Rich Johnston spoiled that the main outcome of House of M will leave 600 or so mutants left in the Marvel U. Not too exciting...hopefully there will be some other lasting results as well.

I'd heard that before it started. That was rumoured from the get-go.

Well, presumably, if there's a lot less mutants, there might be a lot less mutants at Xaviers, which could return it to the pre-Morrison state of just being the few x-teams based there. After all, aren't the various New Mutants/New X-Men Academy books being cancelled after House of M?

Shrug

Well, no, just reduced.

That is to say; the team roster is being reduced.

That's a shame. New X-Men: Academy X is a highly-underrated book. I really like it. It's a bit like Generation X done right (ie. No Larry "can't-write-for-shit" Hama).

Sadly, it looks like a lot of the characters from this book are going to be killed off. It just won't be the same if it's just going to be like New Mutants - a small team of super-powered kids. I liked the super-high school setting and the way the classes were divided into teams.

The Grant Morrison / Joss Whedon era of mutantkind (i.e. emerging as authentically the next dominant force on Earth) is absolutely the most interesting thing to happen to the X-Men in decades. (Since the new team. Seriously.) Marvel are smoking goddamn crack if they think they can get more interesting stories out of an "only 600" setup. It completely rips out all of the very valuable persecuted-minority subtext from the concept and makes it Just Another Superhero Idea. I don't need to see yet another tired rehash of the MLK / Malcolm X thing when I want that subtext, but Christ! At least there's SOMETHING there to work with!

Terrible goddamn idea. House Of M is a disaster. I've been flipping through the core book, and it really is very readable as event comics go -- yes, that Emma Frost scene at the end of the new issue was superb -- but it just shouldn't be happening. And I say this as somebody who *likes* franchise comics to change a lot -- I don't care how many "important" characters they kill off, just don't rip out the engine that drives the entire friggin' X-Men concept!

the day we've hyped up for decades is here! mutants are more in numbers than ever! the mutant population is approaching that of the humans! the mutant human war is here! well, actually it happened during the nixon administration! we skipped it! and now! we're going back to the beginning! b/c everyone is really interested in the global rights of a race that numbers 300-600 out of billions! yay!

oh. and! we're forgetting the work of a brilliant writer who laid the foundation for the day mutants and humans get their war on! instead of spending the next decade telling the story of mutants and humans fighting for control of the planet...we're going to skip back to the beginning! instead of re-energizing the x-universe to be the ongoing story about what the past 35 years have built up to...we're going to dye dazzler's hair pink!

now *that* was sarcasm.

At least the Dazzler isn't regurgitating stomach bile in an ecstasy daze ala Ultimate X-Men.

House of M is decent storytelling, good dialogue, great art. I could honestly do without the other House of M tie-ins. They've all been quite weak. But I like seeing Wolvie with all his memories, and I'm very interested about what's going on in Magneto's head. Was this all his idea, or has his daughter forced this upon him as well? One thing for sure, this Hawkeye death/resurrection plot better take more than two pages to resolve. He needs to be the one to kill the Witch.

They should just split the universe down the middle. Then we could have a Marvel quytyc:

Universe 616
Universe 1602
Universe Ultimate
Universe M

They've certainly put enough effort into this series to at least grant it a "Year of M" to see if it's gawt legs.

rabideyemovement

What does universe "616" mean? Yes, I know this is the classic Marvel Universe, but why is that particular number significant? Is it a New York reference? An in-joke? The original Gematric coding of the number of the Beast? The year the Persians captured Alexandria?

Okay, I was doing a side search and answered my question. Apparently it was first used by Alan Moore in Captain Britain as the number for the mainstream reality. Also Fantastic Four #1 was released in june of 1961... 61/6
huh.

rumors are that it's Quicksilver that inspired Wanda to reform reality...yawn. This series would have to end with something really interesting (and I don't mean a bunch of mutants getting killed) for it to redeem itself, which I think is doubtful.

rabideyemovement
15:13 / 09.09.05
I have a feeling that maybe it was not Quicksilver or Magneto's fantasy world that Wanda is helping create. Perhaps it's the greatest wish of the most powerful telepath on Earth that's working with Wanda's powers.
cough-cough-ProfX-cough

Now, that would make this boring series worth the read!

Quimper
15:19 / 09.09.05
Yeah, it seems to be going down that path. Ultimately this is the "Prof. X does it Magneto's way" story—which leads to the destruction of the mutant population—which leads to a great big "I told you so!".

Quicksilver being the mastermind would be akin to Maggie shooting Mr. Burns...just a big "ooookaaayyy."

at a recent WizardWorld panel, Quesada said the last page of House of M #8 will reveal a new status quo for Wolverine. He also said 'much-needed' things are going to happen for the character. What could they do with Logan that they haven't already done? Have him lose his powers and cry like a baby for a change?

Quimper
18:39 / 03.10.05
From the solicits, it's pretty clear that the new status quo is having Logan retain his recollection of his past. No more messed-with memories. Nu Wolvie has full remembrance of everything and goes chasing after his real past and real self.

Wolverine regaining his memory would be the most interesting thing to happen to the character since having his Adamantium removed. Suddenly you have 100+ years worth of stories to write.
After reading the next Incredible hulk preview, it looks like everybody will just snap out of it, standing exactly where they were during the last moments of HouseM, wondering how they got there. Hulk wakes up in bed in Australia.

SPOILER WARNING FOR THE BLACK PANTHER TIE-IN.

I, honestly, am not really loving HoM. I love the art, but the story is so slow. Issue #5 had next to nothing for content. I'm retreading old comments here but I had to say it. The one thing that the main series really did well was to not give away Magneto's ambitions, but as soon as I picked up the Black Panther tie-in, (just to try something new), I was so disappointed with how it showed him as the obvious villain. At the end, he just gets foiled, and Quicksilver just shows up to say "I told you so...".

The thing that House of M has done RIGHT by me, however, is the fact that everything connects better. It was demonstrated in the Black Panther tie-in. It shows Apocolypse ruling Egypt, Storm gets Africa, T'Challa and his Kingdom, Namor complains and gets pummeled by Apocolypse, Sabertooth gets beheaded, Quicksilver pines over Storm, Black Bolt shows up to save the day, and The Panther hides in a coffin, while Shanna The She-Devil bitch-slaps some other chick who likes The BP. So, aside from the Magneto stuff that I mentioned earlier, The Black Panther Tie-In, I would have to say, is the best example of House of M's potential. That single issue was more exciting than the first 6 issues of the HoM main mini.

House of M had so much potential, I am going to buy the last 2 issues almost completely out of obligation to know how the story ends.

That's not how an event should be handled.

The purposes of crossovers or big event is to take money from people who care more about completism and how big a crossover can get than they do about the quality of the actual story/art/etc, and who will therefore buy all the crossover/event issues even though they're not enjoying it.

So I'd say they're doing it pretty well, Oddman.

Dammit Petey, you're right.

I am a completist. It's like, I have only 2 issues to go and I still hope that it's gonna turn out cool...but it won't. But I hope it does. But I know it won't. But it could...and so on...

See how conflicted I am???!

I stopped buying the crossover issues pretty early in. They were pretty much by and large, crappy (with that issue of Black Panther, actually being the worst) or vaguely connected at best.

Still, I love the main series and can't wait to see how it turns out.

I'm not saying that the Black Panther comic was the best I've ever read, (honestly, I don't care much for Reginald Hudlin's writing at all), I was just saying that even though it was pop-corny, it was still much more exciting that the main series. The best issue I think was HoM #3 when Wolverine wakes up and jumps off of the SHIELD helicarrier and gets pursued by The Red Guard. That's the kind of stuff I want in a huge crossover. Big action with characters that you would never see in these situations normally. If every issue was as good as #3, there wouldn't even be a debate.

I want to check it out. Which issue number is it?

Actually, nevermind. I'll just look for the issue with the big House Of M flag on the side.

Forgive my airheadedness...I just got out of Bio.

I flicked through the Captain America tie-in and thought it good. Nice, low-key, average guys view of the world as it changes.

I just wish they would hurry up and finish (or spoil) the series so Marvel can put up more solicitations for the rest of the year on their site.

Maybe that's the point and all though, they don't want to give away the big ending, or admit that this cross-over will change bugger all.

The post-House-of-M stuff comes under the banner "Decimation", the last line of House of M will be "No more [something]". It's been widely rumoured that what this means is a massive reduction in the number of mutants.

The Generation M miniseries would seem to be about individual mutant characters, and the covers strongly suggest that they might not be mutants anymore (that's my reading anyway).

There's a new Sentinels series, and an upcoming X-Men cover shows them with a Sentinel behind them, as if it were part of the team. It's been hinted that the Sentinels will be retasked, and the X-Men will get help from an unexpected quarter. I suspect this means that mutants are now such an endangered minority that the job of Sentinels becomes to protect them.

What remains to be seen is how this happens - apparently it's all one person's fault.

Yes, because when mutants include the most powerful telepath evah, a guy who can control the planet's magnetic field and a woman that reshapes reality, obviously they need all the help they can get. Unless the Marvel Universe President thinks "Sentinels have managed to kill absolutely no-one when they were mutant killers, maybe if they're mutant-protectors they'll kill a whole bunch of them. By falling on them or something."

But unless the decrease in mutant numbers also involves taking some well-known mutants with it, this doesn't really count as world-shaking. "Hey, House of M gets rid of loads of people you've never ever seen or heard about!" All that'll happen is that Professor X will have a little cry, then make another speech about how they've got to struggle even harder to make things safe for mutants. Then probably the Brotherhood will turn up and they'll have a fight.
