Oh, and what do people think of this;

India to quit Champions Trophy

BCCI throwing its weight about again, or legitimate response?

Would a CT w/o India still be worth pursuing?

and Who Am I?, agree, I think, that if all the pitches are in in a similar state to Lahore, we'll edge it via batting superiority.

And while I will take any win, I'd rather it was an actual battle between a great attack and a great batting line-up, than decided by pitches and barometers.

I don't really care about the Champion's Trophy. We've got the world cup - that's enough for me. There's already too much one day cricket being played as it is, in my opinion. Mind you, every ODI they take away increases the likelihood of it being replaced by Twenty20 rather than test cricket.

Sounds like there is a bit of restructuring of tours going on. Regular matches between Australia and India is a good idea. And if they finally can Zimbabwe then that will create a little bit of space in the cricketing calendar.

Agreed, they're talking about one match a season, which I think would be great.

I remember having conversations less than a year ago about how India/Australia is now the biggest contest in world cricket and should be marketed as the new ashes because England will never be able to seriously challange Australia.

Talk about tempting fate!

To echo, I'm with Loomis on this. I want to see more test matches not one days. So I won't be sad to see CT fold if it did. And these seven/eight one day matches in a series must exhaust everyone. I'm not very fond of 20/20 and still cant bring myself to watch a whole game of it. There seems to be no actual skill or strategy involved. Test Cricket needs to evolve to cope with things like weather and bad light in my opinion. Why they can't use floodlights to help them is beyond me. Some say the red ball is hard to sight under lights but I think they can solve that problem if they want to.

More matches between Australia and India should be great.

With the way India's looking England look like they'll barely be hanging on when they tour. Sehwag, Laxman, Dravid, Tendulkar...what do England have? Thor...oh wait. Hopefully Simon Jones, Kevin Pietersen will be fit.

And Sri Lanka outplayed South Africa yesterday. The more I see something like this the less I care about one day cricket. Not to take away from their victory but I just think the mad dash of scoring rates, slogging make the one day arena porno cricket for the masses. That's just what I think and I've only recently started watching cricket again and fallen in love with Test Cricket.

Debbie does Kallis

Actually, I think much of test cricket is becoming pornographic. 3 of the tons at Lahore were faster than a run-a-ball, and the scoring rates in the Ashes series was pretty impressive for the most part, and downright frantic on the 1st day at Edgbaston.

I would agree that test cricket is the cream, but the 1 day stuff has its place. Perhaps it can even be said that 1 day cricket has made test cricket the game that it is now - Ritchie reckons modern day test cricket is the best he has ever seen.

Dunno Sack with pitches like the one in Lahore I don't think it's Test Cricket either but I think Test Cricket has to evolve over time. Meaning everyone playing like Kallis, Dravid will be difficult viewing. But yeah as entertaining Afridi's antics may be it's not test cricket.

On paper India's batting lineup is even better than Australia's. I think they only really suffer in the pace bowling department. I don't rate Irfan Pathan or Agarkar very highly. Agarkar is a club bowler. And speaking of club bowlers...

I've been wondering for a long time why they haven't dropped Sami and this came along.

There is also, as per that pic, a cultural thing, certainly ni much of India (I don't know about Pakistan) whereby men, and young men in particular, are much more tactile than their Western counterparts, for eg holding hands in street is v.common and is not an indicator of sexuality or 'coupleness'.

Who would've thought that that culture despite its conservatism is beneficial to their social outcasts.

It's not a cricket story but one body builder type my brother used to know convinced this other skinny guy that if he ejaculated in his arse he'd be as muscular as him. As he was just "injecting" all his manhood and giving him the proteins he needed.

Absolutely loads of them, but most of them are of the had-to-be-there/know-the-people sort, and none of them involves arses, which means that they would probably qualify as threadrot at the moment.

I think India held a hair's advantage until the third session (during which I fell asleep as it was half past five) until Afridi and Pakistan spanked the bowlers.

I think I saw RP Singh mouth "Bhenchot" (as Orwell spelt it), which means sisterfucker, after beating a batsman with one of his better balls. But I was on the phone so I can't be a hundred percent sure.

Younis Khan is looking like a very solid and mature batsman at number 3 and Yousuf's lazy shot meant he basically threw his wicket away. Unbelievable catch by Yuvraj.

You might think it's been a great day for Pakistan but I'm just wondering what India are going to do tomorrow when they come onto bat. Pakistan were slapping their own backs until a four hundred wicket first partnership by India. Dropping Rana Naved might bite Pakistan in the arse. Stupid move. I was going to say India are a bastman short but if Ganguly's form is anything to go by they won't miss him. Tomorrow's forecast might mean a shortened day but the days 3,4,5 promise to be sunny.

What a dreadful wasted chance by Pakistan who failed to capitalise on what looked like India collapsing with the followon looking very distant. As I said before Pathan has impressed me more with his batting than his bowling. Dhoni, brainlessly at first, knocked Pakistani bowlers into submission who looked very mediocre very quickly.
India dont seem like the one who will lose in this one now if there is a a positive result out of this one.

What is it with these India/Pakistan games? Is the idea that both sides score several million runs each in the first innings and then that's that?

This one's going to be another high-scoring draw I would have thought, but worrying for Pakistan is that Inzi and Salim Malik will take no further part, one with injury and one with a father about to die.

Mahendra Dhoni sounds quite a player. As I said earlier, what with Kamran Akmal and Sangakkara there are some talented 'keeper/batsmen around. Gilchrist had better watch his spot as top dog in that department, he really does have competition.

Threadrot - I had my second net yesterday evening and it looks as though I have torn a muscle in my lower back. Bollocks.

/What is it with these India/Pakistan games? Is the idea that both sides score several million runs each in the first innings and then that's that?/

I think Pakistan should score four an over tomorrow for ten overs then accelerate. Then if they dont lose too many wickets promote Afridi up the order and tell him to do what he's best at doing. This is of course assuming Afridi doesnt get himself out very early on. They have nine wickets. Pummel the bowlers into submission and bat no more than thirty/thirty five overs or set a target of 300+ whichever comes first.

I do suspect considering Inzamam wanting safety nets he'll declare too late and then leave out a small chance

/This one's going to be another high-scoring draw I would have thought, but worrying for Pakistan is that Inzi and Salim Malik will take no further part, one with injury and one with a father about to die./

I'm sure you've just written the wrong name here but I thought I'd point it out if you'll allow me. Salim Malik was a middle order batsmen who was banned in the late 90s and the lad your'e thinking of is the young Shoaib Malik. Inzi might come onto bat if necessary but I doubt he'll be needed considering how well Younis took responsibility today and they still have nine wickets left.

/Mahendra Dhoni sounds quite a player. As I said earlier, what with Kamran Akmal and Sangakkara there are some talented 'keeper/batsmen around. Gilchrist had better watch his spot as top dog in that department, he really does have competition./

All three are very talented young men but I love how Akmal pulls. It's not as lovely and effortless as Gilchrist's pull shot but still his best looking shot.

Shit. Sorry to hear that mate. Leave the fast bowling records to Shoaib for now eh?

Thanks for the sympathy, fellas. WW, I wish I could say that I injured my back pushing the speedometer towards 90 mph. It was actually gentle spin that did it. Oh, and carrying 3 stone more than when I last played many years ago. Off to an osteopath this afternoon who I'll pay £50 to tell me what I know already - that I'm an overweight, unfit slob.

International Cricket Captain? Is that one of these newfangled computer games? Possibly one for the Old Coots thread, but I remember a game called Howzat
I used to do my own test matches where the West Indies would run through the top order only to have Bob Willis come in and spank the best 4 man pace attack of all time to all corners for a 30 ball ton.

WW, do you seriously think Pakistan are going to try to set India a total? It seems as though there is still nothing for the bowlers in this wicket and it took Pakistan almost 2 days to bowl India out in the 1st innings. I can't see them doing it in 2 sessions even if India are chancing their arm going after a gettable total. I think Pakistan will be content to leave it to Karachi to try and force a result. Oh, and quite right, Shoaib not Salim.

It seems unlikely there'll be a decisive result, though Pakistan have started very strongly. *frets*

These pitches are ridiculous.

Oh, and hopefully not to sound like I'm pointing fingers, but astrojax, any chance of responding to mine and boboss' comments about the Andrew Symonds thing?

I've been hesitating about raising this, but I'm not comfortable letting it go as for me doing so makes discussing cricket here a slightly queasy experience, which is not something I want to be the case, as I think it's pretty evident that I love this thread.

Boycott confirmed my fears in the post-stumps analysis that Pakistan will get to a safe total instead of setting a competitive total. If Pakistan give them 350 to win from 50 overs or less India probably won't bother trying to win. They ought to leave them a very gettable score on this pitch and both sides know 5 an over is a challenge and gettable. I'm only hoping for declaration coming in reasonable time so India dont block out the fifty or so overs. Knowing Pakistanis selfish love for batting they might wait even wait for a double hundreds or whatever if either batsman stays at the crease.

And lets try staying friends shall we? No need for harsh words as this is a thread close to our hearts.

And lets try staying friends shall we? No need for harsh words as this is a thread close to our hearts.

Just for reference, having read this thread, having a board where people don't use racist slurs is pretty close to my heart. As far as I can tell, Astrojax has neither explained why he feels that it is acceptable to call Andrew Sympnds a golliwog, beyond "because he looks like one!", nor undertaken not to do so again, preferring to come back as if nothing had happened and nobody had questioned him. This is optimistic, and also irresponsible. Speaking personally, I'd like to know whether this is going to be a problem, and I don't think it's GGM's responsibility not to ruin the picnic by pointing out the poo in the marmalade.

Love to. As above, it is very close to my heart. At present here is the only place I talk cricket.

But if it means tolerating language that I regard as hatespeech, and that anywhere else would merit a mention in the Policy, than it's less likely that I'll 'stay friends' or feel able to stay at all.

I simply want astro to respond to the comments made about the unsuitability of that nickname, and my points about why this forum, with its absence of such language, is a pretty distinctive and to me valuable arena to enthuse about the sports I love.

This explanation will be faintly embarassing but here it goes.

I wasn't even aware that the poster in question (didnt remember his name then now do) had returned as if nothing had happened. The "friends" was us all staying friends with GGM and he/she would continue posting here in a cheeky sort of way. I thought with a shoddy defence of racism, astro had been dealt with by a banning which is why we hadn't heard a peep in a while. I was surprised by GGM's post and was a little confused that he/she was still bothered by it obviously unaware it was the right thing to do seeing Astrojax had just strolled into our lovely picnic pretending as if nothing had happened.

It wasn't "oh don't go crazy mate let it go. Look at his eyes. He realises he did the wrong thing and is obviously tattered by it. Lads will be lads."

Ah, okay. I see, and thanks for the explanation, I completely misunderstood your post so I'm sorry for jumping on it in mine.

Doesn't change much of my points which are a)about astrojax responding to questions, which is a matter of courtesy, as much as anything, as well as explaining why he feels that using the term golliwog and being challenged on it doesn't merit a response and/or an apology

b)about the fact that none of the regular participants of this thread (Whimsy's useful post aside) else seems to be bothered by it. Is this the case?

As that horrifies me. I don't want the cricket thread to be magically outside general Barbelith culture on these things, and neither do I want to feel that I'm conversing in an environment where people aren't bothered about racist language.

So, general thoughts people?

No worries mate. I will respond to your post in a bit more detail later as I can only think in expletives after Pathan's sensational hat-trick and am just unsure how far Pakistan will make it now without Inzamam and the top three out with ducks. Off to watch and listen to some horrid commentary.
