Sorry about that. I probably shouldn't have phrased it that way, despite riding on an I wouldn't admit to it if I were gonna. I had originally phrased it as a simply 'I'm not going to try to' but went in the other direction.

Since it's by 'invitation only' these days I wouldn't have much a chance, anyway. Perhaps the mystery's sweeter, anyway.

No offense or undermining intended.

It isn't by invitation only, DD. Information on the criteria and conditions for joining Barbelith are the first thing in the FAQ - link here.

Ah. The 'register' clicky up top gives a Barbelith's membership is currently by invitation only, so I was going by that. Thanks for the info, regardless.

And in case anyone thinks I seriously put thought to a second-suit, I double-checked with the 'register' because I vaguely recalled it being 'invitation only' and wanted to be sure. Which didn't work very well, clearly.

Yes, that is a bit ambiguous, isn't it - the link should be altered to the FAQ rather than the 2005 thread, although not that much has changed in principle. If you stuck to the instructions Olulabelle gives you in the first post of the linked thread, you'd get in pretty safely.

I have a friend who applied at the same time I did in 2005 but never got in, if ze was to re-apply and use me as a reference would that help hir case?

I'm not exactly a useful poster, but I've bought Haloquin to the board previously, and ze's done well in the Temple.

Pacific State: your friend not getting in is far, far more likely to be an oversight than anything else. Maybe an email went astray during the confirmation process, or something. There's not really any criteria for acceptance beyond "are you more or less human and not one of our tiny numbers of permanently banned dipshits?"

yeah it took me two tries over the course of a year. Though things seem to be remarkably spiffy fast ultra swank in the 'Lith Applications department these days.

That's because I've instituted a hopefully at least quasi-benevolent dictatorship, I'm afraid. Pretty much anyone who is not obviously one of our old friends will get in within a few weeks, ideally. The previous system was a lot more careful and a lot more exacting, and far more likely to reject. It also had oversight, which the system currently doesn't, except insofar as Tom has to agree all the applicants. Basically, I'm trying the best I can with a broken system, and every attempt I have made to allow more people oversight has, often through no fault of the hard-working and lovely people involved, caused a slowdown in process.

I'd like to get the software fixed. Until then, trial and error has suggested that this is the best way to do it.

Hey, dudes. Just a heads-up that my mate Kirsty will be applying for Barbelith sometime in the next few days. Not sure if that counts for beans but I suppose a recommendation couldn't hurt.

BWAHAHAAHAHAAH.

Ahem. If she's using webmail, PM me her address to save time. If not, she'll get in easy.

I've instituted a hopefully at least quasi-benevolent dictatorship.

Oh, they all start quasi-benevolent. That's how Stalin started. Then the control of the media begins, and the secret police, and the closing of borders, and the state control of the marketplace, and mass arrests of opponents, and the screaming, always the screaming...

I've been sent a message via Last.fm from someone calling themself Asphyxiaphilia asking about facilitating his application request. I don't know him, and have no idea if he's an 'old friend', but is there anything I can say other than be patient...?

He or she is in the batch currently being checked. You can skip the checking stage if a member is prepared to vouch for your real identity, but it sounds like you can't guarantee that in this case...

No, no I can't. That's all pretty much as I thought then. Thanks though, I'll let them know they've not been forgotten...

Just a teeny bump: there's a chap here commenting on my LJ who asked in a previous post what was happening with his application - I said he should send another email, which he says he has. I don't know him, but he seems to have an LJ. Any chance of an update for the fellow?

Fridge - your chap has been passed and should have received his login details.

Grant - does this fellow mention who he is? If not, I don't see what we can do for him, beyond ask him not to blahj the wiki.

Mice - I'm afraid I'm not a member of the Barbelith Facestab community, so it is probably not the best place to discuss admissions. Otherwise, see Fridge.

I'd like to talk about some ideas for technical workarounds if admission became open... we needed some sanity checking with minimal restructuring of the board's code.

Haus says the old time way was:

Admission process 1 - user sets username and password. Email address is optional - anything can be put in the field, so a false address can be used, but then if password is lost or forgotten it cannot be retrieved automatically.

I know open usually means you go to a page and sign yourself up but is there a way to add just enough human interaction to filter out trolls/bots from signing up without a massive code rewrite?

Live things mentioned throwing open the registration at set times for approved/invited people. this would require Tom opening/closing the access on schedule which I suspect is too much of a pain in the ass. Yet if I remember how it works now an approved person gets an email with a link to sign up? does anyone have more information about this part of the existing process?

Yes, I noticed. Odd, innit?

Basically, there are two bottlenecks in the admissions system - me and Tom. I passed up a few loads of applicants recently. Tom's been having a very full time of it lately professionally, and I assume hasn't had time to sort it out.

There is a way to resolve this, I think - to move the ability to let people on to Barbelith down a level - but it needs Tom to take an action. Without that action, or the usual action - well, basically, no new members.

As Haus has just explained, no mods can help.

I know that will seem unhelpful, and implausible, and frustrating - but that's the way it is, and has been for a long time.

Honestly, I doubt it's that big an issue. As a showcase of social software engineering, Barbelith is now less contemporary and less impressive than the stuff he's doing with Yahoo (albeit also much less scary). There's really no reason why he should be giving the place houseroom, especially since he very rarely interacts with anything except the Policy, and that intermittently. I'd imagine fondness more than fear is the issue.

The ideal solution for the rest of the life of Barbelith would probably be devolving admissions, much as banning has been just about devolved but more efficiently (id est, according to my ideas about how it should be done, natch). As I say, I think there's a way we can do that, but it needs to be worked out. One useful thing in that would be a copy of a recent (last year or so) invitation email.

OK. No new admissions since September, by the looks of it. I've contacted Tom to talk about possible ways to speed the plow on admissions, but so far no response.

At this point, the only thing preventing us from getting people in ourselves is this database of users that Tom is keeping, people who are not on which notionally get killed. However, if he isn't updating passed applicants at this point, I imagine that he is also not monitoring or updating that list. This being the case, it may be time to start thinking about ways to try to insource applications.

I think I have a functional way to do this. It involves more legwork than the current method, and might need some helpers, but it could be made to work, as long as Tom is kept updated on who was being let in - in case that whitelist is still operational.

Ideally, I'd like to hear back from Tom on what I suggested, but he is clearly extremely occupied at present, so... well, I'm not sure what the "so" is there. I suppose how long we wait for guidance before working out a new method.

What is this functional way you speak of? Or are you waiting for Tom to reply before making it public?
