Why risk him coming back? Surely we all lose in that scenario.

...and in those three months he has contributed little of worth and much that is irritating and staticky. More to the point, he has responded to people pointing out that his irritating, staticky posts are irritating and staticky by posting large pictures of Care Bears and calling them greyfaces. Just at present I see no light over his horizon.

I didn't realise, before he started posting, of the existence of a band called "Solar Anus", however.

Probably a point against, but still.

Could Music Mods change the Title and Abstract of the most recently bumped P J Harvey thread to something like the below, please, to make it not out of date - as I’d quite like to continue discussing the new album there?

P J Harvey: The Peel Sessions & White Chalk

Discussion of The Peel Sessions and the new album White Chalk.

I know there’s another one not that far down at the mo but I’d like to try to build on whatever points I’d managed to make in the other thread, plus mine has White Chalk links and things! Thank you!

Could someone change the Fathers 4 Justice thread in the Conversation's title? "Fathers 4 Justice Members Assemble" seems more in line with the topic summary...

or could someone remove the fathers for justice abstarct full stop as it has fuck all to do with the thread at all?

Yep. I started it, and a mod added that to be 'funny'. I'd certainly not like to be associated with that group, and in fact I think it's a badly judged abuse of mod power.

That raises the question on how one moderates the moderators. This is not the first time that eager mods behave very troll-ish based on subjective standards on what and who is valuable enought to speak up. Rash banning requests and associating relativelly benign threads to hostility-inducing subjects just out of a feeling said threads are not "up to (so-called) Barbelith standards", and there's no system, it seems, to curb or punish such behaviour. It is a pottentially very bad tendency.

No, I don't want to start some huge interminable fucking debate about mods. I just think this is an example of misuse of power.

"Rash banning requests and associating relativelly benign threads to hostility-inducing subjects just out of a feeling said threads are not "up to (so-called) Barbelith standards", with no system to curb or punish such behaviour, is a pottentially very bad tendency." is a better wording for my previous sentence. Sorry for the lack of good editing.

No, I don't want to start some huge interminable fucking debate about mods.

Which is wise,I guess. But maybe it is better to address such issues before they become actually non-negligible (such instances of misuse of power are still rare, but seem to present a tendency for growing).

Dead Megatron
18:39 / 17.10.07
Though, after thinking a while, I realise I myself have no idea as to how address such issue effectively.

Could people not post in that thread until the abstract issue (who, why, wherefore etc) is sorted? As it stands it's a very uneasy mix of comic book geekery, in-jokes and Bad Barbepolitical History. And the mod that did it hasn't stepped forward to claim the glory yet. Would she or he do so? Soon, please?

Am I being really dim or has something now happened to this thread? I can't see a thread with F4J in the title in Conversation.

I'd like to see the abstract changed too. I disagree that it's a blatant example of mod abuse, but I'll accept that the joke was ill-judged and has caused a significant degree of strife and will definately be more sensitive about this kind of thing in future. To the best of my knowledge Iron Man and the rest of the super friends have no association to the well-known group of douchetools known as FF4J, nor to their fan club. I'd have already apologised to to the OP for the offence caused by letting the mod action through, if he'd expressed his annoyance in a more restrained fasion rather than throwing quite a spectacular tantrum in the thread. ("Hijacking," MOD in all caps, good gravy.)

When we've all calmed down a bit it might well be worthwhile to try and thrash out some guidelines about the kinds of changes that are/are not acceptable. This one was obviously not okay and I'm keen to avoid a similar occurence in future.

Something a bit more offensive than a bad joke, perhaps.

Dead Megatron
19:25 / 17.10.07
Moderation requires a cool mind. Lithians who get worked up so intensely over so many issues and go about moderating recklessly should ask themselves if they would not better refrain from such heavy-burden role and limit themselves to simply being the intelligent, relevant, witty and well-informed poster we all know and love.

I'm not naming names because I think this is a private, intimate questioning one should make to oneself, and not made by a public fora...

Haus Of Pain
19:29 / 17.10.07
Exactly a bad joke to you, may be very offensive to other posters on the board. Do you not think that it is your duty as a moderator to save the tasteless sarcasm to your posts (not suggesting that 'you' post tasteless sarcasm by the way!) and not inflict it on moderating topic abstracts. I don't see how this does not constitute an abuse of power. You've used your mod powers to make an offensive joke and upset some people = abuse of power odes it not?

Oh, shut up. Bad enough you started a content-free thread of possible interest only to you and your three closest offline pals, and then only after smoking a spliff the size of a baby's arm; you don't get to bitch when someone treats said thread with the withering contempt it deserves. You're already in a hole and without a leg to stand on, mizaphorically speaking—stop digging before you shoot yourself in the other foot.

Haus Of Pain

now that's constructive.

If I'd intended people to be as offended as they appear to be, then yes, that would be an abuse of power. If an existing summary had been being changed to the FF4J one then strewth, definately. However there was no summary and where there is no summary it is part of the mods' job to add one; sometimes this gets a little bit annoying, as when a long-time board member who knows better starts a content free joke thread which then needs to be supplied with an abstract and moved to a more appropriate part of the board, and snark can creep in. As for the offensivness, it genuinely never crossed my mind that this would cause so much upset. I thought I was letting through a bit of minor leg-pulling. If I'd had any idea of the level of upset I'd have vetoed it and substituted something less inflammatory myself.

People, people!

Abuse of power, or shut up Cap'n America? Failed bad-tasting mis-firing joke or teh faces made uv gray waving their wands of WOALD DOMINATION?

Either way, I've only seen AB step on to the plate so far on the mod side, but she wasn't the requestor. Invisible CHaus, was it you? You did post here first of everyone when things hotted up what with the new abstract... Coincidence, or not?

Dead Megatron
19:43 / 17.10.07
JF, you're not helping either. What AB did was bad-modding (at the very least), and it cannot be justified by the fact it was aimed at someone she, you, or anyone for that matter, finds not to be enough content-filled for your taste, just like (giving, of course, due proportions and considering this is by no means a perfect analogy - as most analogies are, btw) a rape cannot be justified by the fact the victim was a) dressed too sexy, b) walking alone in a notoriously dangerous place, c) too drunk to say "no" outloud, or d) otherwise "asking for it".

So now having a bit of text you don't like put into your topic abstract is comparable to rape. Un-fucking-believable.

Still, does mean I get to do this again: Dead Megatron, SHUT THE FUCK UP.

Frankly, Megatron, the idea of either you or the Star-Spangled Stoner there giving anybody lectures about what's "helpful" or "constructive"—well, it's the funniest thing to come out of this whole debacle.

So now having a bit of text you don't like put into your topic abstract is comparable to rape. Un-fucking-believable.

What part of giving, of course, due proportions and considering this is by no means a perfect analogy - as most analogies are, btw did you not get? Plus, I wasn't referring to raping itself, but to the act of blaming the victim for the victmizer action, which is what you are effectively doing now

Frankly, Megatron, the idea of either you or the Star-Spangled Stoner there giving anybody lectures about what's "helpful" or "constructive"—well, it's the funniest thing to come out of this whole debacle.

Yeah, I also see the irony in that. But, instead of dismissing what I arguing based on my reputation, you should ask yourself how things came to a point that I, of all people, have become the "moderating" voice. And this is not my debacle.

Finally, is yelling "SHUT THE FUCK UP" an acceptable moderating tool? Because, if for nothing else, histoty shows it usually works to the opposite direction, does it not?

Despite the fact that I changed my name to CA and engaged in a thread that was not exactly substance heavy & in the past have been partial to the odd 'crap' joke on Barbelith doesn't mean I don't have the right to get involved in a debate about moderating. At the moment all your doing is basically shouting "I DON'T LIKE YOU, I DON'T LIKE YOU"!

Less searchable M0rd4nt

Yelling "shut the fuck up" is not a good moderating tool, no. But since I'm not a moderator in the Policy or in the Conversation, which are the only fora where I've told you to shut the fuck up, this is irrelevant. I'm just an ordinary schmoe round here.

I'd like to make something clear. I'm not happy and I'm asking politely for you to hear me.

While it was not the most thoughtful decision in the world to change the summary to something tying the thread to an unpleasant connection, the mods did not step up and embrace said change by actively posting eye stabby shit. Posters in thread began to.

The responsibility for posting unpleasant meant-in-jest-text is that of the people who hit 'post reply'.

The person(s) who changed the summary may have made a poor decision but the continued joking and frivolity around an extremely disturbing topic is unkind.

To my thinking the blame game currently underway is of less importance than the lack of respect to stop joking about painful shit without concern for others.

I have believed if someone politely asks and presents reasons for a topic to be reconsidered in a different light the board as a whole would honor that request.
I have tried to ask in as many polite ways as I can think of. It's not funny it's highly disturbing and it is not being done in a productive manner in which something is being examined thoughtfully.

I personally find any attempt to hold the mods to some high standard of behavior ridiculous when posters cannot hold themselves to a lesser one.
