The fact that I'm agreeing with Fly's angrier outbursts over the last few days is- well, not so much annoying. But worrying, to say the least.

Has the Laboratory been shut down? I mean, the only people in it are the animal rights activists protesting at the door.

We're waiting until they're all asleep. Then we're going in to save us some animals. We're all masked up and ready to go. (note to self- listening to too much Conflict when you're drunk makes you overly militant. Keep an eye on it).

'Lame'.

Particularly jarring when people point out that offensive racist language, or offensive sexist language, is 'lame'.
There are dozens of synonyms that don't have anything to do with disability.

That's a really good point. I'm trying to stop using that one myself; it still pops out if I don't watch it though. I'm also increasingly unimpressed by terms like 'retard' and associated crap, so I'm quitting that too.

Can you suggest some? I (over)use 'lame' myself, and I can never find a good synonym for it. (Maybe I should try 'stupid'. Hmm.)

Hmm. I think what I mostly mean when I say 'lame' is 'intellectually lazy to a degree that insults both of us'.* Somewhere between 'offensive', 'rubbish', and 'pants'.

This is offensive pants rubbish!

Kind of works.

*Will now shut up about this, btw, as I'm sure the sight of me trying to compensate my non-disabled self for the loss of one particular word in the ongoing struggle not to shore up disablist attitudes is at best unedifying and at worst intellectually lazy to a degree that insults us all.

Thanks, Ex... I thought I was being really oversensitive about "lame". Partly because my friend who uses a wheelchair makes fun of me for not using the word. But yeah, 'drather not.

You know what that thread on race, language and cultural appropriation really needed? It needed to be diverted into a discussion of whether a porn site is "over" or still cool, and whether livejournals are lame!

Because the very heavy discussion was located in the Head Shop forum, and digressions are not allowed. A thousand apologies.

No, no, mattheisis, it is I who should be alogising to you. You're quite right, "livejournals are laaaaame" is the kind of stellar post that belongs in every discussion, whether the Conversation (which you're right, we don't want to encourage good discussion in at all, best make it as messy and shit as possible!) or, even dare I say, the Head Shop.

The Barbelith Wiki says:
"You'll often also find threads starting up in Conversation rather than, say, Head-Shop, because the poster involved wants to discuss something in a less academic, more informal manner."
"All the fora - with the exception of the Conversation - are supposed to be spaces for intelligent discussion around a subject."
"Inside The Conversation anything goes, but everywhere else people are expected to stay on topic."

And frankly, I did try to get back on topic after two posts. See here. I said that being offensive is adolescent and immature....

best make it as messy and shit as possible!
Interesting. Because your hilarious Von Mises threads are so important and organized. We've had so many of them, and they're so funny and sweet and darling. They're definitely the most important and unshitty things in the conversation forum.

AH THE SWEET TASTE OF HEAD-DESK IT TASTE SO GOOD TO FLYBOY HE SMACK HIS HEAD ON THE DESK AND IT FEELs GOOD.

You're hitting your head on the desk because I put a throwaway joke (not even that good of one) in a Conversation thread.
As you've said numerous time to me before,
Calm Yourself.

Oh, and you're a mod... why don't you just delete the offending posts instead of smacking yourself in the face? Seems a little ridiculous.

i think, should it materialise, that said military force would more accurately be described as a shower.

This is a hardy perrenial rather than merely the gripe of the day:

1) Person posts something stupid, reactionary, bigoted and offensive. I mean real dreary shit like you'd find in the Daily Mail or something, only worse.

2) Person is called on same.

3) Person defends appalling sub-Daily Mail baloney by claiming to be fulfilling a similar role to a king's fool, or a mythical trickster figure eg Coyote. In their minds they are somehow transformed from a tiny bigot spouting crap that would embarass Kilroy, to a wild romantic outlaw, a madcap teller of the tough truths that no-one wants to hear. Childlike yet larger-than-life, they puncture the safe and cosy world of the inert and placid blah blah Emperor's New Clothes blah blah Anansi blah blah oh dear GodshutupshutupshutUP.

One of these days, when the weather is inclement and I have no other engagements, I am going to make up a list of names and humbly ask whichever Power they've namechecked to bless them.

Indeed. The 'I'm teh firestarter' defence is age-old. Presumably it's another ego-defence mechanism vaguely akin to 'I'm teh darqque magus', 'I'm teh TRUTH-SAYER' and 'I'm teh talker of common sense like what teh man on teh street knows is self-evident'. All share the common factor of bolstering one against criticism by setting oneself up as more 'authentic' than one's sheeplecritics, more in touch with gnostic or commonsense wisdom which has eluded the ivory tower PC dullard elite who rule Barbelith. All protect one from ever having to acknowledge personal fault, flaw or failure, meaning one never has to actually learn anything.

Feeling slightly annoyed at members who pick a suit name with a reference to Nazis. It just seems like RRRREALLY bad timing considering the recent foofaraw.

Or maybe I'm just a grumpy old fucker.

Sometimes I wonder if these people "taking on the Coyote role" are aware of just how often Coyote was injured or killed doin' his Coyote thing.

Matt, are you trying to say that you can't tell the difference between an obviously jokey von Mises thread and one that's got some meaty discussion going, even though it's in the Conversation?

Well, you certainly don't see them taking any special risks to get TEH TRUTH out, unless you count being flamed on a messageboard as equivalent to a painful demise.

I am also pissed off that I don't know whether all this stuff about secret forums is true or not. I'm naive enough to believe it, but cynical enough to disbelieve it. At the same time. This is producing a bit of a head-fuck.
