basic shapes, instructions, arrows. Bit of detail on the fiddly bits. Try and keep the inking loose and spontaneous (sometimes).

I can't remember how to draw a picture in pencil! It's like... ok, sometimes I'll write a card or a postcard to someone. My instinct is to do the letters in pencil first...

Evening, kids!

Whoah... I've been a bit absent from Lateshift recently, and looking back over the last couple of pages, it reminds me why I need to rectify that- it's where everyone posts their ace artwork. (I'm scared of Creation because it constantly reminds me that people are better at actually finishing their writing projects than I am).

Anyway... that aside, hello! I've just come back from the pub. It was fun (though emotionally wrenching in strange ways... but fun overall).

Hello Stoat! Long time no shift!

reminds me that people are better at actually finishing their writing projects than I am

I wouldn't worry about it. I've been working on a script since about 2002, which is constantly only halfway finished, but that half gets better and better.

STOP BEING ME!

Don't fight it. It's the way it was meant to be. I'd suggest a bit of travel, meeting up for pints and stuff, but I fear a horrible anti-matter, crossing the streams type disaster. Maybe we should test it out with online Mario Kart or Animal Crossing first?

Seeing as you twisted my leg. It's been seen before, but not in colour.

No actually that's a dirty lie.

Suedey, at least, has seen it.

Hey Stoats! I am pleased the pub was pleasant. I went out the eve that was yesterday, and my pub was also pleasant. Unfortunately I was reminded that alcohol can now be bought at the spa for 24 hours. That type of thing isn't for me. It leads to danger and pouring vodka in to a fresh can of beer.

I'm glad our drawings at least look different, Mel! Because otherwise, I'd have to kill you. DEAD. I'll still trample your town in Animal Crossing, though.

TRAMPLE!
