oh, I figured it was intentional, was just pointing it out.

Yes, I think that the ref to the Unknown Soldier was intentional. Also, in the Golden Age, Superman had "super muscular control" that allowed him to mimic the appearance of other people as well as completely disguise himself. Of course, the Master of Disguise fits in with a more mysterious type of hero like the Shadow, Batman and, of course, the Unknown Soldier, so it was quickly dropped from Superman.

Personally, even though the introduction of the Unknown Superman brings a richness to the story, I hope it remains a mystery.

Criminy. Superman puts on Negative Man drag in a GM book? Remixing superpeople into future generations is cool for DC. Remember Green Lightning?

Anyway, why aren't more people thinking Lois won't remember a damn thing about being Superwoman next issue. The gases used tto generate her superpowers creates paranoia and illusions. See "angelic and voilently insane". Chances are she won't even be Superwoman, but imagine it, thereby making the Clark/Superman reveal just another mean trick... like she expected.

I don't know Chad... However that might be a Silver Agery thing to do, doesn't seem to go with the way Supes is acting in these issues. I'm really praying this could be treated like if it was DK's type of elseworlds or something. That Lois could know and remember about Clark all the way to the end, could be a part of the 12 issues plot. When I look at the cover for #3, it really sounds like "Move Over, Man of Steel... Here Comes Superwoman". I don't know, the whole thing just sounds to me as if it really is important to the plot, and not something that would be erased one issue later.

And also, I wouldn't like it so much. I just LOOOVE the way Supes is genuinly trying to be as "naked" as possible and confident-with-a-boysh-winning-smile about it. I would be really pissed off if it was all a prank on Lois, 'cause this was a hell of a birthday gift (not only the Superwoman thing, but the openess Supes is treating her. Though I'm really tending to think that these two couldn't be separated in this story)

Chad, are you saying Superman is playing/is about to play a mean trick on Lois? If so, I'd like the first to say "er, no".

And it would be way too "SuperPot's smoke inducing paranoia and making one Super". Morrison seems to be trying to go a bit away from that nowadays, and it doesn't seem like he could play a druggy reference in ASS. Unless it's some playful homage to old comics' weird ambiguities (so far we already had the stoned Supes from #1 and the Secret-Room-for-Super-Wanking in #2 and, well, I think in #3's cover I'd be reaching way too much)

Perhaps not a mean trick so much as the circumstances surrounding her "super-power-ing" are such that it's completely plausable that she wouldn't believe the experience after the fact. She'd come off her high, fall asleep and wake up feeling groggy. She'd doubt the last few days all the way to the Clark reveal. Even if Jimmy told her otherwise, she's no reason to believe it.

No, Chad, I think the narrative threads are about drawing Clark and Lois closer together now. I mean, yes there is a trope in super-stories whereby Lois forgets, but that's so the status quo can be maintained. Kal's dying, there's no need for secrets anymore.

I also got a kick out Kal Kent's initials being KK, one letter in the alphabet before the famous Superman cast 'LL' combination. I'm sure someone can find a Kabbalah or numerology-related deep meaning here.

I find myself very disturbed and fascinated by the Unknown Superman (whose mask of bandages looks very much like the old DC war comic hero "The Unknown Solider," which Garth Ennis did a Vertigo revival before just shortly before Ennis got further into doing war comics) and the crypic line about "the terrible result".

I was waiting for someone to mention the resemblence to the Unknown Soldier... A 7 Soldiers connection as well? To the Unknown Soldier of Victory?

Unknown soldier Rebis remix is great.

I'm seeing this superman arch as moving through the "ages" of Superman quite quickly.

A Golden Age feel to #1
All the references to golden apples, greek myths & a supercompressed telling of his origins.

A Silver Age feel to #2
Is Superman actually a Jerk? Imaginary Supermen and robot doubles.

I'm predicting an compressed version of the adventures of Lois Lane in issue #3. From there I'm curious if the revealing of the secret ID to Lois (or her accepting it now that she knows truth, and perhaps Justice if not the "American Way" throught Superman's eyes; X-ray vision and all) will bring the storyline into the modern continuity of marriage. Perhaps peppered with false starts and "long engagements" ala NORTHERN EXPOSURE.

Along these lines perhaps a false death will lead to Bizzaro Superman as a replacement. From what I recall of interviews this might be accompanied by a genre shift into super horror.

No, 'cos that's the Bulleteer. 7S connex is the infant universe, grown up, lying about.

Could it be the cover for the 4th Issue?

Is that Jimmy Olsen? Or has someone else stollen the EXO-GENE Serium?

Also... have a look at Lois vs. the THING.

Holy crap! Thanks for finding & posting that!

Looks like Bizarro. Or maybe Supes hopped on some weird color Kryptonite that makes him evil.

Morrison has said about Jimmy Olsen that his Jimmy will be super-cool, a hit with all the ladies, everything the average teenager wants to be.

bless you all for these images.

Well so Superman won't give Jimmy VD on the cover, he'll just throw a car at him then... Still reminds me of "superman is a dick" from long ago.

I thought Quitely's pencils were being 'digitally inked' -- I guess that page is a page that's been digitally inked? Looks like a physically inked page to me, with the blue on it and all...but I don't know much about that whole process. The line weight looks like dark black as opposed to pencil lines, tho'...and it looks manually inked, somehow, to me.

Is that Thing-like monster identifiable as a Superman-history monster? Looks like something new to me (new to Supes, that is).

All of this is really making me dream of Grant Morrison on relaunches of both Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane and Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen.

The scaly gent in the pencil above was mentioned in interviews awhile back - he's a superhero/villain from the center of the earth.

I figured Superman could use a 'Subhuman' counterpart, so I've created Krull, an evolved dinosaur dictator who rules a monstrous civilization at the center of the earth. He's only in the story for a few pages but the concept is strong and feels like one that could be used again.

oh and why Lois has a 'heart' key instead of an 'Alt' key on her keyboard?

That's probably more of a nod to Apple computers, since that key is referred to as the Apple key and has a little apple on it instead of "Alt" like PCs.

*looks at keyboard* Macs have alt keys. The key you are thinking of is technically the "cmd" key.

Finder, and who else may be concerned: I showed the page to an artist friend and this is his interpretation [Cameron may have another]:

"I think it's graphite pencil, not black pencil, over the blue pencil breakdowns, and then everything darkened with photoshop. the trick is the blue pencil itself; with photoshop you can easily take the blue out when you make it darker. notice that some 'ink' bits are not that black, like Supes' sleeves in panel 1 and the monster's scales + cloud ends in the last panel. it's manually darkened - at photoshop - without commands like curves or brightness/contrast. thanks for showing this, it's rather interesting to see how it's done".

...yes. right next to that command symbol is an Apple, hence it's nickname as "the apple key." which is my point. I think the heart is a reference to the similarly shaped Apple on that key on a Mac keyboard.

oh sorry, i just noticed my flub. The Alt key is the same as the Option key on a Mac. I've always been referring to the Command key, though. The one to either side of the space bar that has a Apple symbol on it. I think the key in the A*S panel is this key, not the Alt key.

Man, was no one else creeped out by Superman choosing to have dinner with Lois aboard the salvaged TITANIC?!?! Was that supposed to be romantic? Actually, I'm only assuming it was the Titanic but even if it wasn't, the menu WAS from that doomed ship. Cripes. You gotta wonder about a date that sets that up for your bithday dinner, right after coming out of the closet wearing something bright and colorful with the underwear on the outside. Talk about a seriously dysfunctional relationship. Well, with his compulsive lying and her obsession with uncovering the truth, I guess they're perfect for one another.

What was with the black and white panels? I mean, Lois refers to their reltionship in 'black and white' terms before but this literalist reading just seemed very strange, unless Lois' terrible secret is that she's unable to see any colours other than black and white...

I assume it was the gasses making the blackwhitevision a literal thing. Clearly you are schizophrenic.
