Rose also laments her past decision not to pursue her own ideas and opportunities in favour of a boyfriend... - looks like she didn't want to make the same mistake twice

was pretty good - seemed to get the saturday teatime horror just right with the dummies etc. kinda linked to avengers, prisoner, all that stuff. yeah billie was good, eccles better than i thought he'd be - felt like invisibles book one to me - jiminez on art.

tardis interior boring.
bin attack and burping sequence was philip bond ish.
didn't like the kennedy link an don't know what to think of the crappy photoshop photos or to be honest the whole, 'he's always around when summat happens' thing - kinda bores me.

but it was good enough all in i thinkums.

Splendid!

Best thing about it was the speed at which it raced along. And the wheelie-bin-monster. Impressed by both Ecclestone and Piper. More! More!

Despite the greater popularity of the theremin, the theme tune's humalong weirdness has stood the test of time and I felt like a kid again, having to have my bath in time to see a curmudgeonly old Dr Who in black and white.

I agree that it was the time travel aspect, above that of her boring life, unnecessary boyfriend and annoying mother, that cause Rose to chose the Doctor over her current situation.

After all she can always come back to her life five minutes after she walked away having had as much fun as she likes.
No-one need miss her at all.

Oh and I also got the feeling that the Doctor didn't return immediately but that he went off for a while, having failed to tempt Rose. Then changed his mind and came back again with a better offer that could convince Rose. His disappearing act could well have been much longer than was shown on-screen.

I still don't. Well, I do, but not the way it was played or written here. It's not like her mum was a bad person, or making her life a misery, or trouble to live with. She was just a fairly normal, boring woman.

The truth is that if I was Rose there is no way I wouldn't run in to the Tardis- if my mum was that boring and my boyfriend didn't get me and future was... not even in a department store in London.

But if I was me... I'd probably go anyway.

The theme isn't as good as it used to be, less piercing, and the typeset stinks.

But otherwise, it was well decent.

I think we can safely say that any member of this erstwhile board would go in a heartbeat. Can't we? Becuase if we can't steps may have to be taken.

I saw the, uhm, unofficial version that got leaked and I must admit to loving it. I even watched it twice, one after the other. Eccleston's Doctor is fantastic. I was unaware of the Bryan Hitch tardis design, but I'll keep an eye out for it in later eps.

I've not really much further to say, though to Americans and Canadians who aren't sure where to watch this, the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) will be airing it weekly starting April 5th.

(Damn, same night as the Duran Duran concert. Must figure out VCR timer!)

more details... no definite word yet on if Eccleston and Piper will be involved yet...

... I want a flashback regeneration story showing the transition between McGann and Eccleston myself...

Regrettable Juvenilia

I want an episode where he bumps into Ace, now grown up (although possibly not living in 19th century Paris and riding a time-travelling motorbike (!) like in the books), and Rose gets to be unaccountably annoyed by the sparks between Dorothea and the new improved sexyleatherjacket Doctor.

Oh, I liked the episode a lot, except the new theme tune is a bit rub and while I understand why the Doc grins a lot, I thought maybe Rose grinned too much at this stage. But we shall see.

Just thought I'd check, but do any Who fans mind if I cast Christopher Eccleston in my forthcoming (and, perforce, unofficial) film of Bobby Fischer's life?

That's the life of Robert James "Eccleston" Fischer.

Sweet Lord, who will give me the money? (I mean rights [I mean money ...])

Sorry to labour the point, but are they or are they not the same person?

Christopher E's IMDB photo gave me the first clue:

Regrettable Juvenilia

Word is they're in talks with David Tennant (Casanova, Blackpool) about the role. Part of me worries whether the Doc isn't getting a bit *too* young and photogenic, but Tennant does come across a little bit like a cross between a young Troughton and a young (less irritating) McCoy... I can certainly see him bringing back a rather more foppish wardrobe.

Spatula Clarke
00:09 / 31.03.05
Well, that's a pisser. I'd imagine they're going to have to make sure his replacement signs a multi-series deal, or else they run the risk of having brought the series back only to have it look like it's entirely based around a cheap gimmick.

Our Lady Has Left the Building
04:39 / 31.03.05
Well that explains why he sounded a bit odd about it on the Radio 2 'return of Doctor Who' documentary the other night. It is thought Eccleston fears being typecast and wants to concentrate on other projects. He is also said to have found the filming of the current series' 13 episodes gruelling.
Which, remembering Cracker, was something I was afraid of back when they announced he had the job.

That's a shame... I was looking forward to seeing him define the role over time.

Oh well, at least we get to indulge in baseless speculation again. That's always fun.

Pan Paniscus

I'd like to baselessly speculate on behalf of Ken Campbell, if I may. I think he'd make a fantastic Doctor - weird, grumpy, but funny and loveable at the same time. Also, he wouldn't take any nonsense from Billie, and with something the size of the Tardis, he'd have no trouble carting his enourmous eyebrows around.

Whisky Priestess
14:18 / 31.03.05
I'm not that bothered - Eccleston doesn't really do the required levity - it's like nails down a blackboard. As some perspicacious TV reviewer wrote: "There is little more irritating than watching Christopher Eccleston attempting to be impish"

The next Doctor should be female. Cue Sarah-Waters-esque sexual tension between Doc and Assistant. Now who could do Who? (pics later)

Tilda Swinton. She'd be great.

Lucy Liu

Celia Imrie.

Me, obviously.

Ken Campbell, dear dogging Christ no. The man's a genius but completely unsuitable for Who.

Whisky Priestess
17:18 / 31.03.05
Hmmm .. I thought of Redgrave too - apparently she did a great Prospero at the Globe(???) a few years back. But perhaps too Troughtonesque to make the final cut?

Meantime they should consider a Russian/black/Asian/Indian/Eskimo/child/transgender (RuPaul, but with acting skills?) Doctor - they are really missing a trick by always filling the role with a white English male. The whole point of the Doctor is that ze can be anyone and anything. Time to think outside the Tardis.

Spatula Clarke
19:07 / 31.03.05
Yeah, that was the other thing I was thinking when I read about Eccleston's resignation. I'd imagine there'll be a "it's because he's half human" solution to the problem, should it arise.

sleazenation
19:26 / 31.03.05
I'm refusing to believe that the TV movie is canon... I'm guessing they'll either do a big story that ends in the doctor getting a new life cycle or forget all about it...

Spatula Clarke
21:59 / 31.03.05
They've got room for a bit of a retrofit. Towards the end of the last Sylvester McCoy series, just when it was really starting to find its stride and before they killed it off, the writers started dropping in stuff about how the Doctor was supposedly hiding some big secret - taunting Ace with tales about how "he's not what you think he is" and all that. I think it popped up in at least three of the story arcs.

I've always thought that they must have had something in mind for the big reveal, rather than it just being a lazy attempt to boost ratings. It was the same series that they turned Ace into a cat, and all the signs were that they had plans for her character springing off from that. Maybe they intended to do the "half human" thing when they got the new series. It was a bit of a shit reveal in the TV movie, but that's because of the way it was handled - why would the Doctor being half human be a shock to people who had only just met him and found out that he was an alien? Dicks.

Regrettable Juvenilia
06:32 / 01.04.05
The initial spate of New Adventures novels spinning off from the cancellation revealed the 7th Doctor's big secret: he was a deeply morally dubious nutter. And the big secret about Ace was that it was always her destiny to kill some cosmic big bad (the Timewyrm? I forget...), and he'd mostly been keeping her around and grooming her for that.

Breaking news is that Nick Burns (Nathan Barley) is a strong contender to take over from Ecclestone. It's on The Times website but in the registration only section, so here's a quote:

"I'm a big fan of Nick's work in that series, he's a really exciting newcomer", says Davies. "The idea with the Tenth Doctor is that after this very dynamic character that Chris plays, you'll have the complete opposite of that, someone who's a little bit lost at sea, and he and Rose will have their roles reversed a little."
