I don't really get what yr saying about Gerrard, GGM - he was playing in Garcia's wide-right/free-role pozish for 70 mins. at least which covers his first goal, and that amazing cross for Cisse. I mean, he could do it for Engerlund, with Beckham moving central as he fancied for about three months sometime last year, but it might be crap. Motty or Lawro did tout him as the first 1 in a 4-4-1-1 at some point, though, but I don't really think that covers the major contribution made (which is not to suggest it's a bad idea, given the apparent trouble he and Lamps have working the engine room together.) That last equalizer, and I really feel sorry for the Hammers because I thought they merited it on the day, was struck 40 yards out; it was an amazing goal, given he was barely walking at that point. Not for the first time he turned a big game on it's head, did it against Olympiakos last year in Champs Lg.

Great, great FA cup final. Best I've seen, regardless of outcome.

The major news for me today, after both teams I'd wanted to win finals didn't, is the fact Scotland must now offically be known as 'Kirin Cup holders Scotland' henceforth, after avoiding a >2 goal defeat to Japan (0-0) today and handing the Bulgars their very arses on Thursday (5-1, eat it Kristeva.)

Oh, Gretna. Yeah, Gretna used to play Ryman's league or something? Lost an FA Cup tie around '96 3-2 to Bolton. Fun fact.

what a cup final, eh! a right cracker, ya might say. still don't know if i think either team deserved it more on the night. but in the end probably a steelier resolve. or luck? penalty shootouts... let's go there another time. but that was a great match of football.

what was the call you had like? i had martin tyler and andy gray. i find the latter a bit of a git, stating the bleeding obvious, but he's ok and tyler is always smooth and precise and not so prissy and wanky like some callers, nor too 'blokey'.

kewell in cup finals? good question now, but god i hope he's gone be ok for the world cup. i imagine aussie guus is probably thinking of his as an impact player, not a starter, now. i can't see us doing much better than boro mid-week...

but harry? i think he's unlucky. he's come back for the 'big one' last year but perhaps he was kidding himself, now this seems to be a new injury that has not settled from a few weeks back. maybe he does need to walk into the room of mirrors and take a good hard look at himself soon and see if he's really right to be able to give full commitment to the team at the world cup. must be a hard call for a player to make!! hope he's fine...

c'mon thursday morning my time, c'mon barca!! can only hope it's a right cracker, too!

FA Cup: Amazing stuff. Incredible match. West Ham were fantastic, caused Liverpool more problems than Man U and Chelsea put together.

Thanks GGM, and Falcon, for your kind words. I watched the game with two Liverpool fans and even they couldn't bring themselves to celebrate such an amazingly close result. I'm pretty sure they weren't just being nice in order to stop me, the resident Hammers representative, throwing myself out of the window ...

In any case, probably the most exciting and also horrifying game I've ever seen. It was almost cruel watching Marlon Harewood and Djibril Cisse hobbling about the pitch like their legs were about to fall off. Still couldn't tear my eyes from the screen, though, heartless hypocritical scumbag that I am.

Oh well, there's always next season, it was a game of two halves, that's football innit, etc.

Astrojax: that's the sky sports commentary that I was watching then. Most others will have been on the BBC and John 'Bleeding Obvious' Motson. I saw most of the game again later that night recorded off the bbc and wow, watching the same event covered by both Sky and the Beeb reminds you jsut how *good* sky's sports coverage is, despite how much we moan about it.

but god i hope he's gone be ok for the world cup

Absolutely. Kewell's trademark - actively to disrupt his team's pattern during an opening period in which they are carved up, before going off injured and sparking a major reorganisation that leads to a series of dramatic equalisers and eventually a victory for his team from which he feels tragically excluded - is a vital part of any mmodern manager's arsenal. Rather like a boron rod, he has to be withdrawn to start the reaction.

Can I just say that tomorrow night it will be:

Arsenal 2 Barcelona 1

Henry and Fabregas to score for Arsenal and Ronaldinho for Barcelona. Henry will then commit the rest of his career to Arsenal.

I hope!

given how poorly astro's tips are going, you'll prob'ly be right, 'cause i'm tipping barca 3, arsenal 1 - but either way, i hope for a cracker of a game to match the fa cup final, eh!

seems owen is fit for england, and cahill and kewell will be ok for germany but not nec before. personally, i have my doubts harry can be anything more than a 'bring on late' change things player, if that...

right team won the competition, imho

and perhaps the game - does anyone else think the guili strike should have stood and lehmann sent off? surely the ref plays advantage, awards goal, then metes out due punishment for lehmann's last man challenge... 1-0 to barca, different game.

all credit to both sides, to the gunners for a brave performance, but it had an air of inevitability... must admit, just a few minutes before the first barca goal (the replays we had were broken up transmissions, so i never got to see if eto'o was on side, but a worthy strike!) i was sitting thinking how awful if a game of such attacking promise was going to end with a gunners win from just one goal from a defender - thank god it didn't, eh?

so, deco wins again... can portugal cause an upset in germany?

Astro, admit it, you just hate Arsenal right?

The Falcon
13:46 / 18.05.06
But why do you hate them, eh?

Basically, had the ref played advantage and given the goal, the foul would not have stood as 'prevention of a goalscoring opportunity', goal having been scored. I can't ever remember seeing a red after an advantage. So. That's what should have happened, Barca 1-0 up, Lehmann in the book, great game (as it was measuring up in those first 20 mins. to be) ensues.

Unfortunately, this did not happen, and as a result instead of a starlit dream express of a game, we had a somewhat limp spectacle. Bit of a shame. Henry was super pissed-off afterward, never seen him like that, normally so ambassadorial.

22:03 / 18.05.06
no, i don't hate arsenal... i can't admit i like them, but that's a different matter...

what i found disappointing is that two teams of such rich talent and skill and such performers were hampered in displaying their full capacity, the strategies were revamped, the flow of the play was changed. i love watching football played with the skill and showmanship of these players...

...that and even though crystal palace would wallop them nine nil anywhere anyday, i thought barcelona probably the best team in the competition and was happy to see the result.

anyday, barca, any-day...

Brunner
12:06 / 19.05.06
Any other year I'd have appreciated Barca winning too - but Arsenal were virtually emasculated by Lehmann's sending off and I'm surprised they hung on for so long. I really really really feel they would have won if Guily's goal had stood and Lehmann had remained.

Still, Thierry is staying and Arsenal WILL sign some good players to strengthen the squad. Next year will be better than this one.

Also, has anyone else noticed how many (well, a few) Chelsea players keep going on about leaving, only for Jose to be all "We won't sell them/let them leave" and the like?

Could be an interesting season coming up... there certainly seems to be a whole lot of unrest and discontent over there, and nu-Liverpool and Arsenal are coming along strong.

congratulations. I really mean that.

You'll understand, though, Ned, if I scowl at you.

I shall indeed, it still startles me that a comparatively tiny town like Watford is in the premiership and as a big Saracens fan (rugby) as well I'm delighted that they'll finally have the money to upgrade the stadium with more bars! And actually, that's something that's not often talked about when Aidy B's 'direct tactics' are analysed. Vicarage Road is also a rugby stadium and unlike a few years back both sides really haven't been spending as much money on the pitch which used to be immaculate all season, no matter how many scrums had been on the 5m line the week before. Wonder how long it is before we get another premiership manager blaming Cobus Visagie's studwork for a defeat.

wtaford, wigan, west ham (no west bromich) - what is this, an invasion brought to you by the letter 'w'? sesame st premiership... to buck that trend, ggm, i rekkun leeds are likely to gain automatic promotion next season, with palace (although andy johnson is off to wigan...)

now yes yes that's all good, but the serious stuff: socceroos 1 - greece, current european champions, 0.

i still think we've a way to go before we meet japan, and a game against the dutch should tell us a lot. the greeks had little to play for and it showed. they lacked lustre and real drive - the japanese will present no such oportunity.

well, so much for palace getting a return to the top flight any time soon... i hear sepp blatter wants to shear the major euro leagues to 18 teams by next year's starting season [07-08]: england, spain, italy & france all have 20 team leagues and i can't imagine them wanting to change lightly...

but if they do, five, not three, teams would have to be relegated, or perhaps just two, but no promotions? either way, s'gone be harder to get into the big time now. d'oh.

i'll have to limit nationalities and stay a loyal parma and hearts fan only...

o travesty, the world cup hath cometh and goneth once againeth...

but the silly season is upon us and the shop window at the wc doubtless provides fodder for transfers... how's your team doing?

and if it's juve/lazio/ac milan/fiorentina, rekkun you'll stay in serie a after the national team did all they could to get clemency??

and football is like war in other ways - seems there is nary a day without some significant action somewhere across the globe. first tranche of european champions league got underway just a day after zizou's burst vessel... what odds ac milan and juve not in the final??

just thought i'd have a bit of a gloat

is australia the next portugal?? augurs well for us, anyhoo...

no-one keen to comment on the debacle of italian domestic football?

anyone surprised/not a bit surprised at the punishments meted out?

what odds ac milan making up 15pts? what odds juve making up 30, even in serie b?? about the same, i'd rekkun.

looking good for my team, parma!! go marco, go vinnie - socceroos bouncing into italian football glory!! o, it's all good, football, huh? [and requires less skill than golf ]
