There are preview images for Marvel's House of M here (scroll down to the bottom of the page for the pics) and here. I don't follow the Avengers, so there's a lot of characters I don't recognize. As for the X-Men...well, it looks like Dazzler is back. Also, unless my eyes deceive me, Beast reverts back to his human form. I'm not wild about a furless Beast; I rather like his lion form. *Sigh* House of M is going to be a quick and easy vehicle for retconning. Apparently, at Wizard World L.A., "Quesada said House of M will have a profound impact on the Marvel Universe and 'will put some genies back in some bottles.'"

What makes you say that? He's in the big splash page in leonine form...

Look at the 6th and 7th pages on the Comics Continuum site. On the 6th page, on the upper left corner, opposite Capt Britain, doesn't that look like human Hank? Also, on page 7, lower right corner, the man taking off his glasses, isn't that Hank too?

Could be. Could also be his old blue form, or a flashback. Too early to say.

Oops, forgot to add that the splash pages could be an excerpt from earlier in the story, when Beast is still in his leonine form. Alternatively, the splash pages could be promo art and/or the wrap around cover for the inevitable tpb. However, if that's not Beast, then that's cool (as I said, I prefer him blue and furry). But if it isn't Hank, then who is he?

I don't know...DC is having a Big Crsis and why shouldn't Marvel? It's been a long tiem since they did one, and I have heard that they are going to use this as their "Hypertime" to explain away a lot of stupid decisions made over the ten years or so.

Besides, the Scarlet Witch has been hopelessly worthless as a character since John Byrne decided to retroactively destroy her marriage, children and personality. Maybe she'll come out of this as a character worht reading about.

I've been watching the news come out about this one like someone watches a car crash, you know it's gruesome and unethical but you still want to see the blood splattered bodies.

From what I can gather (and there's an interview with Bendis, the writer, up later today on Newsarama) Scarlett Witch, with the help of Magneto her father, alters reality to make Mutants the defining force in the Marvel Universe (like they weren't already).

Preview images show the Fantastic Four redesigned looking rather Mutant-centric (Everyone except Thing looks like a previous Mutant/X-men character ala Age of Apocalypse).

Spiderman, who is now an uber-celebrity ex-wrestler (!?!?!) has a "deep dark terrible secret" which is either he is a mutant or he isn't depending on the bias of his House of M miniseries.

Iron Man gets a Transformers style armour upgrade. No idea what the connection is there though.

Things I expect to be retconned/created by HoM:
Beast reverts to a previous form (as is Scarlett Witches memory of him), probably his old Avengers blue ape look.
Mag's becomes some kind of World Leader, probably a peaceful one.
Mag's whole New X-Men story (Xorn/Despot Magneto) to be explained away by Scarlett Witches reality altering powers.
Plenty of "Big Death's", it is after all a company wide event.
The Mutant population has been rumoured to be vastly cut back, the ranks of the X-men (especially their Limbo-bound members) will be thinned considerably.
Anything that happens during HoM can and will be reverted fairly quickly but the powers that be will keep a few key changes to spice up the Marvel Universe and thereby prove that Big Events do change the status quo permanently.

To be honest this whet my appetite when I had no idea what the direction was but right now I think the whole thing sounds awful, an easy way out of some of the better storylines in recent years that have complicated the Marvel Universe.
Storyline and consequences created by the Editors but ghost written by Bendis.

It's the Age of Magneto: in other words, a few months of 'What If?' stories that take placed supposedly in continuity but won't even effect half the titles you or I read. Relax.

Thanks, Flybes. I was getting anxious there.

You're sure it won't affect continuity?

Really?

Yeah, this seems a lot like The Age of Apocalypse, where the Marvel U. gets magically transformed and then back again. Although it'll probably be at least a little better than the ultra-shitty AOA, since Bendis is doing it...Marvel hints that there may be a few "lasting" changes once reality goes back to "normal," but who knows...it may be like the "lasting" changes after the first Secret War (FF membership changes for a while, Spidey's temporarily new costume, etc.).

I don't have high hopes for this but will check it out (the regular book, not all the tie-ins).

Bendis has an interview on Newsarama about this -- he keeps saying "this isn't an alternate universe, this stuff is REALLY happening to the Marvel Universe"....yeah, but so did Heroes Reborn and AOA. That stuff "REALLY" happened to, as much as comics stuff can. I don't expect much from this series but maybe it'll be halfway decent.

but this seemed interesting:

>> Also, you get some fallout from Disassembled even in issue #1, where some of the characters, and there will be some readers who probably agree with them, that the whole thing sucked, and they’re not happy with how things have picked back up again.

>> You also get some characters you haven’t seen in a long time, like Cloak and Dagger coming back front and center. I think people will be surprised who ends up in the cast for the bulk of the story.

Cloak and Dagger back in a big way?? My curiousity is piqued -- I know they're not all that amazing but I always liked them back in their heyday (if they can truly be said to have had a heyday)...

Ok, full Bendis damage control interview is up.

Quotes:
I will tell you the one thing I see that most people are fearful of – that this story is some kind of alternative universe…

It’s not. What’s happening to the Marvel Universe is actually happening to the Marvel Universe. This isn’t some kind of weirdness that spins out that isn’t real – it’s all real. It’s not a What If? it’s not a dream – it’s really happening.

Not a What If story then?

Newsarame:
Winding things down…as it’s been set up, that the world changes, it seems that it could be either Scarlet Witch’s doing on her own, or Magneto seeing this as his chance for victory…

BB: Exactly. Not only has something happened, we’re not sure how it happened, or who instigated it. But you’ll find out in the series. There’s a whodunit, and whatdunnit on top of the action in the series…you’ll find out in issue #7.

So it's a detective story then? Like Identity Crisis?

Still not convinced... but interested to see how much of this is just to alleviate the fears of the readers and how much is actually going to leave a lasting effect on the MU.

Yeah, we haven't seen Cloak and Dagger for a long time! Not since Runaways, last year.

I can't help but notice that whenever a hype piece talks about unused characters, it's always one that actually had a recent revival...by a less-popular writer.

This is just another in a long line of oblique puff pieces, that say "It isn't what you think, but we're not going to tell you what it is, because it IS what you think, but you'll have to order the first issue to find out."

I'm wondering if they're going to retcon the MU somehow and "tidy" things up, like Norman Osborn, Gwen, Aunt May groping Doc Ock's buttocks, add in Strange's rebooted origin, whatever.

Editorial hype can be a little circus-like and OTT (TROUBLE is the best! story! ever!), but if Bendis says that this series is really going to affect the MU, then I'll take him at his word (until I see the series).

I have to say I'm really not looking forward to this. I have deep misgivings about large scale cross-over series, I just always think of them as lazy money making schemes. I don't want to have to buy other comics to enjoy or understand the comics that I do buy.

This was pretty weak. I read it in the store, didn't like it enough to buy it. I can summarize it for you very easily:

Avengers and X-Men debate about what to do with Wanda; she's still flipping out and recreating reality every 10 minutes. Do they kill her, try to cure her, brainwash her, etc. Xaiver is out of ideas. They go to find her and she reboots reality. We don't quite see just how she's rebooted reality as the issue ends with a cliffhanger where Peter Parker has a baby...and possibly a different wife than Mary Jane in this new reality.

Yawn.

Reading the first issue confirms what I thought...they are going to use this as a big "reset button" to fix all of the problems of the past 10 years or so. I would expect we're going to get a few Big changes out of this so that Marvel can say that the mini-series changed things...but for the most part, it means we get a summer full of "what if" stories.

Which, honestly, don't interest me much.

Done right, that kind of thing can be used to explore character...but more likely it'll be a continuity wallow (Wow, Nick Fury has to smoke the Infinity Formula instead of having it injected into his veins), and in the end, Spider-Man will get a new costume, and the X-Men will change, but no one will notice, since we can't make heads or tails out of Claremont's increasingly desperate storytelling attempts.

Hang on, if Wanda actually can alter reality (as she does at the start of the book) why not just let her alter it so that she does have kids? Just make that one little change and let her be happy? What's wrong with that? You can't aruge that "it isn't real" because it is. She changes REALity. "Real" is what she says it is....

Anyhow, here's the glowing quim of changitude scans:

Oh, it looks like Spider-Man's married to Gwen Stacy.

"'will put some genies back in some bottles.'"

I take this to mean putting things back to status quo?

So, predictions of the ramifications of House of M, anyone?

Here's mine:

1) The X-Men will no longer be public

2) Return of Jean Grey

3) Eradication of the whole Spider-clone nonsense

4) Um... something to be done about the number of Green Goblins runing around.

Anyone else?

Christ, continuity's back with a capital C, isn't it? Seems the X-Men are going to find out about magneto in the next two issues of AXM, because they're all pretty ok with it in this one.

(And to understand the next issue of Pulse, you have to read the Secret War shitsplosion and Wolverine! Books that haven't ended the relevant arcs yet! CRAZY)

I liked this. Most reality shifts, everyone ends up dead. This one, Pete Parker goes to feed his baby. That was a very nice change.

Evidently we will see Xorneto's existence retconned as Scarlet Witch's doing. And Psylocke's resurrection has something to do with the other reality-warper in MU, her brother Jaime. I predict that there will still be no Jean post-HOM.

First ish was your typical bullshit. But HOM looks like more of a utopian alter-reality than we've ever seen.

Best bit for me was the former Avengers being pissed off that they hadn't been asked to join the new.

I was surprised to see Yellow Jacket & The Wasp et al back and in costumn. That scene blew quite a few potentially interesting reunions for the sake of a big splash shot.
