I'd guess the relevant Mods are on the case, but it might be an idea if we kept an eye on the King Mob ficsuit which has recently posted in (to my knowledge) Convo and Comics. It joined in 2001 and doesn't look like it's posted much in the intervening time, also the quality of the posts seems a little suspect.

Perhaps I'm being paranoid. But, like the man says, keep 'em peeled.

I'm a little uncomfortable with the above. In this case, KM seems to have behaved reasonably well in the past, and largely avoided flame wars, abusive language and the like.

In a larger context I don't think we should be too suspicious of extended absences in of themselves. In fact I'm moderately delighted that some who have drifted away may still look in every now and again. But I am a bit concerned that a member should be brought up in policy when they, AFAIK, haven't done anything to warrant it apart from dissappear for a few years.

ES: if any of the above sounds sharp-edged, sorry, it's not meant that way. I know the community as a whole has had a bad experiences some with itinerant posters in the past.

Hey no worries. I just didn't recognise the suit and was a bit worried someone had managed to resurrect (or had inherited) an old suit and sent it lumbering out. I was a bit worried was all.

As it it ve's recognised the Comics thread ve started needed a bit more fibre in it's diet so all is right with the world.

I doubt it's akira's fault, except insofar as he linked to a website that clearly objected to him stealing their bandwidth and swapped the picture he linked to for that.

Oh, certainly. The image seems to have, well, changed substantially since akira first posted it. Mind you, it does make the posts discussing the image a lot funnier...

Unfortunately, it turned out that they actually contributed significantly more of value to Barbelith than many long-standing members, so... well, you can see what happened. Bannable 2 has actually been put forward as a potential moderator.

I think there is a case for locking the DKR thread, which was an embarrassment long before today but is now just a toilet.

I'd also quite fancy a banning thread on Dead Megatron, but we didn't do it when he hadn't learned not to be offensive about race, gender and sexuality so a bit of stupidity is probably neither here nor there.

Shiny: Well Over Thirty
13:26 / 23.01.08
Would it be feasible to lock the thread now, and then see how people feel about unlocking it in say a fortnight, when hopefully the urge for people to make comments which don't sound nearly as funny, or acceptable on the board as perhaps they did in the posters heads about Heath Ledger has passed?

I was leaning towards no lock and hoping people stopped saying bad things either of their own accord of as a result of persuasion, but Mr Flunchy's post sort of convinced me that maybe that just isn't going to happen.

Evil Scientist
13:59 / 23.01.08
To be honest it might be good to lock it, and start a new thread when DKR actually starts showing. As far a spoiler pics go it's pretty much served its purpose hasn't it? Plus, it might be a bit more respectful if people who wanted to discuss Ledger's acting, life, etc, moved to a thread where some people aren't (IMO naturlich) pining for a film at an inappropriate moment.

Personally i'm deeply cynical as to the likelihood of no-one starting another anticipatory thread well beforehand, the first time new picture of the Batmobile comes out, if an appropriate open thread does not exist at that point.

Althought given the way the current thread has gone in the last twenty fours hours, I'd agree that that's still preferable to keeping the current one going. So I doubt we'll get all the way to the film starting to be shown without a new active Dark Knight thread, but I guess I agree it's worth a shot.

Well, DM is now cobbling together bits of interviews promoting the film to construct a theory that the malign psychic force of the Joker murdered Heath Ledger by forcing him to take an overdose of sleeping pills. I am pretty disgusted with this, but we're back to moderating for taste, arguably.

Jack Fear

It is probably unreasonable to expect that there will be no discussion of the film before it actually comes to theatres, but let's be honest; that's less the fault of anyone on the board than of the movie's own promotion machine. The trend towards viral marketing and leaks and teases has extended the hype cycle for genre films from weeks to literally years.

We're supposed to talk about the hype. That's what hype is for; to be talked about. I think we need to accept that, and try to work with it—to find ways to critique the advertising and promotion cycles as things in themselves. The promo campaigns and the movies deserve separate threads, because they are separate things, with separate aims and effects. If we accept advertising as a legitimate artistic pursuit—and we'd be stupid not to—then we need to apply ourselves to analyzing it and learning from it.

That said: by all means, lock the current thread. It's a fucking disgrace.

Any good on-site examples? Haven't time to search ATM. Very much like the idea!

Is the proposed lock because of contributions on the final page, or because it's thought to have descended (some time ago) to a point beyond reasonable salvation?

To lock a thread because there are inappropriate and tasteless comments on the last page, rather than policing those comments and trying to get the thread on-track, seems perhaps unnecessary and unprecedented, if the rest of the thread is relatively OK.

Perhaps it's thought that the track was lost some time ago.

It became a train wreck fairly early on. For a while, it was an amusing train wreck. Now? Not so.

OK, I just think that what happens with this film, culturally ~ how it acquires different connotations in the light of Ledger's death, whether there are changes in the promotion and marketing (and release?), how it's reviewed, how people on Barbelith (and fans elsewhere) view it differently when it comes out ~ is interesting enough to have a thread reserved for it.

It could be a different thread, of course. Though how would you guarantee that a new thread, replacing the locked one, didn't just attract silly comments about Ledger, unless you policed it hard (which you could do with the existing one)?

This is all just suggestions. I don't see any harm in a new start for further discussion of the film. I think that a site like this, with quite a significant interest in comics and cinema, should probably have some forum for talking about this movie.

I'm fairly sure that there is precedent for locks on this kind of basis, W - don't ask me for specific examples, tho, because all I'll be able to manage is a blank stare.

I'm always unhappy with blanket deletion of utter stupidity, as I'm of the opinion that those responsible should be seen for what they are, and deleting the evidence gives them a free pass. In DM's case, he's had about thirty free passes so far in his Barbelith career. If not more.

Anyway, I've put the action forwards. But then, I'm increasingly finding that Shaftoe and TTS's 'nuke the site from orbit' line is beginning to win me over.

I'd suggest reading the thread, MW, and seeing if it's likely to blossom into a semiotic analysis of the power of celebrity. It might be best to repot such a discussion away from a thread made up largely of AICN links.

Thanks, guys.

My New Year's Resolution: to try a little harder in the hype threads—i.e., more attention to the modes and strategies of film marketing, less of "That IRON MAN trailer gave me a funny feeling in my pants."

I definitely see no reason not to throw this into temporary lock-mode, but I feel the need to mention that the following statement isn't really true, Haus.

DM is now cobbling together bits of interviews promoting the film to construct a theory that the malign psychic force of the Joker murdered Heath Ledger by forcing him to take an overdose of sleeping pills
