The only director who could do it justice would be Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Delicatessen, City of Lost Children and, er, Alien 4). As suggested, the actor playing V should never be named.
*Mini-spoiler* As a large part of V's speech is pre-recorded, I see no problem in giving one person the physical acting duties and another the voice. That might play well with the movement of the plot where Evey must become her own agent, comparing and contrasting (as in the original) V to the Voice. *Mini-spoiler ends*

Jeunet? V feels like a grey, rainy day in early 80s suburban London. Not something Jeunet is capable of, IMO.

Other things that won't be in the movie: Alan Moore's firey introduction and the sheer raging anger of the work.

Greengrass, the Bourne Supremacy director is the man for the job.

In my ideal dream world it'd be made by Ken Loach.

Think about it.

How much would that just work?

Or Alan Bleasdale. As a BBC2 serial, ideally made in about 1985.

Alan Clarke and Dennis Potter working together circ 1988 or so.

Gary Oldman as V.

You know it makes sense.

No, no, no.

1986. With Bob Peck as V, and Joanne Whalley as Evey.

Zoe Wannamaker as Helen Heyer. Tim McInnerny as Dominic. Um, Hugh Fraser as the Leader. God, it'd be a perfect fit. I'd clean up at the BAFTAs if I had a time machine.

Bob Peck - fantastic! Can we shoe horn Joe Don Baker in somehow?

Stoatie, I almost went for Loach, but I'm not sure he could handle the action sequences. Otherwise, yes!

Actually, who's that guy... I forget his name... did Dead Man's Shoes. Looked and felt like Loach, but ultra-violent.

That'll be Shane Meadows. I haven't seen DMS but MacGyver assures me that it's v.good.

Wait a minute! How about Danny Cannon directing, Stallone as V, um...

Rob Schnider as evey?

No, got it. Germaine Greer as V and Caprice as Evey.

Bobossboy- yeah, Shane Meadows. Cheers. That's the bugger. And yes, DMS is a fucking wicked film. (Just make sure you have something really nice to do afterwards.) It's British, it's grim, it's sordid, it's passionate, angry...
...it's NOT glamorous.
He could do VfV perfectly, if someone gave him the money.

It's times like this (well, generally, really) that I wish I was a millionaire.

I can do that already. I'm just too stupid to do it in cool ways.

Ah, you can't get arrested for violating the laws of physics. But their brothers might fuck you up in the pub car park. Bike chains and blades. Proper hardcore.

I sort of halfway forget which thread I was reading there for a minute, so I was going to whole-heartedly agree that Shane Meadows would have shot an ideal Hellblazer movie...

Ah, well, that too. He’s also the only man who could do Book 1 of the Invisibles. His suitability knows no bounds.

Look at the poster guys. The eyes.

V can only be played by David Walliams.

Oooh, 'ard.

Sideplot onto film release timing: IMDB is claiming 2006 which seems a trifle more realistic so hopefully November 5 2006 release but obviously they could be looking summer comic blockbuster. Not that I think the story is necessarily suitable or anything but we shall see.

Benny the Ball
06:39 / 12.01.05
Yeah, but Triplets, David Walliams is the shit one.

Imagine Lucas' bald head sillouetted against the chemical flames of the concentration camp scene... With Walliams the empahsis would be on 'camp'.

Actually, isn't there a camp character in the first third of the novel, it's been a while since I read it as I lent my copy out, but someone at the television station? Walliams could play him.

Grey Area
10:03 / 12.01.05
Yes, there is a camp character...don't recall the name but it's the guy who does the technical stuff while Prospero (and I'm not even sure that name's right) records the Voice broadcasts.

Dascombe. And the voice of Fate is Lewis Prothero.

James Purefoy cast as V

It looks like they're still going ahead with this. I can't say I'm familiar with the guy, so my expectations remain very low that the movie will be good.

06:22 / 21.02.05
He's okay, one of those 'outside' chance Bond type actors (you know the type, listed as a 50-1 odds on to be the next Bond every now and then). Still probably best known for his role in Resident Evil - he plays the fellow civvie with something to hide. At least it's not Keanu, and at least there is the chance that he may not think himself so big that he has to show his face...

Rupert Graves has been cast as Dominic.

Huh. Dunno the guy.

Benny the Ball
07:21 / 03.03.05
He's okay. Another jobbing type actor who does the work and doesn't shout about it on screen. It looks as though they are hoping that the Wachowski's and Portman's names will be enough.

If I were making this film (if only...) I'd have the moment Evey has her revelation on the roof to have "Reign" by UNKLE playing in the background. The lyrics would work well and the music is soaring, quite perfect I think.

"I am the lightning, I am the heat
I am the rain, rain oh, rain oh, rain (reign) all day
I am the rain
I'm gonna reign this way again
I am the rain
I am the spy
Before the blade
I am the raindrop out I see I cause
The ripples that becoming crashing waves
I am the rain, rain oh, rain oh, rain (reign) all day
I am the rain
You thought a different day had come
A day you thought the earth was done
And if you could have said it all
I know you would have said it all
You thought a different day had come
A day you thought the earth was done
And if you could have said it all
I know you would have said it all
I am the rain
I'm gonna reign this way again (this reign way again)
I am the rain, rain oh, rain oh, rain (reign) all day
You thought a different day had come
A day you thought the earth was done
I am the rain
And if you could have said it all
I know you would have said it all
I am the rain"

I'd only have music if it was live and in shot (ie the cabaret, when Evy and V dance etc) keeping with the sparcity of the graphic novel.

Jack Fear
18:04 / 03.03.05
Yeah. Shoot it under Dogme rules.

Either that, or score it entirely to the original versions of "Yakety Sax" and "Gimme Dat Ding."

Here's
an article on the press conference to kick off shooting. It's got me a bit more optimistic than I was before, and am pretty impressed that they're having Natalie shave her head. And, we won't see V's face in the film, so I've got some hopes.

And here's a newsarama article about the book, pretty interesting read, and it makes some points I agree with. Also of note, is the predictable right wing backlash.

I'll agree that Rich's article is indeed thought provoking (it could have done with a bit of proofing, although with the state of my posts to Barbelith, I'm hardly one to talk...).

There are a variety of important, intelligent and interesting discussions that need to happen on the problematic notion and term 'terrorism', but quite frankly, I don't think newsarama is capable of having them.
